Cyberbullying ...
A Menace of All Time
Bullying is a behavioral problem
that has been studied in both humans
and animals. It is classified
into several categories, including
physical, emotional, verbal and
cyber. Although tools and methods
have changed throughout the
years, the impact of bullying is still
the same — leading to lifelong
trauma-related problems in the victim’s
life. These days, cellphones,
iPads, tablets and computers are
the weapons used on social media
platforms, where “online bullying
wars” occur. This is also known as
“cyberbullying.”
Every parent’s primary responsibility
is to take bullying seriously,
report it right away, and act immediately
to protect the victim and
the bully involved in the act. Parents
should watch and monitor every
activity of their minors on social
media, as well as their interactions
with strangers online. Unfortunately,
sometimes harmless banter turns
into unintentional bullying with
the same drastic outcomes. Data
shows that one-half of all children
get bullied in their lifetime, and 10
percent continue to get bullied on
a regular basis. Bullying has serious
effects on children, resulting
in short- and long-term cognitive,
emotional, academic and social
deficits.
Parents should always look for
certain signs in children, such as
being withdrawn, depressed or reluctant
to go to school; declining in
school performance; truancy; loss
of appetite; or weight loss. Some
children may present symptoms like
disturbed sleep, low self-esteem,
anxiety, panic attacks, self-harm behaviors
or substance-abuse issues.
Other kids might present psychosomatic
physical symptoms, including
headaches, tummy aches and
cold/cough related issues. Literature
shows that bullying also affects the
immune system, resulting in serious
physical illnesses. Bullying can also
occur offline, at school playgrounds,
in bathrooms, on buses and in unsupervised
halls. These days, children
do not have to leave their homes
and can still get bullied because social
media has taken over the lives
of many people in the iGeneration
and post-millennials.
In the past few years, there has
been a remarkable increase in suicide
rates due to cyberbullying.
Some of the most noted reasons
for youths who become bullies can
be because of their personal insecurity;
differences in their physical,
emotional, financial or cultural affiliation;
jealousy; peer pressure; fear
of rejection; or a desire for power.
Bullied victims are at a five-time
greater risk to have mental health
issues in their lives. If untreated,
victims of bullying can end up having
trauma-related symptoms like
nightmares, insomnia, fearfulness,
flashbacks and numbness. This results
in lifelong problems leading
to frequent hospitalizations and
an increased risk of self-harm and
suicide.
We all should be proactive in
identifying this problem and take
immediate action by informing
parents, teachers, counselors and
even the police if it involves either
weapons or danger to someone’s
life. Other interventions include
peer mediation, conflict resolution,
anger management and increased
adult supervision. The Department
of Health and Human Services
has many resources and tools listed
on stopbullying.gov. Last, but
not least, Florida has become the
first state to offer private-school
vouchers to bullied students. ª
There are few things more relaxing
than a trip to the spa. Breathing in the relaxing
aroma, lounging in a plush robe,
and being pampered for an hour — or
a couple of days — is not only a luxurious
experience, it is also good for your
health. With many options to choose
from, for both men and women, there is
a spa treatment that can benefit anyone.
Spas and Their
Health Benefits
by Anna Woodward
Spas have come a long way throughout
the ages. They now offer a wide
variety of services that all increase a
person’s health, appearance and mood.
Even though spas have always offered
water treatments, they have evolved over
the ages to offer more services to help
increase the beauty and mental state of
their patrons.
Today, many of these facilities are
designed to provide their guests with a
complete experience that can improve
the health and fitness of the mind, body
and spirit. There are many benefits
ON THE
of going to a place that specializes in
providing relaxing and therapeutic treatments.
Depending on where you go, you
can experience everything in one day or
over the course of several days.
Many relaxation retreats cater to their
patrons by providing services that will
make them look and feel more attractive.
Some of their most popular services are
massages, facials, wraps, manicures and
pedicures. Wraps can help to provide
patrons with a slimmer and more toned
appearance. They can even brighten your
skin, giving you a glowing complexion.
