Shoulder pain is a common
problem treated by
Osteopaths. There are many
reasons why shoulder problems
may develope, some last for
days others can persist for
WOODHAM OSTEOPATHS
years. The causes of shoulder
pain can be due to inflammation in the shoulder joint as well as damage
to tendons, muscles or ligaments. Depending on the nature of the
damage, we will be able to treat you after examination or provide
guidance on seeking alternative treatment if the condition warrants it.
One of the most common types shoulder condition is injury to the rotator
cuff. The cuff is the name given to the group of muscles and their
respective tendons that surround the head of your shoulder joint. In
between the rotator cuff tendons and the tip of your shoulder (the
acromium) is the subacromial bursa (a lubricating sack) This bursa helps
to protect the tendons from touching the bone and provide a smooth
surface for the tendons to glide over. Damage to these tendons
(tendonitis) or the bursa (bursitis) often leads to a condition know as an
impingement syndrome. An impingement syndrome, this is where there
is insufficient space under the acromium to allow for free movement
tendons. Although some people have anatomical predispositions to this
condition repetitive over head movements are often key to their onset.
Osteopathic treatment can be very successful in easing the symptoms
associated with this condition and to aid a speedy recovery. We will also
guide you through rehabilitation excise and assess your posture to help
minimise chances of reoccurrence.
If you have any shoulder pains book to see me at my clinic within Club
CHRISTMAS PARKING IN
CHELMSFORD
Chelmsford City Council is advising shoppers on the best places
to park to save money and beat the Christmas crowds this
Christmas.
We all know that as soon as December comes around, more
people will be visiting the City centre to shop for Christmas,
meaning that traffic around the City centre can be more
congested as usual.
With the main City centre multi-storey and surface car parks such
as High Chelmer, Meadows Retail and John Lewis’ Bond Street
being popular car parks amongst visitors for their convenient
locations, why not try alternative car parks in the City centre?
For excellent value weekend parking, Townfield Street (next to
the railway station) is perfect for shopping, offering unique
restaurants and boutiques and is only a couple of minutes’ walk
from the High Street. Townfield Street is only £1.50 per day on
weekends.
In addition, Fairfield Road car park (located next to Chelmsford
Theatres) is a short 10-minute walk from the High Street and
High Chelmer Shopping centre and is priced at £2 a day over the
weekend.
There is also the ‘Park and Ride’ service based in both Sandon
and Chelmer Valley. You can park your car and catch frequent
buses to the City centre, with weekday adult daily tickets costing
£3.60 and £1.50 on Saturdays. The Sandon site will also be
running a frequent Sunday service on the 9, 16 and 23 December.
For more information on car parking around Chelmsford, visit
www.chelmsford.gov.uk/parking. For more information on ‘Park
and Ride’, visit www.essex.gov.uk/parkandride.
Our November meeting was an Open Evening and it was lovely to see so many new
faces. We were entertained by Bryan Thurlow as ‘The Perennial Mr Potter’. We
learnt that Mr Potter was born in 1900 and grew up in Suffolk. Mr Potter talked
about his childhood. One of his earliest memories was being chosen with his
brother Bertie who was two years older to go to London to watch the wedding of
George V who was then The Duke of York. Mr Potter was quite a sickly child but
he loved the outdoors and gardening. He admired the Knott garden at Glebe
House. In 1911 Mrs Tindell decided to have a Flower Show for the village and he
thought he would like to enter the show by creating a miniature knot garden on
a plate. Mrs Tindell was very impressed with his entry and he won silver
threepennybit.
At age 13 he left school and was lucky enough to get a job helping the gardener
at Glebe House. He loved the work and found he was quite good at growing
flowers especially carnations, sweet peas and lavender. He also managed to grow
strawberries by putting them in the green house over winter and when The Bishop
of Norwich came to visit at Glebe House in April they were able to serve the
strawberries that he had grown.
