November is here, there is a chill in the air down in Hatteras, and
the King Mackerel bite should be warming up. I always look
forward to heading south this time of year to target this fishery. There
are many different ways to target King Mackerel successfully. The
first way and most successful technique is live baiting. However’ you
must catch your own bait with a cast net and that can be problematic
in two ways. One--can you throw a cast net? Two-- being able to
locate schools of Menhaden to throw at on the way out to the fishing
grounds.
For Kings, I use a simple two hook wire rig. I like to use American
Fishing Wire 40 lb. sevenstrand wire tied with a figure 8 knot to a
pair of #4 4x Eagle Claw bronze trebles or #4 4x VMC permasteel
trebles. At the top of the rig, I tie on a Spro 75 lb. swivel. I also use a
10-15 foot shot of 25 lb. test Seaguar fluorocarbon tied with a double
nail knot to my main line of 15-20 lb. test Sufix Superior monofilament.
For a rod and reel, I like using a live bait style rod with a light
tip rated for 15-30 lb. line. For the reel, I prefer using a Daiwa Slosh
30 conventional reel.
by Jake Worthington
The second way you can target the Kings are with spoons. In the
event live bait is hard to come by or you find yourself in an area of
kings you did not expect to find, you can easily catch them on artificials.
I like to run Bowed Up King Spoons in a variety of colors. White
with silver tape is always a good starter until you find a hot color. For
these, I run one on a #3 and another on a #5 planer which works
well on a center console boat. Between the planer and spoon, I’ll run
20-30 ft. of 80 lb. pound test clear Billfisher leader material with a
200 lb. ball bearing swivel attached to the planer. My rods for planers
are Penn Senator 6/0s on a 50-100 lb. class trolling rod loaded full of
65 lb Power Pro. In conjunction with the spoon rods, I’ll run 2-4 strip
baits up in my riggers on red and white or Mylar sea witches pulled
on Shimano TLD 25s. I like to use false albacore strips, but any shiny
oily fish strip will suffice.
The final way you can target King Mackerels is what I call the last
resort method, and that is Dead Sticking. This is where you drift or
powerdrift along good water with dead ballyhoos on weighted king
rigs. It’s the same rig as your live bait rig with the exception that your
lead treble is replaced with a 1-3 oz Strike Zone Fishing dead bait
jig head. This is also a great tactic to use if you run out of live bait on
a hot bite or need to use something to slide up in your riggers while
pulling spoons.
Hopefully, one of these suggestions will help you have a successful
Mackerel fishing trip this fall.
November!! What a wonderful month of the year! The
colors are changing on all the leaves, there is a cool
crispness in the air, and arts and craft fairs abound! It is
time to get your ‘“Art” on. It is one of the favorite times
of the year to be an artist and craftsman. There are a
plethora of craft shows and bazaars around the area. If
you have the opportunity to enter one of these and sell
your art, you should get involved! You can also be a consumer
of some of the interesting arts or crafts that will be
on display. If nothing else the opportunity to get some
great ideas for yourself abounds at these shows! If the
chance arises please take the time to support our local
artists and craftsmen at the myriad of fairs and shows in
our area.
It is also the time to start considering what supplies
you will need to enhance your fall and winter seasonal
paintings. Perhaps you need to pick up some cooler
colors for your palettes. Get that new bottle of gesso that
will be needed to help wash the colors in the paleness
of winter scenes. It may also be time to lay in a supply of
blank cards to enable you to paint those special greeting
, Christmas, or other holiday cards. You will have hours
of fun making your own greeting cards. It is relaxing and
illuminating. It becomes an act of putting something of
yourself into a card especially painted for someone near
and dear to you. If you have never done this before, I
encourage you to get yourself a kit, (usually you have to
go on-line or to an art store), break out your paints and
have fun!!There is nothing quite like those cards painted
from the heart to give to the special ones in your life.
All art is not done with a paint and a brush. There are
a multitude of crafts that are created in the art world.
Perhaps you are one that prefers to make your art with
paper cuttings. Although you would need several types
of special scissors to do this. The results are amazing.
Google paper cutting and you may see a whole new
world of art open up to you! Some art is done with needle
and thread, some with just thread. Examine these
opportunities. Try them out, they are amazingly therapeutic
and relaxing.
This is the time of year for you to go outside and let
nature provide a host of subjects for your art. Look
carefully around you and examine the leaves, the bark
of trees, the area around you. Perhaps you will seea
rock that you simply must paint a picture on. Perhaps an
old barn that you must paint on canvas. One just never
knows what will inspire you or what medium of art the
inspiration will lead you to try. One thing is certain, if
you don’t get outside and look, you will not accomplish
anything.
On my recovery, I am glad to be back after all my
surgery. I appreciate all the prayers that came my way
and I thank God for healing me and providing me with
the great doctors that performed the operations. I have
missed a couple of months and I have missed writing, It
is great to be back!
Don’t forget the First Friday Art Walk in Elizabeth City.
Also, check out the art classes offered in and around
your county.
