Look Isan Now
Before the first exhibition at TCDC Khonkaen happens
56th Studio
Visual Culture
TCDC Khonkaen is the second branch of TCDC and
the first is TCDC Chiang Mai. It is meant to be the design
and creative center of the northeast region which contains
3 main services. Those services are being the design and
creative center, being the northeast materials center and
training center to develop entrepreneurs’ skill in creative
thinking and raise their business. The opening exhibition
“Look Isan Now” will be shown and this is the story that
had happened about a year before the opening day told
by the curator and the exhibition designer.
The first exhibition of TCDC Khonkaen,
but it is the second exhibition about
Isan of TCDC
“Our first exhibition about Isan, “The Barren Land is
The Asset : Isan” happened 13 years ago when TCDC first
opened to serve the public. The curator had to consider
if we should pick that story to continue it in this year.”
When you have to tell story about Isan
to Isan native
“The challenge of this exhibition is to figure how to
interest northeast people with the story of their ordinary
daily lives. It is different from the last exhibition that we
told northeastern story to Bangkok people. So about
the middle of 2017 we went to do a survey and collect
information of present northeastern. We talked to many
people who gave us very warm welcome. Until at the end
of 2017, we had enough information to plan the exhibition’s
content and we decided to tell the different story this time.”
How is the young Koon today?
“The book “Look Isan” (The Northeastern Natives) by
Kumpoon Boontawee made us see and understand how
the northeastern region was in the past. But things we
saw when we talked to people nowadays are different.
There are so many interesting things about this region
but the 180 Sq.m. area might not be big enough to show
all of them. Finally we decided to tell story about skill,
identity, and the brave hearts of northeastern natives
combined with their modern lifestyle and new technology.
We would like to tell about story how the northeastern
people apply and handle the change that happens. We
would like to invite people to come see the mass of
changes in this exhibition.”
Come back home, there’s no place like
our home
“The big amount of creators in the region is a challenge
for the curator to edit the story. We have to consider
carefully about which objects should be picked and it
ended in our 18th version.”
“The final plan of the exhibition is divided into 3 zones.
The first zone shows the last story. Even most of people
in this region move to work out of their homeland, but their
journeys gave them a lot of knowledge and experiences,
including new skills.”
“The second zone is about northeastern people coming
back home. This zone takes over 60% of the exhibition area.
There are about 50 stories that we want to tell either about
people or the cities. When they come back, what Isan creators
do to create new business which is adapted to the present
social context. What did they do for their homeland?”
“The third zone tells the story about when the world
turns to Isan and it becomes worldwide popular. Isan
restaurant awarded the Michilin Star. Isan local band was
on stage in many international music festivals. There are
also a lot of policies and investments from both inside
and outside the country which give benefit to this region.
And we try to tell about these reputations to let the Isan
natives be proud of their homeland.”
The journal of the exhibition designing
by 56th Studio
“Coming back home to explore things or local intellectual
which once were neglected and using creativity to invent
innovation are the heart of the exhibition design. The
pattern of presentations does not only emphasize the
changing attitude of Isan people, but also reflects the
journey of their lives. The familiar Isan visual culture such
as oil painting on trucks and some applied vehicles are
used to represent new generation of Isan people who
can apply and create new innovations on the once was
barren land. Those creations are about entertainment,
music, food, crafts, fashion, and opportunities for better
society and economic in the future. The exhibition is
presented with some vernacular materials to make the
audience feel comfortable as they come back home to
explore new visions of the present Isan region.
The “LOOK ISAN NOW: ลูกอีสำานวันนี้”
Exhibition at TCDC Khonkaen, Gulpapruk Road,
Gangsadal neighborhood is coming soon.