The Gardener was gradually getting slower and slower and Mr Potter was doing most of the work himself so when the
gardener sadly died Mr Potter was offered the job of gardener. Bertie had come back from the war after four year and was
suffering from shell shock but he was also able to help out in the garden.
He met his true love Rose, they got engaged and after they were married they moved into The Bothey which overlooked the
knott garden and Rose was able to work in Glebe House. They lived there for several years and when Miss Violet died the house
and grounds were sold and eventually new houses were built in the grounds.
They were able to stay at The Bothey and he was able to tend
to his beloved knot Garden. It was such a lovely story and Mr
Potter was so expressive that we could almost smell the
flowers and taste the strawberries.
After his talk and the vote of thanks he answered our
questions and then we were able to buy some beautiful
miniature roses he was selling. It was then time for tea and
homemade cakes.
Milllwood WI participated in the SWF Christmas Fayre with a
homemade cake stall and a raffle for two Christmas hampers
plus a lucky dip for the children which all proved very popular.
Forth Coming Events
KEEPING SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS HEALTHY
Your help is needed to monitor and influence the rapid changes that are taking place in an increasingly digital world.
If you’re web literate, enjoy social media and have a few hours in the month to spare WE NEED YOU.
If you’re passionate about obtaining the best NHS Service for our Town and have a little time to spare, WE ALSO NEED YOU.
2019 will bring more health & social care needs for SWF people. Key matters will include: the Town’s new health hub; the impact of
Universal Credit; increasing mental health issues; changes to community care; increasing need for residential care; and changes to
acute hospital services.
Historically SWF has played an active role in the involvement of patients and public with health & social care. The Patient Participation
Groups and the SWF Health & Social Care Group now work closely together to cover all aspects of health & social care for everyone.
A small number of volunteers do all this, supported by an administrator who receives a token honorarium.
The volunteers have been doing this for many years, are getting older and have other increasing calls on their time but will continue
with help. Our administrator has recently moved.
To keep this going we need ‘new blood’! Specifically:
• A few volunteers to help keep our involvement about health & social care going; and
• A new administrator, working with our officers, to:
• Promote & communicate what we do, know and find out
• Use our website, social media, e-communications and local media including Focus
• Use virtual methods
• Organise activities & events
Give an agreed small number of hours per week, for which we expect the token honorarium to continue.
Amongst others this might suit someone able to work flexible time at home, possibly studying a relevant subject or skills and maybe
with an interest in health & social care.
If interested in helping please contact SWF Health & Social Care Group on swfhealthsocial@outlook.com or voicemail 01245 322079.
Insider Secrets To Help You Relax And Enjoy The Perfect Christmas And New Year!
Kevin Barber Owner of Careclean, Carpet Cleaning Business has been established for over 34 years and will be writing
our featured monthly column on Cleaning providing tips and guidance to keeping your home clean and healthy.
Relatives Spilling Drinks!
If Uncle Tom accidentally spills his drink on to the carpet, as with any drink spill the last thing you want to do is say ‘OH Don’t worry
I’ll sort it out later’ just so you don’t make Uncle feel awful! If you do leave it till later it could be a problem to remove. Deal with it
there and then, grab some kitchen towel and absorb the spillage into the towel.
Always blot - don’t rub as rubbing could damage the fibres. You may need a detergent solution (a little water in bowl with just a few
drops of washing-up liquid in it) – apply to area with clean cloth and tamper in (pat with brush). Next with a little fresh water in a
hand sprayer, spray onto the area - just rinse and blot dry with kitchen towel.
Do You Find Chocolate Finger Prints?
Children of ‘all-ages’ love chocolate – and no Christmas would be the same without too much of it. Nevertheless, chocolate can be
tricky to get out – so try to use smaller sweets with individual wrappers on them – anything to stop hot fingers from becoming in
contact with the chocolate.
