Kenya Airways Helps to Rescue Lion Cub
Kenya Airways and wildlife charity Born Free have airlifted a
one-year-old lion cub to the Shamwari Big Cat Rescue Sanctuary
in South Africa.
According to Born Free, the cub – called King – was rescued
from an apartment in Paris last summer where he was being kept
illegally as a pet in appalling conditions. “We were delighted to
assist in King’s amazing relocation,” said Regional Cargo Manager
Europe & America Kenya Airways Katrina Hanson. “We have
worked with Born Free for many years, carrying rescued lions from
Europe to Africa so they can enjoy being a lion.”
After being cared for at Natuurhulpcentrum rescue centre in
Belgium, King was taken by Born Free to London Heathrow
Airport for a flight to Johannesburg, courtesy of Kenya Airways.
Green Charcoal
As Africa’s demand for energy continues to rise,
trees are at risk of being cut down to satisfy the
demands for wood and charcoal.
Wildlife Works, Kenya Airways’ offsetting carbon partner,
has pioneered a programme aimed at reducing reliance on
indigenous trees for charcoal production. The eco-charcoal
programme produces sustainable charcoal using pruned
branches from indigenous trees.
The process is an efficient one, where the harvested cuttings
are put through a carbonising process in modified kilns. The
dried charcoal is then mixed with a binder and is compressed
into convenient briquettes by a mechanical pressing machine.
This is not only an affordable alternative to the regular
destructive charcoal, but also a way of creating jobs for local
people whose alternative for survival was making bush charcoal.
The briquettes are then packaged for sale at US$0.10 each to
local communities and institutions.
Traditional charcoal production is a major cause of deforestation
in Kenya. Using eco-charcoal avoids destroying our forests
and creates sustainable employment.
