Tech Session Series: Discount Tire By Michael Baynton, Region Tech Session Chair On Sunday, July 22, over 50 Mavs gathered at the Discount Tire store on Ohio Drive in Plano to learn everything there is to know about Porsche tire engineers and tire manufacturers, and how they work together to bring out the best in our cars. To begin the discussion, store manager Todd Eaddy spoke with great depth and experience about N-spec tires, which is a tire manufacturer code that indicates that certain tires have been engineered specifically to handle the requirement of Porsche automobiles. While Porsche isn’t the only manufacturer to require special tire construction and materials for its vehicles, being aware of these construction variances is important to ensure that your Porsche handling characteristics are optimized. Also note that equipping your Porsche vehicle with tires that do not carry the N-spec rating could affect some warranty coverage. Todd also explained the differences between ultrahigh performance summer tires, track-specific rubber, and all-season performance options. Clearly, your intended usage and driving habits should inform your tire purchase decisions. Overall, though, current tire construction technology and rubber compounds across all categories is vastly superior to tires from even five or ten years ago. Throughout the session, Todd was gracious in answering a multitude of questions about specific applications. Lest the group get “tired” of rubber talk, Todd invited everyone into the workshop area, where he demonstrated their state-of-the-art tire mounting and pphotos by Bill Orr tire balancing equipment, as well as specific tools and jacks needed to work on both old and new Porsches. This store even carries “lollipops” to ensure that older air-cooled 911s can be raised using proper jacking points. We also learned that Discount Tire is an industry leader in employee safety and installs special cages to ensure that tires are inflated without risk of injury. When the rubber hits the road, these tech sessions are made successful by knowledgeable hosts, the interest of our members, and a small army of Mav volunteers who show up early and help with setup and logistics.