If you do find a chocolate stain scrape off a much as you can with a blunt knife. Use a detergent solution, starting at the outer edge
and tamper with a small brush (by raising it and letting it fall under it's own weight) and blotting dry. If the stain is still there repeat
then flush with fresh water and blot dry.
Christmas Dinner Still In The Carpet?
Christmas dinner is probably the biggest and most important
meal of the year. Often it’s shared with more friends and relatives
around the one table then you’ve seen all year – so there’s bound
to be a few little accidents.
Always carry food to the table on trays and if you have young
children try protecting the carpet under the table by laying
something over it first. Again a plastic sheet, or an off cut of
carpet will help to protect the carpet so you can enjoy the meal
– whatever the little darlings may throw.
Should something be trodden into the carpet then you will need
to scrape up the majority using something like a blunt knife, be
careful not to damage the pile by scrapping too hard. Use a
detergent solution to apply over area using a damp towel blot
the area until nothing more is transferred to the cloth.
Maldon District Council supporting great work being done by Abberton
Rural Training for Maldon residents
Maldon District Council through the livewell grant fund are supporting Abberton Rural Training (ART) for the 2019/20 period.
Abberton Rural Training is an educational organisation that delivers a set of programmes of practical and skills training to
residents of Essex and surrounding areas.
The courses have a focus on supporting those living in rural locations who
need help to access jobs, or further education and training, in the rural sector.
Currently ART are supporting 16 Maldon District residents through various
programmes and some of the skills that they have been learning and
applying are demonstrated below.
Not only are the sets of programmes giving residents practical and skills
training but it is supporting their health and wellbeing too. Many residents
are socially isolated and have not left their home for many years.
ART builds relationships and works with these individuals which significantly
benefits their health.
To find out more information about ART go to:
http://www.abbertonruraltraining.org/about.html
Cllr Bob Boyce MBE, Chairman of the Council’s Community Services Committee, said: “There is some fantastic work ongoing
between Maldon District residents and Abberton Rural Training. The residents are learning and being equipped with skills that
will not only increase their career prospects but will make a very positive impact on their health and wellbeing too.”
TWO PROSECUTED AFTER FLY-TIPS
Two people have been fined for offences under the
Environmental Protection Act 1990 after their household waste
was dumped on the roadside.
On 21 August, a report was received that Bobbie-Louise Sullivan,
of Kings Road, Chelmsford, had left a pile of household waste
including nappies and food waste in the street outside a
neighbour’s house. The case went to Colchester Magistrates
Court on Thursday 1 November 2018, where Ms Sullivan pleaded
not guilty to offences of fly-tipping and breaching a Section 108
requirement to attend the Council’s offices for interview. She
was found guilty and fined £480, plus a victim surcharge of £48,
court costs of £400 and £220 for failure to attend.
Earlier in the year during March, the Council received reports of
two fly-tips in Danbury: one in Spring Elms Lane and the other in
Backwarden Nature Reserve. Evidence was retrieved from both
fly-tips relating to Karen Vidler of Chaucer Road, Havering.
Ms Vidler stated in interview that she had passed her waste to
someone but could not remember who and could not account
for how the items became fly-tipped. On 8 November, Ms Vidler
was prosecuted for failing to uphold her duty of care. Pleading
guilty, she received a fine totalling £610.
In Chelmsford, any waste not placed into a black bin cannot be
collected by the Council. Councillor Malcolm Sismey, Cabinet
Member for Waste Management & Recycling, explains,
““Household recycling centres, registered waste carriers and
household collections all exist so that there is no need to
abandon our waste in places where it creates a nuisance for
others and a danger to wildlife. Irresponsible disposal of
household waste also comes at a cost to taxpayers – we spend
around £1.4 million each year clearing the streets of litter and
fly-tips.
"The black bin is only for non-recyclable waste and should easily
be enough for two weeks. If everyone left their rubbish outside
of the bin, it would attract wildlife who tear the bags open and
quickly become unpleasant for neighbours, which is why most
councils now discourage it.”
