JILL JACKSON –
ARE WE THERE YET?
macTheatre has a growing reputation for bringing high calibre artists to
Maldon and next month’s music night with Jill Jackson is no exception.
This Paisley born, Cetic Connections Award winning singer songwriter
has just released her 5th solo album Are We There Yet? which Maldon
audiences can hear Live at the picturesque Sunny Sailor on Sat 9 June at
7.30pm.
Jill Jackson (All Photo credits to Kris Kesiak Photography )
This long awaited album by the accomplished Jill Jackson is a record that
bears the hallmarks of a 25yr musical journey that has taken her from
Scotland to Top of The Pops to playing in every State of America (50
States in 50 Days!). For a while , Jill temporarily relocated to Nashville
where she became immersed in Music City’s culture of storytelling
songwriting. Personal struggles and a bucket list hike of the Grand
Canyon saw this artist return overflowing with lyrical and musical
inspiration. Are We There Yet? Is a journey through childhood, loss, life
struggles and ultimate happiness. These momentous life changes and
reflective nature flow through every word and note of the 10 new songs
– an uplifting, accomplished, mature record. Jill says, “These songs fell
out of my heart and guitar with a little bit of country, rock n roll and old
timey.” Produced by Boo Hewerdine (Eddi Reader, Emily Barker), Are We
There Yet? combines innovative, playful arrangements that would not
sound out of place in Lindy Hop, Harlem or the heart of the deep South
with an unabashed embrace of gleeful, melodic choruses delivered in
Jill’s unmistakeable warm and heart-wrenching voice. “Boo Hewerdine
was incredible to work with and we were on the same crazy wavelength
from day one.” explains Jackson, “He completely understood my vision
for this album and the sound I wanted to create.”
macTheatre organiser, Nicola Timson says, “ When I first saw Jill perform
Live, I was struck at the intimacy of her performance, how she drew
people in through her voice and lyrics and her sweet picking guitar
playing . She also plays a variety of stringed instruments including
mandolin, ukulele and banjo and really knows her way around the
fretboard. When I then saw Boo Hewerdine had produced her new
album, I jumped at the chance to bring her to Maldon and knew The
Sunny Sailor would be the perfect setting for the tenderness in the
songs. It will sound stunning there!”
Jill Jackson has previously worked and toured with Rod Stewart, Bryan
Adams, Albert Lee, Runrig and Mel C (Spice Girls) and also attracted the
attention of the television and film industry, with her songs “Just Not
Myself” and “Genie In A Bottle” cover featuring on several UK &
International TV shows. Tickets are limited so booking advisable and are
£10 from Maldon TIC 01621 856503 or on-line at
Well Done Olivia
One very proud and emotional lady got her target
at South Woodham Slimming World recently, tears
of joy for Olivia Wood who got her 8 stone award
and wow what a journey for Olivia. She was doing
really well and on the way to target when she got
pregnant, that didn't stop her from attending
group and she stuck with i , Slimming World is a
healthy eating plan so perfectly safe to continue
through her pregnancy, and 14 1/2 months ago she
gave birth to her beautiful daughter Fleur, she
gained a little weight but after having the baby
soon managed to get back into size 14/16 clothes
such an achievement as she was wearing 24/26
when she walked through those doors to start her
slimming world journey, to help with her weight
losses Olivia has been real active and you would
often see her running round south woodham and
has competed in many running events as well as
going to the gym, Geraldine Windsor who runs the
group said, I've never had a member with such
determination and willpower, she was an
inspiration to other members with her input in
group, her recipes and ideas . Olivia is a very busy
lady even more so now she has her daughter but
never did she give up, if she was working and
could not attend her weigh in that night she
would find another group to keep her on track,
and wow look at the pictures what a difference
going from the size 26 to size 10/12 we are all
super proud of her , and I know she's enjoying the
new fit and healthy and stunning Olivia ....
Visit of Meaux and Saarbrucken Rotary
Clubs to SWF Rotary May 2018
.The Rotary Club of South Woodham Ferrers entertained their twinned
clubs Meaux of France
and Saarbrucken of
Germany over the
weekend of 18 to 20th of
May 2018, a total of 42
visitors.
This is an annual
arrangement each year
where we visit one of the
clubs on a rotational
basis from which we
have generated many
friends.
Our friends arrived
on 18th May to the
Holiday Inn at
Basildon after a
long journey by
coach from
Saarbrucken of 12
hours, our friends
from Meaux
arriving under
their own steam by car. An arrival reception was held in the evening
where we all met up again to greet each other.
The evening finished reasonably early to allow all to rest before the
following days activities.
