AUTUMN LEAVES REMEMBERED
BY “KIND OF BLUE”
"Kind of Blue", a local modern jazz group is next performing in
Bell, Woodham Ferrers on Monday, 24th September 8.30-11 p.m.
One of the numbers we will be playing is "Autumn Leaves".
This was originally a 1945 French song, derived from a ballet,
and called "Les Fueilles Mortes" (literally the dead leaves).
Yves Montand, a French movie director introduced it to the
general public in his film of 1946 called "Les Portes de la nuit"
(the doors of the night).
Later Billy Mercer, a top lyricist, added the English words used
today.
As it was such a beautiful song, it was eagerly snapped up and
used by many diverse performers (e.g.Doris Day, the Everly
brothers, Eva Cassidy and Bob Dylan).
Its chord progressions are very similar to those used in many
other jazz tunes, so it became a favourite of musicians such as
Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck.
If you want to hear just how good this piece is, as a modern jazz
standard, listen to"Kind of Blue's" instrumental rendering of it
in the Bell on the 24th- entry and sandwiches are free.
See you there.
LITTLE BADDOW WI REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2018
On September 6th, our Centenary
celebrations continued for our
members with a posh Cream Tea being
served at the meeting, The Committee
worked very hard to organise this,
dressing the tables with our own china
Tea Sets, Coffee pots and Table linen.
There were vases of fresh flowers and bountiful supplies of
finger sandwiches, delicate cakes and beautiful scones with
clotted cream and jam. Then we were thoroughly entertained
by our speaker Jane Malyon, with an interesting and interactive
session on the etiquette and history of the Great British
Afternoon Tea.
At our October 4th meeting we will be hearing from John
Stirling with a talk entitled “From Toy Town to Buckingham
Palace”. He was practically born on stage, and has spent his life
in theatre and television. I don't know if he spent any time
playing the Tail end of a Donkey in his career, but he now spends
his life rescuing Donkeys.
And looking forward to our November 1st meeting, where we
will hear from Seona Ford, Chair of the DLS Society, about the
Life and works of the Fascinating Dorothy L Sayers. Dorothy was
born in Oxford, bought a house for her mum in Witham, where
she became a resident herself for the last 28 years of her life. A
renowned crime writer of books and plays, Dorothy also penned
poetry. A Christian Humanist, she concentrated the later years of
her life Religious themes; translations and essays.
We hold our meetings on the first Thursday of the month, at the
Memorial Hall Little Baddow from 2pm till 4.30pm We are a very
friendly group of all ages with a great committee to keep our
WI full of fun and diversity, Coach trips to and Art & craft days,
also a Knit/crochet/sew/craft subgroup where you can help us
with our latest charity project or just chat and do your own thing
on the second Thursday of the month.
‘TURN UP THE BEAT’
Following my recent successful appeal
for help in the Focus last month I should
like say a little more about what the
aims of Mister Gees Foundation are and
how the Warwick Parade shop fits into
the picture.
As somebody who knows just how much
water it takes to make one bottle of
wine or a pint of beer it always sat a
little uneasy with me that whilst most of
us imbibed freely there are millions of
people who lack access to
clean drinking water and
sanitation. The recent
drought in Cape Town has
highlighted that it is not only
remote villages in third world
countries that are facing this
problem.
THE FRINGE COMES TO CHELMSFORD AND THE AUDIENCE DECIDE WHAT TO PAY!
Chris Dobrowolski with his Triumph Herald
which he drove to Italy where the car was
designed.
A new and exciting
season of cutting-edge
comedy straight from The
Edinburgh Fringe will be
hitting the Cramphorn
Studio's stage this month
as the Un Civic Arts
season begins.
Un Civic Arts will be
ripping up the theatre
rule book with edgy,
exciting and ultracontemporary
performances, and a new
way for audiences to pay
for the show! In a bold
move Un Civic Arts will let
the audience pay what
they think the show was
worth, after seeing the
performance.
Ian Knowles, theatre
manager, explains the ethos behind ‘Pay What You Decide':
"When we curated this new season of raw, brave talent we
realised that the theatre had to be equally brave with the
audience to encourage them to see these fantastic shows. ‘Pay
What You Decide' allows people to book tickets for free, watch
the show, and then pay what they decide based on their
experience of the show". Ian continues: "If the audience member
loved the show they may want to make a generous payment,
but if it wasn't their cup of tea, there is no pressure for payment.