Massages are another important aspect
of these facilities. When given in
conjunction with water treatments, it
is much easier for guests to relax. The
scents that are provided through aromatherapy
also contribute to creating
a calming, soothing and stress-free environment.
A masseuse will be able to
rub and massage your body in different
Spas
ways to remove all of the tension from
your tired muscles and revitalize your
spirit. The main benefit of going to these
facilities is that you will feel rejuvenated
and refreshed.
Some spas have hydrotherapy services
that provide additional health benefits.
They can soothe and relax joints and
muscles that are stiff and overworked.
The patron sits in a hot tub that has special
salts and oils in it to provide moisturizing
and aromatherapy properties. By
soaking in a hot tub, arthritis sufferers
can get relief from their condition and increase
their mood. The heat helps to increase
blood flow by enabling the blood
vessels to dilate. By increasing the blood
circulation to the organs and affected areas
of the body, the body is more able to
heal. Pain is reduced as endorphins are
released from the brain.
Those who suffer from insomnia or
have trouble getting a good night’s sleep
can find relief in spas. By utilizing the
services in the facility, they can relax
their body and ease their mind to the
point where it is much easier for them to
fall asleep at night. This is a more natural
approach than having to rely on sleeping
medications and aids for relief.
Although spas provide a great variety
of services and products, some of these
facilities can be categorized by their
business focus. For example, there are
medical, beauty, day and health spas.
You can generally guess their areas of
specialty from their name. Relaxation facilities
are great places to go when you
need a vacation or escape from stress or
the world. You can spend a few hours
or few days in the facilities and leave
feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and with
a new outlook on life.
hours to escape from the real world?
Would you like to be pampered, instead
of you doing the pampering for
someone else? If so, you may want to
schedule an appointment at one of your
local day spas.
As nice as it is to hear that you should
schedule an appointment at one of your
local day spas, you may be curious as
to what they can do for you. Day spas
are designed to provide customers with
a good sense of health and relaxation.
One of the many ways that this is done
is through a large selection of body
treatments.
One of the most popular body treatments
offered at a day spa is that of a
massage. When it comes to massages,
you should know that it could be more
than just having your body rubbed
down for an hour or so. Many day spas
provide you with options, as well as
many accessories. For example, some
spas have what is commonly known as
breathe easy massages. These often
involve the use of scented lavender oil
towels. Hot stones can also be applied
to your face, back, stomach or all three
areas.
In addition to full body massages,
there are also those available that target
specific areas. The scalp is one of
those areas, as well as the hands, feet,
back and shoulders.
Salt scrubs are another common procedure
offered by day spas. Salt scrubs
involve the use of sea salts. They will
exfoliate and cleanse the skin. This often
removes the dead, top layer of skin
from the body. The result should be
clean, young and fresh looking skin.
Due to the use of exfoliating scrubs, this
procedure often focuses more on health
than relaxation.
Mud wraps are another body treatment
that many day spas offer. With
mud wraps, you often have the option
of targeting your whole body or just the
face. A mud wrap, like the Provencal
European Mud Mask, is applied to the
body. This will then work to purify, polish,
hydrate and smooth the skin. Before
the procedure begins, the skin is often
exfoliated. Afterwards, the skin may
be moisturized with a carefully chosen
cream, like body butter.
In addition to mud wraps, herbal
wraps are also available. Herbal body
wraps involve the use of steamed towels
that are wrapped around the body
or the targeted area. These towels are
first blended with the perfect combination
of scented, aromatherapy oils.
Herbal wraps cause the body to detoxify,
which results in excess fluid being
eliminated. Relaxation is another
added benefit.
Herbal moisturizing treatments are
also available for those who suffer from
constant or extreme dry skin. If you do,
this treatment may be perfect for you.
An herbal moisturizing treatment first involves
the application of cream, which
is massaged onto the body in thick
layers. An herbal wrap, which was described
above, often follows.
In addition to main procedures, such
as the ones highlighted above, there
are additional steps that can be taken.
For example, a tan bronze glow can be
applied at the end of each procedure.
