Westfield Cricket Club Winter Update (2018)
League Matches: The 2018 season was, as predicted, a challenging one for both league
teams. The 1st X1, playing a higher grade of cricket due to last season’s success, finished
5th - there were only 18 points between us and the third placed team which shows how
competitive this division was. The 2nd X1 were always going to find things difficult being
new to league cricket and a new adventure for WCC; they finished 6th in their division but
enjoyed the challenge and, unlike other teams in their division, fulfilled all of their fixtures.
Well done to both teams for playing some good cricket and promoting Westfield.
Personnel: The Colts who played for the adult teams have developed their skills and
have made a big contribution to the 2nd X1 so well done to all of them, I am sure they will
continue to develop to become the nucleus of future WCC teams.
We are reviewing our Colts programme for 2019 as this season’s evening sessions have
been disappointing because of fewer numbers than last year, if you know any young
people who would be interested in joining this group then please contact one of the names
below or any other committee member.
Sunday Cricket: The newly named Westfield/Sedlescombe Sunday Friendly X1 team is
settling down; it is hoped that this will develop alongside our other teams.
Indoor Cricket: Another exciting development for WCC this year (there have been so
many of them!) we have entered a team in the Eastern Area Cricket Association (EACA)
indoor winter league which is played at Horntye. The first game was a steep learning
curve and we came second however the learning paid off and we won that game so well
done to Patrick and his team.
Social: We had the pleasure of hosting Westfield Youth Club in June, July, August and
their annual Fun Day on 2nd Sept which was another day of fun for all who attended.
Our annual awards and dinner took place on Saturday 20 October at The New Inn, as
ever it was a good evening with thanks to Patrick and his excellent staff for hosting the
event. The award winners were :-
1st X1 - most runs Peter Baker, best batting average Darren Corke
most wickets Graham Corke, best bowling average Nathan Burgess
most catches Peter Baker, player’s player Steve Cornford
2nd X1 - most runs Steve Barker, best batting average Rory Hunt
most wickets Stewart Fellows, best bowling average Rory Hunt
most catches Jason Miller, player’s player Patrick Edwards
Friendly Matches - most runs Peter Baker, most wickets Steve Cornford
Clubman of the Year - a joint award to Patrick Edwards and Ian Taylor
Bouquet Presentation - to Angie Taylor for scoring at all 1st X1 games plus friendlies,
some 2nd X1 games plus providing cakes for every home game.
Pavilion: The tendering process to build the new pavilion has been finalised with Parker
& Son selected as the main contractor; grant applications are under way to fund this
important and exciting development so please watch out for updates - if you have money
burning a hole in your pockets or purses then all contributions will be gratefully accepted.
Ground: Work is under way to expand the outfield, unfortunately this has meant the
felling of some trees so that we can level off the ground and grass it over. Once the new
pavilion is built the old pavilion will be taken down and the ground incorporated in to the
expanded outfield with additional trees planted to complete the line of trees. This
development is necessary to allow the club to play at a higher level in coming years and it
is hoped that we will be able to attract more touring teams.
