UNIFORMED YOUTH ROAD
The summer holidays have arrived and so to have the workman.
Works have commenced on the Uniformed Youth Road and are
expected to be completed by early September 2018. Users of this
road will be pleased to hear that not only will it be replaced by
a new concrete road, but a brand-new footpath shall run
alongside it to ensure safety for both pedestrians and drivers. In
addition to this the lamp columns will be replaced and fitted
with new LED lights.
We are looking forward to being able to open this new
improved road once it is completed and would like to apologise
for any disruption caused. We are confident that the result will
be worth it in the long run.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the
Uniformed Youth Groups that use this road for their on-going
cooperation.
If you have any queries about the works or access, please do
not hesitate to contact the Town Council Offices on 01245
In their letter of congratulations the Panel said:
"The Good Beginnings Panel would like to acknowledge the
how your setting is a positive, inclusive and inspiring
environment for children with autism and their families."
We will be celebrating our achievement when we return to preschool
Many thanks to the staff, committee and all our families for their
Men’s evening
Calling All Men!
If there are any men that would like to meet together one Friday
evening in November at the Eatery for a three course meal and
listen to a guest speaker.
Es Kaitell the author of a book called “I’m asking you nicely “
Es chose a fast paced life that skirted a fine line between
enforcement and crime; family life and fun; building a business
or looking for trouble. Crisis came when a savage brawl left him
with injuries serious enough to jeopardise his career as a
nightclub doorman. Should he get his revenge? The right
decision was to yield far better consequences than Es could ever
imagine!
If there are any men that would like to attend great evening.
Would you like to refurbish your
block paving & patios and
make them look new again?
At Smart Drives2 we offer an affordable and straight forward alternative
to replacing your driveway.
We provide clients with beautifully refurbished block paved driveways and
patios at a fraction of the cost.
This is achieved by using a paint which is a blend of liquid pigments and
acrylic resins that soaks deeply into paving, totally transforming and
This is an annual charity event to raise funds for our village hall
and sports facilities.
It is held in East Hanningfield Village Hall (postcode CM3 8AE)
on Saturday 22nd September from 10.00am until 5.00pm and
Sunday 23rd September 10.00am until 4.00pm.
It will be well sign posted.
The adult entry price is £1.50, children free. Wheelchair access
and parking are available.
Artists from the region enter a variety of work in different media
including photography, fabric and embroidery.
There can as many as 700 items displayed on walls with also a
range of portfolios i.e. work that is unframed and displayed on
tables. These are a great way to buy a lovely piece of art and
have your own choice of frame.
There are usually as many as 100 plus artists involved. The
exhibition is of an excellent standard and has a wide range of
appeal as well as prices for all pockets. Some of our artists also
have a selection of their work as cards. We have a resident artist
at work.
It is hoped there will be a few select craft artists displaying their
work in our upstairs room, attached to our library loft. We will
be holding our 3 monthly book sale as part of the art exhibition.
There is a huge selection of good quality, second hand books at
rock bottom prices.
There is a stair lift to enable easy access.
The WI will be running a café for refreshments.
Come and spend a pleasant hour or two with us, taking
refreshment, and enjoying some talented artists’ work and with
a chance to find a good book or two! What better way to help
us raise funds!
THE NATIONAl HEAlTH SERVICE
Feeling unwell for some time, I went to see my GP at Brickfields
Surgery on Monday afternoon.
Following a thorough check up I went to St Peters at Maldon the
following morning and had an xray and blood test and was back
home before 11am.
My GP sent for me PM the following day, (Wed} having received
the blood test results. He decided further action was suggested
and phoned the emergency assessment ward at Broomfield who
agreed to see me at once. I arrived at 4.30 and was give a further
blood test and an ECG. I then saw a Dr then a consultant who
sent me for a scan. I was home by 8.30 that evening,
All of this in 48 hours. Who says that our NHS is not working.
Thank you all at Brickfields, St Peters and Broomfield. I am very
very grateful.
Much of this success can be attributed to the simple idiom,
“charity begins at home”, so unlike most “Charity Shops” where
the profit made is sent to a national head office or regional
organisation not less than 50% is spent locally in South
Woodham Ferrers. To date over fifteen thousand pounds has
been given to local groups or causes by The Village Group with
the remainder earmarked or donated to UK registered water
related charities.
Clearly the Foundation has the ability to make a real difference to
where you live and beyond; however it can't continue to operate
unless more people come forward and help staff the shop.