Councillor Susan Sullivan, Cabinet Member for Safer
Communities, says, "Chelmsford City Council always prosecutes
where we find evidence that someone has fly-tipped waste. If
you aren’t sure what to do with your rubbish, please call us for
advice – don’t fly-tip and don’t give it to an unlicensed carrier or
you could end up facing a fine.”
If you have an unusual amount of waste, for example after a
house move, you can take it to your nearest Recycling Centre for
Household Waste. If you need to hire a third party, ask them to
provide you with your full address and phone number, check that
they have a licence issued by the Environment Agency or Natural
Resources Wales, and always get a receipt to protect you if they
dump your waste illegally. You can check the Environment
Agency’s public register of all licensed waste carriers at
https://environment.data.gov.uk.
Over to
Proposed Medical Centre
Dear Editor,
We have heard a fair amount about the proposed medical centre
in the new Sainsbury supermarket complex. Apart from the
dubious wisdom of locating the entire medical services of a
moderately sized town in the premises of a commercial entity
who may just decide to "up-sticks", it occured to me that the
only possible benefit to the users of the services there would be
if the actual funds per patient, after operating costs, increased.
It's by no means clear that this will be the case, but even if it is,
how would this funding compare to the national average?
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
WOW what a year we have had!
I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of Georgie and how
well he has embraced the changes happening to him, DMD is
part of Georgie not all of Georgie! He lives life to the full and
that is all thanks to every single wonderful person who has
helped him do just that in 2018. He is cheeky, kind, caring and
lovable as is his twin sister Lili-Jane.
Lili-Jane makes me proud every single day she is such a
wonderful sister, she loves Georgie so much she cares plays
cuddles and fights with him every day like any other family but
like she says he's MY Georgie and I love him!
As most of you know we support many other charities along our
journey: Action Duchenne, Muscular Dystrophy UK, Little Havens
Hospice for Children, Farleighs Hospice, Crohns & Colitus, Dog
Trust, Cat Protection, Breast Cancer Research & Essex Air
Ambulance and in 2018 combined we have raised in the region
of £5,000.
2019 is going to be a big year for Georgie as he will leave
St Josephs school and head for WDF he is very excited to embrace
a new challange and can’t wait for Design and tech! I am very
proud of how Georgie has achieved so much at St Josephs and
will be very sad to leave.
We as a family will continue to fund raise for Georgie and our
listed charities in 2019 and would be so grateful for your
continued love and support as honestly I would buckle without
my focus to help, as Georgie's parents we often feel helpless as
we cannot stop DMD medically but we can give him and others
a life worth living!
Lastly a really big thank you to the FOCUS for supporting us with
printing etc! what a great team - thank you! xxx
If you have any donations for me of clothes, shoes, handbags,
towels, dvds, cds, teddies, unwanted gifts, please call me on
Love & Thanks always!
Wishing you all a happy and healthy Christmas and 2019!
LADIES SHOW SUPPORT AT ‘bRA’ CHRISTMAS LUNCH
Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA), the charity that supports
patients through breast reconstruction, celebrated the end of
another great year.
Every year, the charity organises a lunch to raise funds to help
educate nurses, buy specialised garments and offer psychological
support to patients who are going through a mastectomy.
Guests were also treated to an exclusive Christmas market
featuring stalls from local artisan makers selling handbags,
jewellery, chocolates, cards, candles and festive gifts.
Event organiser Annette Palmer, healthcare support worker in
the Breast Reconstruction nursing team, said: “This year’s lunch
has been brilliant! Through ticket sales, raffle prizes and a
massive donation, we raised a staggering £3,000.
“It’s such a privilege to organise this event, I love it. The lunch
gives us an opportunity to invite and say thank you to our Show
and Tell ladies. They come once or twice a month to talk to the
new ladies about their experience and what they went through.
They are a vital part of the charity.
