882 FOCUS.qxp_Layout 1 11/12/2018 10:40 Page 7 0 South Woodham Focus South Woodham Focus 7 Millwood Womens Insititute Our November meeting was an Open Evening and it was lovely to see so many new faces. We were entertained by Bryan Thurlow as ‘The Perennial Mr Potter’. We learnt that Mr Potter was born in 1900 and grew up in Suffolk. Mr Potter talked about his childhood. One of his earliest memories was being chosen with his brother Bertie who was two years older to go to London to watch the wedding of George V who was then The Duke of York. Mr Potter was quite a sickly child but he loved the outdoors and gardening. He admired the Knott garden at Glebe House. In 1911 Mrs Tindell decided to have a Flower Show for the village and he thought he would like to enter the show by creating a miniature knot garden on a plate. Mrs Tindell was very impressed with his entry and he won silver threepennybit. At age 13 he left school and was lucky enough to get a job helping the gardener at Glebe House. He loved the work and found he was quite good at growing flowers especially carnations, sweet peas and lavender. He also managed to grow strawberries by putting them in the green house over winter and when The Bishop of Norwich came to visit at Glebe House in April they were able to serve the strawberries that he had grown. The Gardener was gradually getting slower and slower and Mr Potter was doing most of the work himself so when the gardener sadly died Mr Potter was offered the job of gardener. Bertie had come back from the war after four year and was suffering from shell shock but he was also able to help out in the garden. He met his true love Rose, they got engaged and after they were married they moved into The Bothey which overlooked the knott garden and Rose was able to work in Glebe House. They lived there for several years and when Miss Violet died the house and grounds were sold and eventually new houses were built in the grounds. They were able to stay at The Bothey and he was able to tend to his beloved knot Garden. It was such a lovely story and Mr Potter was so expressive that we could almost smell the flowers and taste the strawberries. After his talk and the vote of thanks he answered our questions and then we were able to buy some beautiful miniature roses he was selling. It was then time for tea and homemade cakes. Milllwood WI participated in the SWF Christmas Fayre with a homemade cake stall and a raffle for two Christmas hampers plus a lucky dip for the children which all proved very popular. Forth Coming Events Instead of our usual post Christmas Dinner we are looking forward to having a Post Christmas lunch on 31st January at Three Rivers On February 21st we have a theatre trip to see a matinee performance of ‘The Girl on the Train' at The Palace Theatre Our next meeting is on Wednesday 19th December at Champions Manor Hall 7.30pm for a 7.45pm start. Our speaker is Peter Jones with a talk titled ‘How I met Kylie Minogue. This is our Christmas Party so after our buffet we will be having Secret Santa. New members are always welcome.