The shop is simply a vehicle that converts generously donated
items into cash, but it takes time, time to sort the donations, time
to price the articles, time to serve the customers, time to cash up,
time to do the correct book-keeping in order to be transparent,
time to comply with all of the red tape and time to keep the
village informed, via social media, our website and publications
like this.
Regretfully the number of helpers that we have at present is just
not enough to ensure that all of the above is being done
efficiently and consequently more and more work is falling on
the shoulders of the few, something that can't go on indefinitely.
In particular the shop needs reliable sales assistants to operate
the till on a regular basis or to provide holiday cover and
although this might sound daunting and something that you
have no experience of, rest assured the till does not bite, it will
not break if you press the wrong button and full training will be
given before you are thrown in at the deep end.
Volunteers of any age are welcome, be they sixteen or sixty; at
sixty it is a reason to get up in the morning and at sixteen it will
look good on you CV when job hunting.
So, in a nutshell, unless more helpers come forward a wellconceived
and proven idea to benefit the community as a whole
is likely to drown in its own success, only you have the lifebelt.
love one another as I have loved you
There has been a lot in the press recently about the growth in hate crime. Hate crime is an attack
on someone who is perceived to be different, be it race, nationality, religion or sexuality. People
who commit hate crime use this difference as an excuse for verbal or physical abuse. It’s so sad
that there are people who see difference as a threat rather than a gift. I have travelled a lot,
and I have been to many countries where I am the minority, as a white person, as an English
person, as a Christian in a Muslim area. And I have received a warm welcome in these places.
Often people are curious and want to know more about my life and my country. Sometimes
people ask strange questions: Have you met the Queen? Do you live in a castle? Why don’t you speak other
languages? Sometimes people think we eat rubbish food, we are aloof, and we don’t really like other cultures. The
prejudices people have may seem daft to us, and our perceptions of people who are different are probably equally
daft. Jesus said, ‘Love one another as I have loved you’ (John 15:12). There was a lot of prejudice in his day too,
but he reached out to children, women, lepers, tax collectors, Romans, sinners… His own followers came from many
and diverse backgrounds. We don’t know the story behind the refugee, the transsexual, the Muslim. But if we did
there is no doubt we have much to learn from each other. Every time I meet some different, I come away wiser and
with a new perspective. That is the gift of diversity. Perhaps if we all start embracing the differences amongst us,
we will deter the haters. That’s what Jesus would do. His commandment to love one another gives us a powerful
yet simple and practical way to make our society and our world a much better place.
DYING WITHOUT LAWYERS. It's hard to know how many people
are lying in hospital in a vegetative state in the UK but it's certainly
in excess of 100. In the most extreme of these cases uncovered by
BBC Radio 4's Today programme, a patient cared for by the
Western Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland had been
in a minimally conscious state for 20 years. I suspect most people
who are in the process of making a 'living will' would say: "What's
the point? If I end up like that then please pull the plug and leave
me alone to let nature take its course."
The suspicion is that a lot of these patients were left in limbo
because few wanted to embark on the legal process that was
required until this week. Many seemingly considered the time, the
stress, and the costs prohibitive.
All that has changed. Alex Matthews-King writing in The
Independent says: "Families will no longer need to go before the
courts for approval to withdraw feeding tubes from loved ones in
a permanent vegetative state, after the UK’s highest court upheld
a ruling on the end-of-life decision-making of a man with
extensive brain injury. The 52-year-old man, who can only be
identified as Mr Y, had been in a vegetative state since June 2017.
Experts said it was improbable he would ever regain consciousness
and agreed with family members’ decision to withdraw hydration
and nutrition – something which usually requires approval from
the Court of Protection ... The decision means where doctors and
families are in agreement of the best interests of patients there
should be no need for a judge’s authorisation – a process which
can take years to complete and cost local health authorities tens
of thousands in legal bills for appeals."
Not everyone agrees with this decision, warning that a "vital legal
safeguard" has now been compromised.
Furthermore, NHS managers, many of whom have been in a
vegetative state for years, are deeply concerned about this turn
of events.
For our auction we would be grateful for anything you want to
get rid of. Come on the day and bring your husbands. (Women's
Institute notice.)
THE GAP BETWEEN RICH AND POOR. Richard Bilton, Reporter for
this week's BBC Panorama, writes: " The life expectancy gap
between rich and poor people in England has been widening for
nearly two decades. The rich stay healthy longer. The poor die
younger. That bleak assessment is based on national data.