Having a slight, yet safe, tan is ideal
if you are preparing for an upcoming
special event, like a wedding or a vacation.
Also, many men and women feel
better about themselves and feel more
attractive when they are tan.
There are specific areas of the body
that can be targeted, like the hands or
the feet. Spa foot treatments and hand
treatments are popular options. As for
the foot treatment, you will likely soak
your feet in warm soapy water. Next,
your feet will be scrubbed and exfoliated.
A special foot mask may also
be applied. Both hand and foot treatments
are often finished with a nail
trimming.
So, are you ready to create some
“you time?” After a spa treatment, you
will feel refreshed and relaxed and
ready to handle whatever comes your
way.
Medical Spa:
Treatments for Men
by Ace Abbey
Men may like medical spas more
than they thought they would, since
these spas offer all kinds of massages
as well as basic cosmetic procedures
Medical spas tend to attract more
women than men, but there are actually
some appealing procedures that
can be done for males. This is why
some men do choose to occasionally
make an appointment. Consider some
of the procedures available that may
appeal to males of all ages.
Men often like to be pampered just
as much as women, but often in some
different ways. While manicures
and pedicures may be available for
males, these are not as popular as
massages. They can choose massages
of varying durations, and even
different types, as some are specialized
for athletes while others are just
best for relaxation. Similarly, they can
usually benefit from hairstyling, as it is
sometimes nice to wear it a different
way. Of course, they can also get hair
removed if desired, as waxing and laser
hair removal may be performed at
many locations.
Another possibility is a procedure
that changes the look of the face.
Men who are worried about wrinkles
can get their skin smoothed out with
Botox or other injections. These are
usually not permanent, but they also
do not require incisions or a long
recovery period. Those who want a
more dramatic change may opt for
a face-lift, which a local medical spa
may offer, provided they have experienced
surgeons on-site. Males who
wish to change the look of their face
without having to undergo surgery
may choose dermal fillers. While
many of these are used to get rid of
wrinkles, they can also enhance the
face in general, as they can add volume
to the cheeks and lips. Women
are not the only ones who may desire
such changes, which is why some facilities
may offer them to anyone who
qualifies as a candidate.
A medical spa can also usually improve
the body. Some feature body
wraps that can easily get rid of toxins
and water weight. The typical man
worried about a gut or some extra
flab may benefit from a body wrap,
especially since it is usually quick
and clearly requires no recovery period
afterward. But sometimes, more
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x August 2 — 15, 2018 x 9
dramatic changes are desired, such
as liposuction. This may be available
if plastic surgeons are on-site,
but this does usually require incisions
and a recovery period. A more specific
treatment for males is liposuction
for gynecomastia, which describes
a condition in which a man’s breast
tissue is larger than usual. Since the
average man does not like having this
look, he can go to a medical spa to
try to get rid of it. It does have a recovery
period involved with it, but the
A man looking for a change in
the body or face may benefit from
checking out local spas. They do
not all provide all of these features,
but most of the popular ones do. In
fact, couples may enjoy taking a
trip there together, since they can
both improve their looks through any
of these procedures. This way, they
both feel great afterward, and neither
is bored during the visit, since
each gets a few benefits for their
appearance.
Wheelchair Games began July 29
and continue through Aug. 4. The
event is the world’s largest annual
wheelchair sports program, empowering
veterans with spinal cord
injuries, multiple sclerosis, amputations
and other neurological injuries
to live more active and healthy
lives through wheelchair sports and
recreation.
Together with Veterans Affairs,
Paralyzed Veterans of America is copresenting
the games in the hopes
to help paralyzed veterans find independence
and a new-found quality
of life. PVA programs, including
Give (Goods Inspiring Veterans
Everywhere) and Wheels Helping
Warriors, help fund PVA initiatives
such as adaptive sports programs
that help paralyzed veterans exercise
their competitive spirit. These programs
also help to ensure paralyzed
veterans and their families get the
benefits they have earned through service,
spinal cord injury and disease
research, and more. The National
