Today’s Fashion By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / 60s to 60 The other day I was in a restaurant when I noticed how everyone was dressed. When you’re sitting in a bar area, you see all. Nobody looks fresh! There is no such thing anymore and I am longing for the fashion police to turn the tables on us and make men shave, get the crap out of their hair, and look like men again. As for the women, I guess they save money because those old, torn jeans are the rage. Attach some rhinestones, add a little lace and you’re today’s fashion statement. Just look at the ads in Town & Country to see tattered jeans with a $3,000 handbag. I think it also has something to do with where the rips and tears are to determine if the jeans are old or cost another $800. Tattoos, once reserved for bad boys are a badge of honor for some. The more you have, the more your status goes up. Women are on the list too. I understand a permanent mark to remember something or someone, a lost love, a cause or symbol of your faith. I don’t understand skulls and all the weapons art burned into someone’s skin forever. And the unshaven look for men has gone just a little over the top in my opinion. It’s one thing to grow a beard and keep it trimmed in an orderly fashion. It’s quite another to look like you just woke up from a 3-day drunk. I think of myself as progressive and am constantly aware that each generation has its own fashion statement and stamp of authenticity. After all, miniskirts, teased hair, clog shoes and Cleopatra eyes were my look at one time. I can only imagine what everyone thought of us back then. Looking at the old photos, we really did look ridiculous. I even have one of me with giant hair, false eyelashes and a stupid bow right in the middle of that hair. I must have thought I was foxy enough to have my picture taken. There I was with a smug little smile looking all sassy. What I find amusing is that as fashions change, so does my perception of them. I was so influenced by magazines that I never developed my own style. Aside from parting my hair on the left for my whole life, everything else was according to the look of the time. Now I guess I should get my old clothes, slightly shred them, attach a bunch of junk and get with the program. I can’t change the part in my hair because it’s the only way I remember right from left.
