Layden’s Supermarket<br />

ayden’s Supermarket has been family<br />
owned since 1952. The family has been<br />
in the butcher business for 73 years. The<br />
store was built in 1860 by a Quaker builder,<br />
Josiah Nicholson and Charles Layden<br />
bought it in 1952. He moved his butcher<br />
shop, which was across the street and<br />
added the supermarket later. People travel<br />
from all over for their sage sausage and<br />
braided sausage. They say it reminds them<br />
of the childhood. Charlie Layden says they<br />
have been using the same recipe for the<br />
sage sausage for generations. When you<br />
walk into the country store you can’t help<br />
but smell the old fashioned smoked meats.<br />
In fact they smoke their meats in the same<br />
smokehouse they used in the 50’s. They<br />
carry local produce, smoked meats, hand<br />
cut steaks, beef, local pork, local chicken,<br />
cheese, some groceries, and hardware.<br />
They have monthly meat packages available<br />
at great prices. They are only 25 minutes<br />
from Elizabeth City, NC. Take a peaceful<br />
country drive to Belvidere and be greeted by<br />
Doug when you walk into Layden’s and try<br />
their well known fresh sausage.<br />
