WHEN CHURCHILL CAME TO TEA

efore the war I was living in a small village in Kent. We played in the streets,
being free of traffic most of the time except for a big Humber saloon car which
came through the village quite often. It contained a couple of large men, one of
whom always smiled and waved at us. He usually had a long cigar in his hand. My dad
who was the village policeman, told me that it was Mr Winston Churchill who lived not far
away in a house named "Chartwell".
Dad rejoined the army at the outbreak of war. He had previously served for a few years
in "The Royal West Surreys" and spent five years in Hong Kong. I followed the progress
of the war on a world map which was pinned to my bedroom wall and I kept a diary of
where we though dad to be, keeping in mind that censorship denied us knowing his
exact whereabouts. The papers gave us news of Mr Churchill throughout the war. His
speeches were always rousing and we tried to hear them on the wireless.
Dad came home late in 1945 and resumed as the village policeman. He didn't have
much to say about his experiences while in the army but it was with a sense of pride that
mum sewed the bright medal ribbons on his uniform. I had to look one up in a book; it
was the Military Medal. I wondered what you had to do to get one. I was now 17 and
awaiting my own "Call Up".
