Pets to the Rescue Here are some interesting facts about animals: • Most people think of pets as being a cat or dog, something you can hold and pet or take for a walk. But aquarium fi sh can be benefi cial, too. Studies have shown that watching fi sh can lower blood pressure, calm hyperactive children, and reduce general stress levels. • In addition to their use in therapeutic settings, animals can be trained to perform many kinds of services for people with disabilities. These are called service animals, and they form close bonds with their owners, preventing loneliness and promoting a sense of independence for many disabled people. Warm-Up You may start the lesson in one of these ways: • Ask students to look at the picture on page 69. How is the woman in the picture feeling? Why do they think the dog has this effect on her? Have students form small groups and brainstorm a list of all the reasons they think people enjoy having pets. Ask each group to share items from their list and write them on the board. CD 1 Track 6 6Chapter • Faith, tradition, and economics infl uence how people in different cultures view pets. Ask students to share what different kinds of pets are accepted in their culture and what role they play in family life. • Have a pet fair. Students can bring in pictures of their pets, or of a pet they would like to have, and post them around the room for others to look at. Have each student talk briefl y about their pet. Reading Have students make two columns on their paper, one titled “Hospitals and Nursing Homes” and the other “In the Home.” As students read the passage, have them note examples of health benefi ts of therapy animals in hospitals and nursing homes, and health and well-being benefi ts of pets in the home on their paper. Have students compare this list with the one the class brainstormed in the warm-up activity. Alternative Reading Activity Ask more advanced students to read the passage only once and not look back as they answer the follow-up questions.