This new payment structure removes risk for the audience and
we look forward to welcoming lots of new faces to the Civic to
enjoy a feast of talent!"
Kicking off the season is Chris Dobrowolski with his ‘All Roads
Lead to Rome' on Thursday 20 September. Chris is based in
Braintree and his show follows his story that starts with him
restoring the family car, a beloved Triumph Herald Estate. Chris
then drives the much-loved Triumph to Turin, Italy, where the car
was designed, along the way he explores his father's history as a
Polish solider fighting in Italy during World War 2. ‘All Roads
Lead to Rome' is a quick-witted, fast paced journey through
consumerism, communism and classic car mechanics, what's not
to love about that?
Next up is performance artist and liar Tom Cassani, who
showcases his ‘Someone Loves You Drive with Care' on Thursday
27 September. Trained in sleight of hand, Tom will expose the
techniques of deception and teach you how to spot it in action.
Using his skills Tom will explore truth, honesty, manipulation and
fabrication. Tom will also examine moments in time that might
have happened, that have never happened, and those that will
never happen!
All Un Civic Arts shows start at 8pm. For full details and to book
OVER TO YOU.....
I just wish it could be EVERY Monday!
I went to the last performance by “Kind of Blue” at The Bell,
Woodham Ferrers, and thoroughly enjoyed a great evening’s
entertainment.
Played by a group of obviously very experienced musicians, I was
impressed by their renditions of so many great songs.
With free admission, free sandwiches and a friendly clientele I
would recommend you try it out soon. You won’t regret getting
off that sofa on a Monday evening!
would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to the wonderful Lee
generosity in donating and fitting our shop with full 25 hour
CCTV.
Being a shop on two floors sadly we had become the easy target
for shoplifters and after hearing of our problem they
immediately offered to help, the CCTV was fitted very quickly
and with 2 hours we had already caught our first shoplifter. We
cannot thank them enough, not only did they do a wonderful
job, they also bought a car boot full of donations for us too. We
can highly recommend these two genuine guys for all your
security needs.
guidance to keeping your home clean and healthy.
“But My Carpets Don’t Look Dirty” Looks aren’t everything! Cleaning is not just for appearance, it’s for health. Imagine if you
only washed your bed linens when they looked dirty. Yuk! See, the reason we wash our sheets several times a month, is because we
know there are things we can’t see that need to be cleaned out of there. Right? Well it’s the same with your carpet. One example of
unseen soils is the house dust-mite, and its waste
.
“A Clean Home Is A Healthy Home”
In the average home over two million dust-mites feed on dead skin
scales. They hide in your carpet, upholstery, curtains, mattresses, and
pillows. Mites can double their numbers in ten hours, and they can
produce ten to twenty pieces of faeces per day. You will get one
hundred thousand dead bodies and thirty million pieces of faeces added
to your home every day. We need to upgrade our standard of health.
Mite faeces are so small that they can float in the air for hours. As you
walk around your house you breathe it in, and it gets into your lungs.
Eighty percent of Britons who suffer from allergies are allergic to
airborne mite refuse.
Fact: One tenth of the weight of a two-year-old pillow is
dust mite faeces! Your home is a dust mite nursery, and
you could be swimming in their unhealthy mire.
The Light
We all have a gift of communication. What sets us apart from other species, is the
ability to consider and formulate what we say or respond to what we have heard;
and express ourselves in different ways. There are animals that appear to have similar
skills but, not having the ability to use other ways of communicating, they nurture
and support each other on a more basic level, yet effective.
Communication is a two-way operation. We are the same species, trying to live our lives out in Love, Joy and Peace. How we listen
is more important than what we say. In the Bible the tongue is referred to as a rudder on a large boat, insofar as it appears to
be small in relation to the scale of the boat, yet it`s influence can be huge.
The ability to consider what we have heard before speaking, emailing, texting, posting in whatever form (words or pictures) is
important. It is important that we do not stop talking to each other in whatever form but appreciate that we are different, in
different situations and not fall into judgement without a full appreciation of the other situation. Life can be hard enough, at
times, and what we say (and sometimes it can be good to talk) should be True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, and Kind.