Saturday 19th May.
We all departed early for a visit to Chartwell the home of Sir Winston
Churchill now looked after by the National Trust..
The House, Grounds and Studio set in 80 Acres were all part of the visit.
This was followed by a light lunch before returning to the hotel to
prepare for the evening.
The Gala Dinner was held
at “Le Talbooth” Dedham.
Nr Colchester “John
Constable Country”
A marquee in the lovely
grounds catered for
around 90 guests where
an enjoyable evening was
had by all with “excellent
food, wine, music and
conversation.
Pictures of “Dedham Vale”
were presented to both Rotary
Clubs. The picture shows the
presentation to
Saarbruckens’ President
President Martin Schlechter
and Richard Coutte
represented the French
President Jean Francois Lefort
by SWF President Geof Clark
Sunday 20th
A farewell lunch was held in the grounds of one of our Rotarians.
Sandwiches, cakes, scones with cream and strawberry jam were enjoyed
by all in wonderful weather.
To everyones’ surprise, including the SWF Rotarians, we were
entertained by an excellent opera singer John Pierce who finished his act
with that well known
World Cup anthem
“Nessun Dorma”
Guests from Saarbrucken
and Meaux departed at
around 2p.m. for onward
journeys
We all look forward to
our next get together
which will be hosted by
our friends from Meaux
& & &
I read a story about someone getting stuck on a ledge of a cliff. Hundreds of feet below them were
jagged rocks with the sea crashing all around them. Above them, and a similar distance there was
a shear unclimbable rock wall up to the top. What should they do? Remembering something that
they had heard on several occasions at school, they decided to pray for help. Suddenly a huge eagle
appeared, hovered very close, and said “get onto my back, I’ll carry you to the top”. They refused.
Then an air/sea rescue helicopter flew in and over the loudspeaker said “We’re dropping a rope
with a rescuer attached, when he gets close enough, put on the harness he is carrying and let us pull
you safely into the chopper” But the stranded climber refused to let go of his precarious hold on
the ledge. By this time a crowd was gathering on the cliff top and they were praying that the climber
&
might be rescued. The crew of a light aircraft who were watching all this happening flew close in
and dropped a rope ladder long enough to be secured at the top and to reach the ledge. The climber would not
climb it. Instead they decided to pray again for God to rescue them. He replied “I sent you an eagle, I sent you a
helicopter, I sent you a rope ladder and you refused them all, why didn’t you make use of one of them? - And the
climber woke up in bed feeling both sweaty and confused.
That’s the thing about prayer, it has to be accompanied by trust, not only that God hears the prayer but that His
answer is the way forward. Often the answer He gives sends provides more than one solution, more than one way
forward. But he doesn’t send the answer which we have decided we want to hear. In other words we don’t trust his
answers. Quite often He answers through what seems like a ‘natural’ event – and why shouldn’t He as He created
everything and knows about everything that is going on. Sometimes His answer is a random, unexpected or
inexplicable event.
This is the point when we need to stop and think about prayer. It’s got two sides. The prayers we ask - the little
things and the immense even life changing things. But there is the times when each of us can be the answer to
prayer by allowing ourselves to be led by God to help by responding to a need;, to do, by using our energy or skills
for someone elses benefit;, or to give our time or our money to help someone.
FOCUS FOCUS ON ON HEALTH HEALTH
LEADERS IN EUROPE. We may not have the team that won the
Champions League but we are way ahead of our fellow Western Europeans
in one important respect. We are top of the ‘Obesity League’ … indisputable
champions! Whilst others may shy away from the risk to life and limb that
this entails, we Brits fearlessly step up to the plate.
17
Professional football games a reflect the wider problem – whilst there are
a few fine specimens of humanity on the pitch, in the stands there are
supporters of all shapes and sizes. The outsize fans seem to gather as close
to the TV cameras as they can wearing their shiny, clingy team shirts or, as
the excitement mounts, not wearing their shiny, clingy team shirts (neither
being ‘a good look’ for those who can stand to lose a pound or two.) Perhaps
their propensity for self-publicity skews one’s view of the ratio between
the slim and fit and the overweight – but all too often the young Adonises
appear heavily outnumbered by those with a propensity for pies and pints.
So where is this leading? In case you missed it, here is this week’s story. The
number of 10 and 11-year-old children classed as severely obese (the ‘most
overweight’ scale) in the final year of primary school is nearly double that
of those in’ reception’, new analysis by the Local Government Association
revealed this week. For children to be classified in this way they have to
have a BMI (age adjusted) at or above the 99th centile.