“I’m so proud of what we do, and what we have achieved since
the charity started 14 years ago.”
The Breast Reconstruction nursing team in the St. Andrews
Plastics Centre at Broomfield Hospital have treated thousands of
patients across Mid Essex. They provide extra support above and
beyond what the Trust can provide through government
funding.
The following business donated a percentage of their sales
during the event: Aston Green Interiors, Mrs. Button’s Handmade
Chocolates, Barbara Kilbey Cards, Abigail’s Lifestyle &
Delicatessen, Anne Graystone, and Elan Candles.
Thanks also to Asha Laurence for her beautiful singing and our
hosts the Channels Estate for such a magical afternoon.
8 years ago Khianna was born to a
mother who was a heroin addict and
who used throughout her pregnancy.
As a result Khianna is severely
disabled, she will never be able to walk
and her hands are also affected. She
also suffers severe muscle
underdevelopment leaving her very
weak. Khianna’s grandparents were
given custody at three months old and
they have brought Khianna up as their
own daughter. Unfortunately 18
months ago Grandad was diagnosed with terminal cancer and
in April this year he passed away leaving Khianna and Nanny.
They live in a two bedroom house with all the facilities upstairs,
meaning Nanny at 77 has to carry Khianna up the stairs to the
bathroom. They have managed to arrange a swap through the
local authority for a ground floor flat, but the flat is in need of
some TLC.
The Tea Dance Group have donated the materials to lay
wheelchair friendly flooring throughout the flat and the paint to
redecorate, and a Woodham builder and his team are donating
their labour to carry out the works. Unfortunately many children
are affected in many different ways because of drug abuse by
their parents, it’s yet another social problem that needs
attention. But we are hoping this will help make life a little
easier for Khianna and her Nanny.
Strictly may be coming to an end for this year but South
Woodham Tea Dances continue monthly throughout the year, so
If you fancy some Ballroom, Latin or Sequence dancing please
come along. All our profits are used to help others in less
fortunate circumstances, small things can make a big difference.
Our next dance is on the 20th January 2019 at the Village Hall,
Peace on earth
Are you a ‘BOB’ (Bored Of Brexit), or a ‘SOB’ (Sick Of Brexit)? I guess if you are either of
these you’ve seen the ‘B’ word (twice) in the first sentence and stopped reading! I am
both a ‘BOB’ and ‘SOB’, but I confess I am a bit of an addict to Brexit news – it’s the only
soap opera I watch.
As I write I am preparing for the Christmas special – the meaningful vote – there’s always
a cliff-hanger at Christmas. Advent is a time of preparation for another cliff hanger – the
coming of Jesus. In church our Advent readings remind us of two things: 1) His coming has been foretold by
the prophets and 2) He will come into a world of conflict and there will be more mayhem to come. They got
that right for sure. It is not only in the UK that things are in turmoil. Look at Yemen, weather related disasters.
Global warming… You could be forgiven for thinking that the signs of the end times are right on our door step.
But the coming of Jesus gives us insight to a bigger picture. The picture that is God’s love for his creation.
Personally, I take comfort in the fact that the chaos in our world has been foretold – and God’s answer was also
foretold, the coming of Jesus to show us a better way. And like events in our world today, the coming of the
saviour was not the end of the troubles, but the start of another challenge to make his love known.
Many of the events we read about tell us that we have not done enough to bring about the Peace on Earth
that he came to bring. So, if you can’t see a way through the current crises – step back and think of the bigger
picture. Troubles come and go, but God’s love for us is a constant. In these turbulent times, we could focus
on showing a little love to each other. Maybe, just maybe, if THIS is our focus, that bigger picture of Peace on
Earth, could become our reality.
CHELMSFORD FOODbANK THANKS PUbLIC FOR SUPPORT IN RAISING
OVER £20,0000 IN CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN
Chelmsford Foodbank has raised almost £24,000 in a crowdfunding campaign to purchase a new van with which to transport food
between its warehouse and distribution centres.