It is important that children are encouraged to have a voice. The environment that they are brought up in, whether home,
school or clubs, will involve people of different ages and stations in life and examples should be set of open conversation, a
listening and guidance. If the rudder is not controlled, the boat goes off course.
We have all seen or heard the news where it is upsetting and disturbing and we state that those involved are worst than animals.
This suggests that animals are worst behaved in general than us. Sometimes I feel that the gifts that we have been given as
mentioned earlier are misused and we fail ourselves and others.
We are capable of acts of kindness and encouragement which improve each other’s lives. We need to guard against thoughtless
comment.
POLLUTED BABIES. EurekAlert reports that evidence of tiny particles of
carbon, typically created by burning fossil fuels, has been found in
placentas for the first time. This is taken from new research presented at
the European Respiratory Society International Congress.
We all know, of course, that smoking in pregnancy harms babies ... and
previous research has indicated links between pregnant mothers'
exposure to air pollution and premature birth, low birth weight, infant
mortality and childhood respiratory problems.
EurekAlert tells us that "the new study adds to existing evidence on the
dangers of pollution for unborn babies and suggests that when pregnant
women breathe polluted air, sooty particles are able to reach the
placenta via the bloodstream."
Dr Lisa Miyashita, based at Queen Mary University of London is quoted
by Eurekalert: "We've known for a while that air pollution affects foetal
development and can continue to affect babies after birth and
throughout their lives. We were interested to see if these effects could
be due to pollution particles moving from the mother's lungs to the
placenta. Until now, there has been very little evidence that inhaled
particles get into the blood from the lung."
The article goes on to explain that the researchers worked with five
pregnant women who were all living in London and were due to have
planned caesarean section deliveries at 'The Royal London', the hospital
on the busy Whitechapel Road featured in 'Call the Midwife'. The
Hospital's Cup (a rugby 'tournament' that was contested by all the
London medical schools and was usually won by St Mary's in my day due
to the presence in the side of a certain JPR Williams) engendered intense
rivalry ... so much so that it was usual to carry out pranks prior to the cup
final. One student managed to steal the skeleton of the Elephant man
from the Hospital Museum and take it back to Barts - where he narrowly
escaped being 'expelled' (which would have deprived the world of an
eminent dermatologist.) Anyone caught raiding The London was taken
to the 'plaster room' (usually reserved for patients with fractures),
encased in plaster from the neck down, and carried out to the middle of
the Whitechapel road where he was laid between two bollards as the
traffic thundered by. They all survived ... although, surprisingly, none of
them complained about the pollution to which they had been subjected.
I'll write to the European Respiratory Society as it seems unaware of this
interesting fact - indeed, it might inspire its members to undertake a
further research project.
I digress. In the recent research project, the Mums (none of whom played
rugby) were all non-smokers with an uncomplicated pregnancy and each
one gave birth to a healthy baby. The women all gave permission to
researchers (who were particularly interested in 'scavenger' cells called
placental macrophages) to study their placentas after delivery.
Macrophages exist in many different parts of the body ... they are part
of the immune system and work by engulfing harmful particles, such as
bacteria and pollution particles. In the placenta they also help to protect
the foetus.
The team studied a total of 3,500 placental macrophage cells from the
five placentas and examined them under a high-powered microscope in
the hope of finding 'sooty particles' ... and, to their surprise, they found
quite a lot. I say 'to their surprise' because they were expecting the
macrophages in people's airways to mop up most of the carbon
'pollution particles' - so very little would spread in the bloodstream.
They said: "We were not sure if we were going to find any particles and
if we did find them, we were only expecting to find a small number of
placental macrophages that contain these sooty particles." This is
because most of them should be engulfed by macrophages within the
airways, particularly the bigger particles, and only a minority of small
sized particles would move into the circulation. Could these particles also
move across into the foetus? It's possible but the particles do not need
to get into the baby's body to have an adverse effect, because if they
have an effect on the placenta, this in itself will have a direct impact on
the foetus."