The LGA, which represents 370 councils in England and Wales, is warning
that severe child obesity rates, which have been published for the first time,
are contributing to a multi-billion pound ill-health time bomb. It analysed
Public Health England figures … and the figures show that more than
22,000 children aged 10 and 11 in Year 6 are classed as severely obese.
For most adults, a BMI of 40 or above means a person is severely obese –
at least 60 per cent higher than the upper healthy weight BMI limit of 24.9.
As I’ve mentioned before here, severe obesity puts people at serious health
risks, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer - obesity is the
second biggest cause of cancer. Severe obesity can shorten a person’s life
by 10 years – an equivalent loss to the effects of lifelong smoking.
The worry is that children are gaining weight at a drastic rate as they go
through schools.
Severe obesity rates vary significantly by area and are highest in children
living in the most-deprived towns and cities, and those from Black and
Minority Ethnic (BME) groups. The LGA saays that the figures should
serve as a “wake-up call” for concerted action to tackle the obesity crisis
which is costing the NHS more than £5 billion a year.
Despite budget reductions, councils are spending more on running effective
prevention schemes to help children stay healthy, which is key to tackling
the child obesity crisis and reducing future costs to hospital, health and
social care services.
Alongside the health warning, the LGA have a political message. It says
this preventative work, including the ability of councils to provide weight
management services for children and adults, is being hampered by a £600
million reduction in councils’ public health budgets by central government
between 2015/16 and 2019/20. The LGA is, therefore, calling for reductions
in public health grants to be reversed by the Government and for further
reforms to tackle childhood obesity. This includes councils having a say in
how and where the soft drinks levy is spent, better labelling on food and
drink products, and for councils to be given powers to ban junk food
advertising near schools.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Chairman of the LGA’s Community Wellbeing Board,
said:
“Unless we tackle this obesity crisis, today’s obese children will become
tomorrow’s obese adults whose years of healthy life will be shortened by a
whole host of health problems including diabetes, cancer and heart disease.”
Laura (aka Dr Cormack jnr) with Tom (born 27th May)
WANTON WASTE. As the Prime Minister is gearing up to announce more
funding for the health service as its 70th anniversary approaches, Prof Keith
Willett, medical director for acute care, has been sounding off in The
Telegraph. Laura Donnelly’s piece says he has accused the NHS of being
guilty of a “ridiculous waste of resources” - and that he claims we could
improve care without spending a penny more. His bugbear is bed-blocking
- and he says that too many surgeons were left unable to operate -
sometimes on a daily basis - because of a failure to tackle bed-blocking,
with beds filled by those unable to discharged for want of help at home.
Guy Birchal, writing in The Sun, quotes him as saying: “The best problem
solving happens when senior clinicians and managers come together
because we start to understand the reasons for blockages and where they
could, with some leadership, common sense thinking and a rearrangement
of resources, be solved.”
Whilst most of us think the NHS desperately needs a HUGE injection of
cash if it is to continue trying to claim that it can be all things to every man,
women and child ‘from cradle to grave’ whilst continuing as a ‘free at the
point of use’ service funded by the taxpayer, the Prof does have a point.
There is eye watering waste in NHS – and nobody ever seems to get the
blame. Look at what’s happened here in SWF. The Practice, hitherto known
as the New Surgery’ was a £multi-million folly. In the PCT era, those
making decisions thought it would be a jolly good idea to open a 4th surgery
in the town centre (the 4th having been put there on the basis of a ‘business
plan’ supported by 53 people in a town with a population of some 18,500!)
The premises alone were an example of profligacy on a grand scale … fully
equipped portakabins were erected for no good reason, their power supplied
by a generator which ran day and night - and GPs were flown into the
country and put up in hotels in order to help keep it ticking over. Then the
portakabins were made redundant and everyone was moved to the
McCarthy and Stone building where we were told the total outgoings were
(and are) £105,000 per annum. This, incidentally, is MUCH more that the
cost of the remaining premises in the town centre which cater for three times
as many patients. In order to pay for this foolhardiness the primary care
allocation for thousands of patients was cut to the bone and beyond. What
is more, at about the time all this took place, South Woodham’s £21,000
development grant was taken away – and we were expected to avoid
making the connection.
Now of course, that practice has been laid to rest in the graveyard reserved
for white elephants … and yet nobody was openly disciplined and nobody,
as far as we know, was fired as a result. Whilst these people continue to get
away with it, the NHS will go on wasting taxpayers’ money (which, lest
we forget, is also patients’ money as it is supposedly earmarked for their
care.) Hopefully, therefore, Prof Keith will continue his war on waste (but
that doesn’t mean we don’t also need a lot more cash.)
