DCAC Invites Local Groups to Share Events on OBX Veterans Week Directory
For the sixth consecutive year, Dare County Arts Council
and The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau are joining forces to
many ways that the Outer Banks supports its veterans, both
FRISCO MUSEUM EXPANDING EXHIBITS by: Joyce Bornfriend
Exhibits in the Natural History Center at the Frisco Native
American Museum showcase ways Native Americans
lived in harmony with the natural environment for thousands
of years. Recent renovations have enabled staff to begin
plans for a long-held dream to redesign the pavilion located
on the nature trail as the Natural History Center. The
spacious building overlooks a beautiful pond, and currently
doubles as a space for workshops and meetings. Several
murals will be moved from the museum to the pavilion and
others will be taken out of storage. The space used for the
Natural History Center has been transformed into an exhibit
on the original inhabitants of Hatteras Island and includes a
long house.
Carl Bornfriend, Executive Director for the museum noted
that “every museum has items that they would like to display
if they had more space. That has been the case for our
Natural History Center, and we are delighted at the prospect
of expanding the exhibits on such a crucial area. We live
in a time when there are great climate changes, and each
of us has a responsibility to do our part in keeping a natural
balance.”
Located in a complex eco system, the Pavilion offers the
perfect space for environmental studies. Egrets, Blue Heron
and other shore birds nest in the nearby marsh, and marine
life fills the large pond and curving waterway that leads to the
sound. Paths through the evergreen woods include information
markers and benches are located in small clearings that
make a perfect backdrop for small group discussions.
Work on the new exhibits will begin in November, and
volunteers are welcome. The museum, which is located on
Hatteras Island, is open Tuesday through Sunday. For more
information, visit the web site at www.nativeamericanmuseum.org
or call 252-995-4440.