The article contains a quote from an eminent Professor called Mina Gaga
(NOT to be confused with Lady Gaga.) She said: "Previous research shows
that pregnant women living in polluted cities are more prone to
pregnancy issues such as restricted foetal growth, premature birth and
low birth weight babies. The evidence suggests that an increased risk of
low birth-weight can happen even at levels of pollution that are lower
than the European Union recommended annual limit. This new research
suggests a possible mechanism of how babies are affected by pollution
while being theoretically protected in the womb. This should raise
awareness amongst clinicians and the public regarding the harmful
effects of air pollution in pregnant women. We need stricter policies for
cleaner air to reduce the impact of pollution on health worldwide
because we are already seeing a new population of young adults with
health issues."
SOUTH WOODHAM
FOCUS
FOCUS ON HEALTH
It's unlikely that 'Mums-to-be' living in even the busiest areas of SWF
would be exposed to anything like the level's of pollution typically seen
in a big city. Even so, it makes sense to reduce traffic pollution in the
town to the bare minimum - e.g. avoiding using cars for short journeys
within the town and instead walking or biking (and making the town
even more 'bike friendly' than it is now.)
THE EUROPEAN FAT LEAGUE. The UK is the 'third fattest country in
Europe', according to figures published by the World Health
Organisation. Kat Lay in The Times adds that "Some 27.8 per cent of
adults in the United Kingdom are obese, a rate exceeded only by Turkey
(32.1 per cent) and Malta (28.9 per cent). The average in the European
region is 23.3 per cent" (and even that is a recipe for disaster.)
The article adds that: "the figures are included in the latest version of a
report by the WHO into health in Europe, which is updated every three
years. It found that across the region, people lived on average more than
one year longer than they did five years ago. Despite the improvement,
it warned that smoking, alcohol, obesity and under-vaccination remained
“real causes for concern”.
Ben Spicer in The Mail comes up with much the same facts and figures:
"UN study found that two in three of us are overweight and one in four
is obese. It blamed the crisis on lack of exercise, poor diet and heavy
drinking."
This hasn't happened overnight. Jen Mills wrote in the Metro back in
2017: "26.9% of adult men are classed as obese – the highest in Europe
by some distance. Things aren’t much better for women either, as they
are the second fattest in Europe, with 29.2% classed as obese. As a
nation, we’re so overweight that it’s putting us at risk of dying from
diabetes, heart disease and strokes, the study warned."
On the same day as her article on obesity was published in The Times, Kat
Lay wrote: "Amputations for diabetes at 120 a week" ... adding "The
number of foot and toe amputations linked to diabetes has risen by
more than a quarter since 2013. More than 120 such amputations
happen each week, according to figures published by Labour. In 1998,
only three per cent of adults in England were diagnosed with diabetes.
By 2016 that had more than doubled to seven per cent. Experts say that
rising rates of obesity, inactivity and poor diet, all key factors in type 2
diabetes, have played a role in the increase. Type 2 diabetes is linked to
tooth decay, blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and dementia,
as well as potential limb amputation."
Alexandra Thompson wrote in The Mail that "Diabetes causes around
24,000 premature deaths a year" adding that "Type 2 diabetes'
prevalence has more than doubled over the past decade due to rising
rates of obesity, inactivity and unhealthy eating." She reminds us that
"Treating the disease takes up 10 per cent, or £10 billion, of the NHS'
budget."
Meanwhile, Cosmopolitan magazine has been roundly criticised for Tess
Holliday's cover shoot which has been accused of 'promoting obesity'
The South Woodham practices are trying to find all the patients that may
be classified as 'prediabetic' in the hope that, if the risks they are running
are clearly explained to them and help is offered, they might take action
(thereby sparing themselves the complications associated with the
disease.) The number of patients we are finding who fall into this
category is truly astonishing. We'll keep you posted.
DIY KIDNEY STONE REMOVAL. Riding on some types of roller-coaster is
an effective way of removing kidney stones, according to Pallab Ghosh,
Science correspondent for BBC News. This is the conclusion of research
that has won this year's Ig Nobel Prize for Medicine.
The article goes on to say: "The patient reported that one of his kidney
stones became dislodged after a ride on the Big Thunder Mountain ride.