Dr John
HOME ALONE . Sue and I were surprised to hear of the birth of our
grandson,Tom, on Saturday. The labour lasted about 90 minutes from
beginning to end and, Gary having taken the boys out in order to let her
have some P&Q, Laura was left to get on with it. The midwife arrived at the
house with just a minute to spare and managed to talk her through it without
hesitation, deviation or repetition. We were as much taken by surprise as
everyone else involved - but delighted to have such a welcome addition to
our extended family!
Family Fun Day at Rettendon Church
The organisers were
very pleased with the
numbers of families
who turned up on a
glorious Bank Holiday
Monday. Most people
sat outside for the
attractions and went
inside just to cool off
for a tea or coffee.
Many of the children
enjoyed the face
painting, the bouncy
castle and the apple
bobbing, which is more
difficult than you think.
One star of the show
though for many was
Porridge, a lovely Saint
Bernard who can be
seen in the photograph
attached on her way
into the church
grounds. Most of her
day was spent sat
WHEELIE SUPPORTIVE CYCLISTS TAKE PART IN RIDE FOR HELEN 2018!
Almost 1,000 cyclists from around the county and beyond, gathered at the The Crix in Hatfield
Peverel yesterday (Sunday 13th May) to take part in Ride for Helen 2018, raising over £30,000
for the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity! The annual bike ride, now in its fifth year, has become
a firm favourite on the Essex Sporting calendar, with participant ages ranging from the youngest
at 4 years old and the oldest at 76.
The charity welcomed riders of all ages and abilities, with a choice of cycling routes to suit all
capabilities; 6 miles, 15 miles, 35 miles, 65 miles and NEW 100 miles. Those enjoying the beautiful
countryside routes included families with small children, seasoned road cyclists and even a family
of Penny Farthing riders!
Back at The Crix, supporters were kept entertained by local radio station Saint FM 94.7
represented by Lou Blackwell, as well as various refreshment trucks including Scoff & Sip, Cees
Cees Catering and Cafe2u. The team from Spokes were also on-hand to offer complimentary
bike repairs and advice.
BBC Essex Radio presenter Sadie Nine took part in the 6 mile route and alongside husband Al,
and doggies Janice and Tiger-Lilly, also helped our fantastic volunteers with the goody bag packing and medals. Every participant received a medal
and sparkling drink courtesy of Wilkin & Sons, as well as refreshments and bike seat covers from Eat Natural.
Four water stops were available along the longer routes, including one at the Hare & Hounds in Layer Bretton, the Western Arms in Silver End and
another at Earls Colne Recreation Club. Essex Audi sponsored the event for the fifth year running and provided support vehicles as well as goodie
bags.
Helen Rollason Cancer Charity Fundraising Manager Kate Alden said: “What a fantastic turnout with almost 1,000 supporters attending our annual
Ride for Helen raising over £30,000 for the charity! The rain held off, the winds were light and the sun shone in the afternoon – it was perfect cycling
conditions for our riders.
We feel very lucky that our patron Ian Twinley, has kindly allowed us to use the beautiful grounds of The
Crix in Hatfield Peverel as a starting and finishing point every year. I’d like to thank Essex Audi for the
use of their vehicles as recovery cars, Wilkin & Sons for providing the medals, drinks and snacks for
everyone taking part and Winfresh for donating bananas. Also thanks to The Lion at Boreham for
providing essential water, Spokes Cycle Care and Repair in Chelmsford for their services and repairs and
Eat Natural for donating their snack bars and bike seat covers.
We couldn’t organise such an amazing and positive event without the help of our dedicated team of
volunteers, staff, sponsors and supporters so thank you everyone for making the day so successful.”
SWFU Under 7 Rangers
Team coaches Dave and Nige feel it’s a great achievement to
go to an event like this and go unbeaten all day and without
conceding a single goal in normal time. Also, their calmness
during a nail biting shootout finale was incredible for 6/7 year
olds.
Massive thanks go to kit sponsor Fisk Fire Protection and
track suit sponsor Joe’s Carpets.
wrong with South Woodham Ferrers United so get in touch.
On arrival the boys checked in, looking the part in their Joe’s
Carpets sponsored tracksuits, and shortly afterwards were
announced onto the pitch individually as they came out of
the tunnel to the ‘roar’ of the crowd.
The 7 aside tournament was a different format to the 5 aside
they usually play. The teams were split into two groups with
Rangers securing third in the group stage with three 0-0
draws and a 1-0 win. They then went into a play-off against
the 3 rd place in the other group to decide 5 th /6 th place. The
game ended 0-0 so went to a penalty shootout which the
Rangers won 3-2.
