Standard 4.3 Analyses and responds to problems related to<br />

patient treatment and care<br />

This standard relates to the ability of radiographers and radiation therapists to access,<br />

and interpret clinical information and apply professional judgement to formulate an<br />

objective response. It looks at their capacity to recognise and define problems within<br />

the patient care setting, and to develop a strategy to solve these. It also incorporates<br />

evaluation of the proposed solution.<br />

Element 1: Identify problems as they arise in clinical practice<br />

1. Reflect upon clinical practice to<br />

recognise potential problems as they<br />

arise<br />

• Predicts potential problems, and reacts<br />

appropriately to prevent the problem or<br />

minimise its effect.<br />

• Addresses problems which directly impact<br />

on immediate workflow as they occur.<br />

2. Analyses the reason for the<br />

problem<br />

• Ascertains and describes the cause of<br />

problems.<br />

• Analyses and describes factors which may<br />

lead to an escalation of the issue.<br />

• Identifies all involved factors to ensure a<br />

comprehensive understanding of the<br />

problem.<br />

Element 2: Apply knowledge and experience to solve problems and ensure care is<br />

delivered to achieve best practice<br />

1. Develops a plan for resolving the<br />

problem.<br />

Cues<br />

• Explores options to resolve the issue.<br />

• Formulates varying approaches to resolve<br />

the problem.<br />

• Selects the most appropriate solution for<br />

the best possible outcome.<br />

• Applies critical thinking and problem<br />

solving strategies when indicated.<br />

2. Uses a collaborative approach to<br />

reach a resolution<br />

• Aim to find a solution which suits all<br />

affected parties wherever possible.<br />

• Gain the cooperation of all parties in the<br />

implementation of the agreed solution to<br />

the problem.<br />

Element 3: Monitors and reviews the issue and modifies solutions as required<br />