Wondering whether it was caused by the ride or a coincidence, the
patient went on the ride several more times and each time a stone
popped out. Prof Wartinger (his consultant) built a silicone model of his
patient's renal system, including artificial kidney stones, and took it with
him on numerous rides. He discovered that Big Thunder Mountain was
indeed effective - more so than the scarier rides such as Space Mountain
or Rock 'n' Roller Coaster which involve prolonged drops. Prof Wartinger
concluded that this was because Big Thunder Mountain involves more
up and down and side to side movements that 'rattle' the rider."
The Roller Coaster is not yet approved by the NHS so I'm afraid that those
of you afflicted will have to undergo more boring treatments such as
lithotripsy, whereby kidney stones are broken up into 'gravel' that can be
passed with the urine by a device which delivers ultrasound shock waves.
If you want to combine excitement with treatment, however, you can, of
course, 'go private' ... there's a version of the Big Thunder Mountain ride
at Disneyland, Paris ... but you do so at your own risk.
‘BATTLES OVER’ CENTENARY OF THE END OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR
Maldon District Commemoration of the centenary
of the end of the First World War
Maldon District Council, with the support of Maldon Town
Council and the Trustees of the Moot Hall and the Maeldune
Centre, is pleased to announce that the Danger Tree exhibitions
are coming to Maldon as part of the commemorations of the
centenary of the end of WWI. The exhibitions support the
‘Battles Over’ commemoration event on the evening of 11
November in Promenade Park.
The Danger Tree comprises two different free interactive art
exhibitions commemorating World War I, and a pre-exhibition
evening talk. The art exhibitions include original paintings and
limited edition prints using state-of-the-art augmented reality
(AR) software to bring each piece alive through poetry,
animation and music. Visitors will be offered the technology to
watch the paintings transform into an immersive 3D experience,
using hand-held devices and headphones, with each telling the
compelling story of soldiers who fought and fell in the Great War
from 1914 to 1918. The devices are provided free of charge to
experience this ground-breaking event. Created by awardwinning
artists Scarlett Raven and Marc Marot, this is the first
time The Danger Tree has come to Essex, following criticallyacclaimed
showcases in London, Manchester Belfast, Liverpool
and Birmingham.
Introduction to the Danger Tree exhibition: 25 October – 7pm: an
opportunity to learn more about the Danger Tree exhibition by
Marc Marot. To be held, with the kind permission of the Minister,
at the United Reformed Church, Maldon. Free admission.
Maeldune Centre: 27 October to 13 November: an exhibition
showing ten portraits of soldiers from the Great War, amongst
which will be one centred on a Maldon story.
Moot Hall: 27 October to 18 November: this exhibition depicts
images of the Great War buried within Scarlett Raven’s
impressionistic landscape oil paintings. Each painting triggers
augmented reality to reveal harrowing narrative of the fallen while
reminding us of the impact on loved ones. This exhibition contains
fascinating animation, music, and wartime poetry narrated by
acclaimed actors including Vicky McClure and Sean Bean.
‘Battles Over’ at the Promenade Park: 11 November: this
commemoration event is an opportunity for all residents to
honour all those who gave their lives during WWI. The event will
feature a collection of silhouettes of WWI soldiers which the
District Council has made available to all the parish councils in
the District, offering them an opportunity for the community’s
expression of remembrance. More details of the commemoration
event will be available closer to the date.
In anticipation of further commemoration events throughout
the District, the Maldon District Tourist information Centre has
created a dedicated web page of information -
visitmaldondistrict.co.uk/battlesover listing events which are
taking place up to 11 November. Please email tic@maldon.gov.uk
to let them know of any plans that you or your community has
to mark this occasion.
HATFIELD PEVERAL FC U16
PANTHERS 3 – 3 SWFU FC U16 LIONS.
Blackwater and Dengie League U16 Division Two match.
When a ‘Pride of Roaring Lions’ meets a ‘Claw of Growling
Panthers’ for the first time, you can be assured the resulting
game is likely to be ferociously competitive. Last Sunday’s match
didn’t disappoint, when the SWFU U16 Lions travelled to Hatfield
Peverel Panthers in their latest Division Two match.
The Lions again fielded a very strong squad. Ollie ‘Mr Safe-
Hands’ between the sticks; Morgan, Captain Edward, James O,
Callum, Dan W and Josh held the back line stronger than a
Mexican border. Tom H, Dan L and Dan S were supporting and
providing service through mid-field, leaving Sam B, Martin, Alex
and Michael on the wings and Joe S as Centre-Forward.