Chelmsford Foodbank launched its crowdfunding campaign in July of this year to coincide with its 6th anniversary. The aim was to
raise £15,000 to replace an aging and unreliable van. Thanks to the support of the public, the Foodbank has been able to purchase
a van and put funds towards the ongoing running costs.
The van is a vital part of the Foodbank operation, enabling the transportation of food between the warehouse and centres and also
facilitating the collection of larger donations. When it became clear that it would need to be replaced, Chelmsford Foodbank team
decided to enlist the support of the public through a crowdfunding campaign. This was launched in July and was promoted weekly
for eight weeks through Facebook, gaining the support of Essex Live who visited and produced a film promoting the campaign.
When the Give. Net webpage was taken down at the beginning of October, almost £24,000 had been raised. Chelmsford Foodbank
have been overwhelmed by the kindness of the people of Chelmsford and want to express their sincere thanks to the public for their
incredible generosity.
Ruth Leverett, Project Manager said, ‘We are often impacted by the generosity of the public in Chelmsford as donations come in
throughout the year but we have really been overwhelmed at the response to our recent crowdfunding campaign enabling us to
purchase a decent van. Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude go to those who have given and who have supported us throughout. This
will enable us to continue to provide emergency food to those struggling in our city with food poverty.’
Chelmsford Foodbank
opened at the Waterfront
Place on July 16th 2012 and
now comprises of five
distribution centres across
Chelmsford and a warehouse.
The Foodbank is dependent
on the generosity of the
public. Since Chelmsford
Foodbank started, the public
have given over 170 tonnes of
food and given out over
18,000 3-days supplies of
emergency food. They
currently have over 100
volunteers working in the
distribution centres,
warehouse and doing office
tasks and were finalists in
Essex County Council’s, Who
will care? Awards 2017 for the
category of Volunteer team
award. In addition, the
Foodbank has pioneered
“More Than Food”
programmes, 4families, a
holiday club, which provides
meals and activities for
families who would normally
receive free school meals
during term time and Eat
Well Spend Less, a cookery
and budgeting course to
support struggling families.
HAPPY ENDING: Organ donation is something we intend to sign up for
but all too often forget. Perhaps we should think of it as 'recycling' as
that's in vogue at the moment - and, as with recycling, there are
increasing numbers of uses to which the various parts of the body can be
put.
The latest is the transplantation of a womb (which we docs call a uterus,
forgetting that 'womb' is a perfectly good word.) This womb was taken
from a woman who'd had children and subsequently (and
unconnectedly) died of a cerebral haemorrhage – and it was
transplanted into a woman who, according to BBC news, had "Mayer-
Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, which affects about one in every
4,500 women and results in the vagina and uterus/womb failing to form
properly. However, her ovaries were fine."
After the transplanted womb had 'bedded in' eggs were taken from her
ovaries which, as I say, were in good shape, they were fertilised in vitro
and were implanted into the donated womb. A successful pregnancy
ensued and a healthy baby was born.
This technique has been used successfully in the past BUT has been
successful only with close relatives donating the organ. So, for example,
a young woman was given her own mother's womb (in other words -
the womb in which she, herself, started life) in order that she could have
a child of her own. How weird is that? Weird and wonderful!
The 10 previous transplants from a 'dead donor' failed - so all the more
reason to celebrate this long awaited success.
This is not a technique to be embarked on lightly – the surgery takes
some seven to ten hours (depending on which report you read) and it is
necessary to take anti-rejection drugs thereafter – but it does seem to
give those who are desperate to bear a child but are born without a
womb (or find themselves without one) the opportunity to do so.
TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY! It's also the season to take care on the
roads - as there's nothing jolly about the untimely demise of someone
involved in a road traffic accident - particularly when that someone is a
young person. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that "Road
traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young
adults aged 5-29 years (most of these occurring in low- and middleincome
countries.)
