Albemarle Chorale’s 2018 Christmas Concerts Announced
By Amelia Reiheld 252-339-0287 areiheld@yahoo.com
Hark and Rejoice! That message is the one the Albemarle
Chorale will present to its holiday audiences.
Listen! Pay attention. Hear the joyous news!
Those words are repeated over and over in the 2018
Christmas chorale concerts, to be held on successive
Sunday afternoons, on December 2, at Edenton United
Methodist Church, and on December 9th, at the First
United Methodist Church, in Elizabeth City. Both concerts
begin at 4 pm.
The rousing opening work offers a bit of a twist on a
traditional favorite, Hark the Herald Angels Sing. “Angels
are coming with wonderful news. Not only do we need to
listen, but to respond,” explains the Chorale’s music director,
Lynwood Winslow. “Everything else is someone’s
response. “
Johann Sebastian Bach’s glorious choral masterpiece,
“Magnificat,” which is the program’s major work, is a
recounting, in Latin, of Mary’s response to stunning news.
An angel told the young woman that she would become
the mother of God’s own son. According to Bach, Mary
listened, and responded in wonderment and joy.
There will be a small chamber orchestra accompanying
the Magnificat, in which the chorale’s own superb soloists
will be featured. Michael Morgan will, of course, accompany
the choral group on organ and piano.
The second half of the program features our own responses
to the holy day with Winslow’s selection of
shorter and more familiar Christmas works, some deeply
spiritual, and some just for the joy of it. Angels From The
Realms of Glory bring the best of news into a world torn
What is more magical than a used book store? It’s a
treasure hunt. You may walk in looking for that one
book, but (just like life) if you keep your eyes and heart
open, you may find so much more.
Please allow me to introduce The Garden of Readin’,
in lovely downtown Edenton, NC. We’re located at 103
East King Street, a sunny side street just off Broad Street
near the waterfront. Our goal is to be a resource for our
community as well as its visitors. With a cozy, sunny
seating area, the shop is a great place to browse a wide
selection of books, then settle in with a perfect cup of
freshly-brewed coffee or tea.
Our specialties are books and tea. A wide selection
of carefully-selected used books in excellent condition
fills four rooms. Categories include popular and literary
fiction, classics, poetry, science fiction and fantasy,
asunder. A beloved medieval poem responds with the
symbolism of a miraculous rose brightening the darkest
of seasons, In The Bleak Midwinter is warmed by a
gift of love. Finally, Chorale members hope to have an
excuse to join the audience in singing one of their favorite
encores. Hallelujah!
Rehearsals for the Chorale’s spring season will begin on
January 7, 2019 at 7 pm, at Edenton United Methodist
Church on Virginia Road. The spring program will be a
secular one this year, possibly Broadway show tunes.
New members who have choral experience are welcome
to join the no-auditions group. “It’s a perfect opportunity to
get your feet wet,” encourages Winslow, with his engaging
grin “I’m not entirely sure of the program yet, but put it
on your calendar. It’ll be fun. Really!”
Free Mass- market paperback with
any purchase.
children’s and young adult literature, cookbooks, science
and medicine, inspiration, self-help, biography, history,
and NC authors. Our inventory is updated frequently,
and we provide store credit in exchange for your tradeins!
Using purified water at the perfect temperature and a
French press, we brew a special coffee blend, freshly-roasted
from Kill Devil Coffee, and a wide variety of
organic, loose-leaf fair-trade Rishi teas. From our menu
of 21 teas, favorites include Jade Cloud, Raspberry
Green Tea, Peach Blossom white tea, Turmeric Ginger,
and Masala Chai (perfect for fall!).
We invite you to visit The Garden of Readin’ and find
your next favorite book or a great gift for a loved one.
Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and take some home. We
hope to see you soon!