Stockton-on-Tees is the town with England's biggest gap in life
expectancy, according to Public Health England, and resident Rob
Hill, who is only 46, is getting ready for his death. A lifetime of
cigarettes and poor food have taken their toll and Rob has
numerous health problems including emphysema, lymphoedema
and type 2 diabetes. Two years ago he was given six months to
live. Rob's on borrowed time."
'I've made a few bad choices," he told Panorama. "Smoking -
worst choice I could have ever made in my life." Needless to say,
it's hard for his kids to watch their Dad, dependent on his oxygen
supply, getting sicker by the day.
Solving the rich/poor health divide continues to defeat the
country's best minds. You don't have to be a member of Mensa,
though, to realise that prevention is better than cure.
If you want to pull the wool over your wife's eyes, you need to
have a good yarn. Gyles Brandreth
ABORTION PILLS ONLINE. Jean Mackenzie reports that
programme reports that "Women in England are illegally buying
the abortion pill over the internet because they cannot get to
clinics to take it." The story was made public by BBC's Victoria
Derbyshire programme.
We're told that: "In England, women must take the pill at a
hospital or clinic, before travelling home for the abortion process
to begin. But the effects can start within 30 minutes. One woman
said she had started to pass her pregnancy in the taxi home. The
Department of Health said it was monitoring the evidence on
home use. Scotland and Wales have both recently changed the
law to allow women to take the pill at home."
The practice is widespread. JM tells us that: "Over the past three
years, drug enforcement officers had seized almost 10,000 sets of
abortion pills heading to addresses in Britain, the Medicines and
Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) told the Victoria
Derbyshire programme."
There are two pills which are used for 'early' medical abortion and
they must be taken 24 to 48 hours apart - and going back to the
clinic for the second pill is the problem. JM says that The Royal
College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has now
called on England's Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, to change the
legislation so that women can take the second pill at home.
I went to a massage parlour. It was self service! Rodney
OLD JOKE FINALLY VINDICATED BY NEWS STORY. We have known
for a long time that condoms have to be rigorously checked. Back
in 2014 The Telegraph's Harry Wallop published an article on Steve
Abbott, Britain’s unofficial chief condom tester. Wallop says: "In
practice, this means he blows up condoms for a living. “I’ve
probably blown up over a million in my time,” says Abbott, who
has worked at the company for 20 years. As the company tests
around 3,000 prophylactics a week, he is not exaggerating. He also
tests surgical gloves, but says he much prefers condoms"
When Steve Abbott says he blows up condoms, let me clarify ... no
explosives are involved. Wallop explains: "The two main tests that
condoms are put through are a “burst volume and pressure test”,
which involves slipping a condom onto a mandrel, and slowly
pumping it full of air. To gain a Kitemark it has to take between
16 litres and 22 litres of air before bursting (depending on the size
of the condom). Most high quality ones can take as much as 45
litres, making the condom blow up to the size of a full-sized
dachshund dog before bursting. The other test is a “freedom from
pinhole” test. Abbot fills a condom with 300ml of water then,
after having wiped off any lubrication, he rolls the filled condom
around a piece of blotting paper, squeezing it as if he were a
magician at a child’s party and about to construct a balloon
animal."
And the news story ... this week the BBC reports that "Condom
maker Durex has recalled some of its products sold in the UK and
Ireland over fears they could split. Ten batches of its non-latex Real
Feel and Latex Free condoms with expiry dates between December
2020 and February 2021 are not passing "stringent shelf-life tests".
As a result, they could burst if used towards the end of their expiry
dates. The company has apologised and offered refunds to
customers."
And the old joke ... "Durex condoms - approved to BSI Kitemark
3102. (What of it? So was the Titanic!)"
ARMED FORCES DAY AT STOW
Over 1000 people attended Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome’s ‘Stow At War’ event this weekend. The immensely popular event
saw aircraft take to the Summer skies in a magnificent air display. The public were also treated to performances from Living Historians
The Great War Society, 10th Essex and the Royal Navy Blue Jackets. The Stampe Formation Team, led by the famous Chris Jesson, were
a delight to watch, as well as the WW1 AHT BE2-E, Nieuport 17 and many more.
Chief Executive Ian Flint said: “It fills the heart with emotion to see these classic aircraft flying in the skies above Essex. With hundreds
of members of the local and regional communities present, the atmosphere was wonderful – a great family day. We hope to repeat
the event next year, and if our planning application is granted by Maldon District Council, we know it will make many residents of
Essex very happy indeed!”