SAD NEWS - Steve's Garage in the Old Wickford Rd will shortly have to
stop providing petrol for its loyal customers. This place is an institution -
it's been here even longer than I have. Motor vehicles were fairly
rudimentary back then, of course, and a man with a red flag had to walk
in front of them. Throughout the years, it's always been a place where
you went, not just for petrol and nefarious bits and pieces - you went
there to be cheered up. And if there was a petrol shortage he made sure
the GPs had enough to do their visits. I wish Steve and his family well -
and will continue to pop in for old times' sake - and for those marvellous
bones that keep the dogs busy for days. Lovely job!
CURES IN THE NEWS. Cannabis oil has hogged the headlines recently
and, given that journalists tend to classify medication as either a 'miracle
cure' or a 'killer drug', the publicity has given the impression that it will
cure anything and everything. It won’t of course - but it is helpful in
carefully selected cases. I used a pharmacology textbook in my student
days which was written by 'Laurence' ... he was a pharmacologist with a
sense of humour (a rare breed). There was a graph showing the way
attitudes change to drugs over time. New drugs are initially greeted with
scepticism (and their 'inventers' are told they're bonkers – then each one
is exalted as a cure-all but, as soon as side effects such as agranulocytocis
(a serious blood condition) start appearing, the drug is written off: "I
wouldn't give it to a dog!" Eventually it finds its place - it is shown to be
of benefit in a relatively small number of carefully chosen cases.
Sometimes much the same applies to old drugs that are found to have
new uses.
We are coming up to that time of year when there have traditionally
been more drunk drivers on the road so the message is clearly (a) don’t
drink and drive – and (b) even if you haven’t been drinking behave as if
all the other road users have. In other words, be super-cautious.
The WHO warns against driving under the influence of alcohol and other
psychoactive substances (such as 'recreational drugs') as this increases the
risk of a crash that results in death or serious injuries.
The WHO doctor (i.e. Dr WHO) says: "In the case of drink-driving, the risk
of a road traffic crash starts at low levels of blood alcohol concentration
(BAC) and increases significantly when the driver's BAC is ≥ 0.04 g/dl. In
the case of drug-driving, the risk of incurring a road traffic crash is
increased to differing degrees depending on the psychoactive drug used.
For example, the risk of a fatal crash occurring among those who have
used amphetamines is about 5 times the risk of someone who hasn't."
As I've mentioned previously there are also more liver deaths amongst
the young – and alcohol is the principal cause of these. It’s not the sort
of message you really want to hear in the run-up to Christmas – but
please don’t shoot the messenger. Research led by the University of
Michigan and published this year, underlines the fact that deaths due to
liver disease are on the rise in the U.S., and researchers warn that alcohol
use is to blame. Cirrhosis deaths have increased by 65 percent, and
alcohol use is a prominent cause of late-stage liver disease. The highest
average increase in cirrhosis-related deaths per year was seen among
YOUNG adults, at an approximately 10.5 percent rise each year,
according to Medical News Today. I'm told the same trend can be seen in
the UK resulting in much wailing and gnashing of teeth among the liver
doctors.
To make 100% sure that I've completely ruined the Christmas spirit for
you (they don't call me Dr Grinch for nothing you know), here's another
bit of bad news. Drug deaths are also on the rise - for example Vice
reports that: "Between 2016 and 2017, the number of recorded cocainerelated
deaths increased for the sixth year running, from 371 to 432. Of
these cocaine deaths, a significant number are thought to be related to
the use of crack cocaine." So - just say "NO" ... unless you're middle class
in which case you should say: "No, thank you."
What has made less of the splash is some brilliant work that came out of
Cambridge – finding the genes that are responsible for rare diseases and
cancers (both of which are strongly linked to changes in DNA.) This opens
the door to finding treatments that are tailored specifically to the disease
in question.
