WHEN CHURCHILL CAME TO TEA<br />

efore the war I was living in a small village in Kent. We played in the streets,<br />

being free of traffic most of the time except for a big Humber saloon car which<br />

came through the village quite often. It contained a couple of large men, one of<br />

whom always smiled and waved at us. He usually had a long cigar in his hand. My dad<br />

who was the village policeman, told me that it was Mr Winston Churchill who lived not far<br />

away in a house named "Chartwell".<br />

Dad rejoined the army at the outbreak of war. He had previously served for a few years<br />

in "The Royal West Surreys" and spent five years in Hong Kong. I followed the progress<br />

of the war on a world map which was pinned to my bedroom wall and I kept a diary of<br />

where we though dad to be, keeping in mind that censorship denied us knowing his<br />

exact whereabouts. The papers gave us news of Mr Churchill throughout the war. His<br />

speeches were always rousing and we tried to hear them on the wireless.<br />

Dad came home late in 1945 and resumed as the village policeman. He didn't have<br />

much to say about his experiences while in the army but it was with a sense of pride that<br />

mum sewed the bright medal ribbons on his uniform. I had to look one up in a book; it<br />

was the Military Medal. I wondered what you had to do to get one. I was now 17 and<br />

awaiting my own "Call Up".<br />