The Lions triangular passing style of play uneased the Panthers
and enabled Joe S to fire in the visitors opening salvo, inside ten
minutes. The Panthers usual long high passes then came into
play, which the Lions defended superbly. Goal stopper Oliver
was again on top form deflecting and catching many shots.
The Lions communication was superb, with skipper Edward fully
controlling the back line and ensuring options were available
when a ball was cleared. The Lions maintained the pressure on
the Panthers. Tom H’s strike clanged off the right post, with Sam
B and Alex firing across many assists from the wings.
Martin had his goal bound shot blocked, from Alex’s silky pass.
Hatfield Peverel knew they had to score; and equalised from a
long, high range strike that arched under the crossbar beyond
Oliver’s reach. The Panthers netted their second from a goalbox
scramble, following a corner kick.
Despite beginning the second half 2-1 down, the Lions knuckled
down and took the game to Hatfield.
Dan W had his shot saved from another Alex cross. The Panthers
continued to hit high passing shots. Michael, Tom H and Dan S
were weaving well with Joe S but found themselves stifled
before launching a venomous master strike. Then in a freak
right wing shot, Hatfield found the inside of the Lion’s net,
extending their lead to 3-1.
The Lions then introduced a little ‘reverse psychology’ and began
to play the Panthers at their own style of play. This appeared to
effectively unnerve their hosts. In a wonderful set piece, Joe S
walloped in the Lions second goal, bringing the score to 3-2 with
eleven minutes of play remaining. Dan S then fired, rebounded
off the goalie to Dan W, who ran out of space and the ball
crashed into the side netting.
The Lions then ramped up the pressure. Joe S’ screeching
firecracker left the Panthers’ goalie standing and landed his
team a hard earned 3-3 draw at full time.
This was a well-deserved point for the Lions and a typical display
of their ‘never give up’ attitude.
Next Sunday, the Lions are at Compass Gardens against Dunmow
United Pythons, in their next League fixture.
The U16 Lions today were: Josh B, Sam B, Callum C, Alex G,
Tom H, Dan L, Morgan L, Edward M, Martin N, James O, Oliver R,
Dan S, Joe S, Michael T and Dan W.
Thanks to Paul for running the line and providing the pre-match
warm-up. SWFU U16 Lions are proud to be sponsored by
‘Chelmsford Audi’.
THREE RIVERS
JOHN DAY TROPHY
A very well done to the three rivers John day trophy team. A very
well deserved win today. The first time won in many many years.
Very well done to all who played and very well deserved. Proud
of you all.
THE SWFC U16 LIONS BEGAN THEIR
2018/19 SEASON IN WINNING STYLE
SWFU FC U16 LIONS 3 – 0 WRITTLE MINORS FC U16 GREENS.
Blackwater and Dengie League U16 Division Two match.
The last time the Lions and Greens met, was in last season’s
‘League Cup Final’; where the Lions fought back from an early
Writtle lead, to win the Cup 2-1. Both teams had been promoted
to Division Two in the ‘U16 Blackwater and Dengie League’ and
were eager to lift the three points available today.
The Lions had been working hard on maintaining their fitness
levels in the closed season, while the SWFU Committee and
Chelmsford City Council, had worked tirelessly to nurture the
pitches at Compass Gardens.
High energy was maintained from the opening minutes. The
Lions finally broke the deadlock when a long-range clearance
from Dan W found Joe S, who sprinted past Writtle’s last
defender and fired the ball into the net.
The Lion’s defensive wall remained strong, with mid-field
spreading the play across the whole pitch. Joe S extended the
home side’s lead, following a skillful assist from Alex G.
Writtle threatened a comeback in the final twenty minutes,
however Dan S’ goal sealed the game and the points.
A good debut match, in what will be a challenging campaign for
the Lions.
Next Sunday, the Lions travel to Hatfield Peverel Panthers.
The U16 Lions today were: Sam B, Will C, James D, Tom H,
Morgan L, James O, Sam P, Oliver R, Dan S, Joe S, Michael T and
Dan W.
SWFU U16 Lions are proud to be sponsored by ‘Chelmsford Audi’