Fergus Walsh reports for the BBC: "Scientists in Cambridge have
completed the world's largest gene sequencing project in healthcare -
which brings hope of better understanding of diseases and faster
diagnosis. People with rare diseases, their family members and cancer
patients took part. Genomics England described the project as
"transformational in what it means to society and humanity".
He goes on to say: "One in four participants with rare diseases received
a diagnosis for the first time. Until now, parents of children with rare
genetic conditions typically spent years trying to find out the cause. The
100,000 Genomes Project has ended this "diagnostic odyssey" for many
families, and in some cases, led to effective treatments."
FW talks briefly about "Hana Young's daughter Tilly, aged six, who has
a disorder which causes delayed development and seizures." She "had
her genome sequenced, along with both her parents." From this a
diagnosis and treatment emerged. Hana says: "She is communicating,
full of life, her epilepsy is gone and she is no longer violent,"
The genome sequencing has been carried out at the Wellcome Sanger
Institute, near Cambridge, and they have got so good at it now that the
price is tumbling ... so much so that the day when this can be used as a
'routine test' within the NHS is in sight ... although, given the mess the
NHS is in at the moment, you'll need some pretty powerful binoculars to
see it.
This is something that is likely to have widespread applications for ever
and a day - so how's that for a bit of good news to end on!
Dr John
DING DONG MERRILY: WANDERERS REACH THE
QUARTER FINAL ON A HIGH
South Woodham Ferrers United under 14 Wanderers find themselves in unfamiliar territory: the quarter finals of a cup competition,
after a decisive victory over Corinthians. In contrast to league form, Wanderers are performing well in the cup and opened brightly
with Will’s trademark long-range free kick putting them ahead as the ball skipped through a crowded defence. This provoked some
rather robust commentary from a small but vocal selection of the away supporters, which rather tarnished the positive Wanderers
vibe. Taking his turn in goal, Charlie W was out quickly to fend the ball away under a rare burst of Corinthians pressure. At the other
end, Jacob had a long shot saved, before Daniel made a penetrating run down the wing to give Harrison the means to make an
exquisite cross, which Freddie latched onto drawing a foul in the box. Confusion ensued: Tom’s resulting penalty was palmed out by
the keeper but Daniel was quickest to respond and seemed to have scored. However the linesman advised the referee that players
had been encroaching. Rather than retake the penalty as the referee later commented would have been the right decision, a goal
kick was awarded, much to the bemusement of the Wanderers’ boys and disappointment of Daniel, who rarely gets so far forwards.
Jacob had another shot saved, then Harvey’s powerful defensive clearance set up Harrison, who put the ball over the bar. Jacob’s next
shot rebounded off a well-placed defender before Tom’s corner was headed in by Alfie for Wanderers’ second, which Tom quickly
followed up by one of his own to put the reds three up at half time.
Mack donned the purple shirt and gloves for a second half goal keeping debut and started brightly to save a free kick, but could do
little to stop Corinthian’s opener, turned in from a lengthy throw in. Harrison put another shot over the bar before, in the driving
rain, all seemed to be going wrong as Corinthians sneaked in another goal. In a tense period of play, Alfie shot over the bar, Will and
Luke needed to be strong at the back as the opposition pressed forwards, while Freddie, Bobby and Matthew were steely in midfield.
With the small, vocal group now upping hostile comments directed towards the referee, Wanderers’ players and parents, Clare’s plea
that “we could do with another one” was instantly rewarded by Jacob, whose beefy shot from outside the area looped over the
keeper to put Wanderers 4-2 up. Not quite satisfied with the score-line, Tom’s precise free kick found Charlie W’s head to make it five
goals. And yes, in response to the irate query, we ARE proud of our boys, thank you. Quarter finals here we come…
Squad: Alfie, Bobby, Charlie R (side-lined but on the mend), Charlie W, Daniel, Freddie, Harrison, Harvey, Jacob, Luke, Mack, Matthew,
Tom, Will
