Memorial Day Tribute to the Albemarle’s Great War Fallen
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – This Veterans Day, the Museum of the Albemarle,
together with the Elizabeth City Boys & Girls Club, will mark the Centennial
of the First World War with a FINAL special tribute to the fallen.
The members of the Boys & Girls Club helped museum staff paint 106
wooden crosses, one for each man from the Albemarle who died during the
conflict in WWI. Inscribed on each cross is the man’s name, native county,
and date of death.
North Carolina lost 2,375 people in the First World War. Behind each name
is a father, a mother, a sibling—that forever lost a piece of themselves.
Some have their names recorded in family grave plots, military cemeteries,
or on courthouses memorials. Some have no physical sign whatsoever that
they even existed.
Each of the crosses follow the dimensions and form of the stone markers
used in American military cemeteries overseas, such as the Meuse-Argonne
American Cemetery that contains the dead from the final American
offensive.
May these crosses serve as a vivid reminder of the bloody cost of war.
