The Westfield Parish Council Newsletter<br />

Compiled by the clerk to the Council, Kate Darbyshire. A brief<br />

summary of Council business conducted since August and<br />

Bulb Planting<br />

October saw a round of bulb planting. Six<br />

hundred native bulbs were bought by the<br />

Council, including snowdrops, snake’s<br />

head fritillary, wild daffodils and tulips.<br />

The Horticultural Society kindly planted<br />

some around the fingerpost and the Tree<br />

Conservation Volunteers (TCV), headed<br />

up by Cllr Tim Hills, planted the rest at the<br />

top of Workhouse Lane, bottom of Cottage<br />

Lane, Churchfield and opposite Church Place Farm on Westfield Lane.<br />

They also managed to clear the brambles and overgrowth around four of the<br />

‘Westfield’ signs coming into the village.<br />

Poppy Making Workshops<br />

This year to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War I, the Parish<br />

Council organised a display of poppies throughout the village inviting residents<br />

and community groups to get involved. In September we held a Community<br />

Poppy Making workshop in the Bowls Club. Many thanks to the Bowls Club for<br />

hosting us and thank you to all the volunteers who came along on the day. We<br />

had a good mix of ages and a very productive afternoon of painting, sewing,<br />

knitting, crocheting, gluing, tea drinking and cake eating!<br />

I was invited by the Head Teacher of Westfield Primary School to go into the<br />

school and run workshops with each of the classes. I started each class with a<br />

discussion about the symbolism of the poppy and why it is important to<br />

remember World War I. The children were very enthusiastic about the project<br />

and worked hard, persevering with some tricky tasks. Their creations are<br />

wonderful and a very welcome addition to the display.<br />

Poppy Display<br />

At the end of October we put out all the poppies that people had kindly made.<br />

We had previously applied for a grant of ‘There But <strong>No</strong>t There Silhouettes’ from<br />

The Armistice Covenant Fund. These were placed in various positions within<br />

the parish. Toby Walsh and his team of volunteers once again did a wonderful<br />

job of getting the war memorial ready for Remembrance Day and also placed a<br />

silhouette by the memorial. Lots of hard work went into the display and there is<br />

a long list of people to thank including: The Women’s Institute, Horticultural<br />

Society, Playgroup, Youth Club, Cubs, Beavers, Scouts, Brownies, Guides and<br />

Woodbase. Thank you to everyone who made poppies, contributed materials,<br />

helped with setting up and the team at the New Inn for being a drop off point!<br />