EYOTT SAIlING ClUB SUMMER SOCIAl EVENTS
During July, we have had two excellent social events, first the
breakfast race held early one Sunday morning. Eleven people
sailed and thirty-one sat down afterwards for a full English
breakfast. The weather was glorious so we were able to sit
outside in our lovely grounds.
Two weeks later over 50 people enjoyed the warm evening at
Eyott Sailing Club’s summer BBQ and buffet. The evening event
is scheduled around high tide in Fenn Creek allowing members
from other clubs to row or sail up to Eyott. It was lovely to
welcome two gigs and a cruiser from South Woodham Ferrers
Yacht Club. It is a long time since such a large vessel moored in
the creek. Ex- members, who learnt to sail at the club were
visiting from Aberdeen Boat Club / Aberdeen Racing Academy in
Hong Kong where they continue to enjoy their sailing,
participating in international events. Eyott members provided
a superb selection of salads and sweets to compliment the BBQ.
Many of our guests left as the tide turned having enjoyed a
fantastic evening.
If you are interested in joining our family dinghy sailing club
come and visit us. Check our website
(http://www.eyottsailingclub.org.uk) for the next taster day
or ring the Commodore, Alan Brunning on 01245 322282 for a
trial sail. We also have kayak paddle board members
lOCAl GOlFER SElFlESS SARAH HONOURED BY PGA
“The cancer Wendy has is extremely rare,” explained Bennett, a
PGA Fellow Professional. “The plan is to start a charity for people
who have this rare form of cancer.
“There are support groups for other dreadful forms of cancer
but Wendy has had nobody to speak to except me. For me, that’s
massively important.
“We also want to set up in the UK the first pod, if you want to
call it that, for thymic carcinoma.
Sarah was presented with her award by PGA captain John Heggarty at the
Association’s annual cocktail party on the eve of the 147th Open Championship
at Carnoustie.
Sarah Bennett, a golf pro from Essex who is as well known for
the hours she devotes to helping the less fortunate as she is for
her excellence as a coach, has received a prestigious PGA award.
Sarah is the head professional at Three Rivers Golf & Country
Club, has won the Association’s Toby Sunderland Award, an
accolade given annually to celebrate the many wide-ranging
charitable achievements by PGA pros across Great Britain and
Ireland.
Sarah’s work for charity over the years has included the Golf Fore
Recovery initiative for wounded and sick services personnel and
Canine Partners.
Her latest involvement, however, is not only her most
challenging but also very close to home.
It is the result of her friend and Under 18 boys and girls England
Golf East regional manager, Wendy Lodder, contracting an
extremely rare form of cancer.
The 51-year-old was diagnosed with thymic carcinoma in 2016
and has subsequently undergone two major thorasic surgeries
as well as chemotherapy and immunotherapy in a bid to combat
the disease.
“And I’m pleased to say that’s well on its way. Unfortunately
there are only two specialists in the UK who have any idea about
this chest cancer but King’s College, London, will hopefully be
joining forces with Guy’s Cancer Centre, London, to increase their
expertise.”
In terms of hitting their financial target, the pair are almost
halfway there and hoping a fundraising golf day at Three Rivers
next week will go a long way towards making up the difference.
The £1,200 that goes with the Toby Sunderland Award, however,
is an unexpected bonus.
“I’m humbled and surprised to receive the award,” Sarah added.
“But I’m delighted for the charity - hopefully it will help raise
awareness of the disease, which is what Wendy wants. It’s the
only way people will understand what this type of cancer is.”
There were seven candidates in the running - one from each PGA
region -but Bennett was the unanimous choice. “There were
seven very worthy entries,” said Tristan Crew, the PGA’s executive
director - Member services.
“But Sarah’s achievement is all about true charity. It’s about
giving her personal time to support individuals who are more
needy than herself.
“I first became aware of her charity work and what she was
doing in my last career, which was in the British army.
“In 2009 she was working with Colchester Garrison with injured
service personnel, teaching them golf and using it as a
rehabilitation tool.
“Meanwhile, in a parallel world, I was setting up the Battleback
golf programme but Sarah did everythng herself without any
support really from the military apart from goodwill.
Wendy’s plight has prompted the two women to set about
raising £20,000 to fund research into the disease and form a
charity to support people who contract it.
“She did one-to-one and group coaching, raised funds for a
Huxley artificial green to be installed at Colchester Garrison. She
ran a golf challenge between all the army recovery centres and
a fundraising day for Canine Partners.
“Now she has embarked on a cause to help her friend and those
who suffer from this rare form of cancer and I’m delighted she
has been chosen to receive the Toby Sunderland Award.”
