Health and Nutrition Strategies For
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else

WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?
Over the years, I’ve provided my perspective as
a food safety specialist, and 13 year prostate
cancer survivor. In 2005, I was diagnosed and treated
surgically for a very aggressive prostate cancer. After
surgery and the eventual,recurrence , I sought reasons.
I selected an oncologist team that operated
under the theory that prostate cancer is dietary linked.
I accepted their theory. I participated in a clinical trial
studying capsulized pulverized muscadine grape skin.
It controlled my cancer for over two years. Muscadine
grapes peaked my interest, because it’s indigenous to
the Northeast North Carolina region. What an amazing
paradox. Northeast North Carolina has higher cancer
rates, than anywhere else in the country, maybe the
world. We have a native fruit that can control cancer.
I’m a witness.
That segues into my clean food advocacy. As a
former food regulator I always look at press releases
about food trends in the industry. The cancer lawsuit in
California regarding the herbicide glyphosate (Roundup)
is very troubling. The courts found for the claimant,
who claimed that Monsanto had spent decades hiding
the cancer-causing danger of it’s Roundup herbicides.
Way back in 1996, Dennis Vacco, the Attorney General
of New York, ordered Monsanto to pull adds that said
Roundup was “safer than table salt”and “practically
nontoxic to mammals,birds, and fish”. What the hell
does practically nontoxic mean anyway? Monsanto
withdrew the adds, but said that the phase was permitted
under EPA guidelines. I’ve got to check that out.
Herbicides are measured by residue levels. Glyphosate
levels were raised by the EPA 2013. That smells like
industry lobby influence to me.

resolved by the spring growing season. I’m getting a
lot of feedback on the prospect of mini organic farms
(2 acres) , and the enthusiasm of young agriculture
entrepreneurs, realizing that organic produce could
result in sustainable commodity enterprises, that could
generate substantial wealth for the area. Here’s an
example: New York City’s Park Slope Farmers Market,
one of the largest in the US. Identifies a radius of 500
miles as local.
In the last sheet I looked at, they advertised, organic
persian cucumbers at $5.16 per pound. I’m partial to
cucumbers because they’re easier to handle than most
produce, and you can get a 20,000 pound yield. 2 or
3 times a year, from as little as two acres of land. You
can do the math. More on this next month.
Finally. A shout out to the Ball Road Striders ( Sarah,
Garla, Jackie, and Vera) these ladies do an early
morning 2-3 mile walk, 2 to 3 times a week. Very impressive,
I’m so proud.
Recalls: The big one this was Ruiz Food Products
(Est. 17523A, P17523A) voluntarily recalled almost
2,500,000 lbs of beef and pork products due to salmonella
and listeria.
Envolve Foods (distributes through Kroger) voluntarily
recalled almost 300,000 lbs of chicken and pork products
for salmonella and listeria.
Bakkavor Foods (distributes through Harris-Teeter)
recalled almost 800,000 Lbs of meat and poultry
products.
