It's 2019!
This is the first time we start a
calendar year, and here at VIVA
NOLA Magazine, we are so
excited about what's coming in
2019.
We are fully energized to take on
the new year, especially because
of new partnerships that are
taking place. Partnering with
New Orleans institutions is a big
deal for us because they are a
testament of how the
community in general has
embraced our bilingual content,
and how we are achieving our mission of connecting
communities and crossing over markets.
We begin this year planning a special event for late Spring that I
think New Orleans residents will absolutely enjoy. I cannot wait
to share the details as everything starts taking shape. With that
being said, there are many things that come up between
publications, so I highly encourage you to connect with us via
social media to stay in the know and find out what we are doing
first. We are on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as
@vivanolamag, and on Instagram you can find us as @viva_nola.
Our main goal for the year is to share and connect more with our
audience. We will continue to work hard to become essential to
our amazing community. For now, let the King Cake season and
the Mardi Gras countdown begin!
Looking forward to a fun 2019,
It?s January in New Orleans and that
means it?s time to hit the streets! Odds
are, you?re going to find yourself
dancing down Frenchmen Street at
some point this carnival
season? celebrating life. Yes, there are
few streets in post-Katrina New
Orleans that conjure up images of fun,
laughter, jazz, and an all-around good
time like Frenchmen Street. However,
things at the edge of the French
Quarter weren?t always so jovial.
In 1763, the countries of Europe signed
the Treaty of Paris, thus ending the 7
Years War (also known as the French
and Indian War). Just a year earlier,
France and Spain met secretly and
signed the Treaty of Fontainebleau
which gave Louisiana and New Orleans
to Spain. Of course, there were no cell
phones or Internet back then, so news
of the secret treaty finally spread in
1764.
Overnight the French
and German settlers of
New Orleans became
Spaniards.
Overnight the French and German
settlers of Louisiana and New Orleans
became Spaniards, and as such, it was
expected that they now drink
Catalonian wine from Spain, rather
than Bordeaux wine from France. Well,
this news was shocking to most
residents of New Orleans, as you can
imagine.
A few years passed, and Spain finally
sent a new Spanish governor to
Louisiana. Don Antonio de Ulloa
showed up with his wife and was
immediately met with resistance by the
French population who did not want to
be Spanish or drink Spanish wine.
Ulloa wanted to stop some of the
nefarious happenings in New Orleans.
There was rampant smuggling
happening up and down the river, so
the new Spanish governor decided to
shut down all of the entrances to the
river except for one. The local shipping
industry wouldn?t tolerate it. In 1768,
600 residents helped run Ulloa out of
town in what is now called the
Louisiana Rebellion of 1768? the first
rebellion of European-Americans
against European powers.
4
7
When news of the rebellion reached
Spain, the King was furious. About a
year later, Spain sent Don Alejandro
O?Reilly (an Irishman) to re-establish
Spanish rule. Upon his arrival, O?Reilly
threw a dinner party and invited those
who organized the rebellion. He
promised no one would be punished.
However, at the dinner party, he
had them arrested. Five of the 4
the currency changed to the
peso? but the local population never
forgot the Frenchmen whom were
killed or imprisoned during the revolt.
conspirators were sentenced to death
by firing squad on October 26, 1769,
another five were imprisoned in Cuba
for two years, and another was sent
to prison in France. Among those
killed were Nicholas Chauvin de
Lafreniere (same as in the park in
Metairie).
Over the next few months, ?Bloody?
O?Reilly (as he was then known as)
There are few streets in
post-Katrina New Orleans that
conjure up images of fun,
laughter, jazz, and an all-around
good time like Frenchmen
Street.
established Spanish rule in Louisiana.
French flags were lowered, and
Spanish flags were raised, street
names were translated or changed,
36 years later, Bernard Marigny sold
his land downriver from the French
Quarter and subdivided the land. As
he named the new streets for things
he loved, like Craps, Love, and Good
Children, there was one street he
saved in honor of those men who
died fighting for their freedom.
Rumor has it that the execution of the
Frenchmen happened nearby where
Frenchmen Street meets Esplanade
Avenue today.
So, this carnival, as you dance down
Frenchmen Street, pour some out for
those Frenchmen who stood up
against government rules and
regulations. Listen to some jazz? that
musical art form from New Orleans
that breaks all the rules. Do watcha
rato. Pocas como lo hace la calle
Frenchmen. Sin embargo, este área al
borde del Barrio Francés no siempre
fue tan jovial.
En 1763, los países de Europa firmaron
el Tratado de París, terminando así la
Guerra de los Siete Años (una guerra
principalmente entre Francia e India).
Un año antes, Francia y España se
reunieron en secreto y firmaron el
Tratado de Fontainebleau, que otorgó
Luisiana y Nueva Orleans a España.
potencias europeas.
Cuando las noticias de la rebelión
llegaron a España, el Rey estaba
furioso. Aproximadamente un año
después, España envió a Don Alejandro
castigado. Sin embargo, durante la
cena, arrestó a los rebeldes que
asistieron. Cinco de los conspiradores
fueron condenados a muerte por
fusilamiento el 26 de octubre de 1769;
parque).
Durante los meses siguientes a su
llegada, "Bloody" O?Reilly (como se le
conoció en ese entonces) estableció el
Gobierno español en Louisiana. Las
banderas francesas se quitaron para
levantar las banderas españolas; los
nombres de las calles fueron
traducidos al español; se cambió la
moneda al peso, pero la población
local nunca olvidó a los franceses que
fueron asesinados o encarcelados
durante la revuelta.
36 años después, Bernard Marigny
vendió su terreno río abajo del Barrio
Francés, creando subdivisiones, y
escogió los nombres de las calles de
ese sector con cosas que le gustaban,
como el juego de Craps, Love, Good
Children, y por supuesto, Frenchmen,
una calle que conservó en honor a
aquellos hombres que murieron
luchando por su libertad. Los rumores
cuentan que la ejecución de estos
franceses sucedió cerca de lo que es
hoy la intersección de la calle
Frenchmen y la avenida Esplanade.
Así que, en este carnaval, mientras
bailas en la calle Frenchmen, brinda y
derrama un trago en honor a aquellos
franceses que se revelaron en contra
de las normas y regulaciones del
Gobierno. Escucha algo de jazz, el arte
musical de Nueva Orleans que rompe
todas las reglas? ¡Haz lo que te
parezca! - es la tradición.
Celebrating Women in
Gender Equality
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Even though there is an increased
awareness of the hardships that female
professionals have dealt with and
overcome, there is a lot more work to be
done. Traditional and cultural ideas of
femininity have deeply influenced how
women are treated and viewed which is
an unfortunate worldwide reality.
Perceptions and expectations, amongst
other factors, make it hard for female
professionals to advance in their careers
and acquire an active participation in
different roles of public life. With a lack of
female representation, it is hard for
younger generations to imagine and
visualize their possibilities.
To overcome these challenges, it is
crucial to propagate success stories of
women in business and to celebrate
these successes, achieved both in
business and society, and to highlight
emerging female role models. It is quite
challenging to imagine something that
you have never seen. Seeing women
achieve amazing life goals serves as
inspiration, motivation, and as a reminder
that you can get there too!
Increased visibility of successful women
in business also helps raise
7
awareness of many issues that need to
be solved, paving the way to female
success. I had the honor of participating
in the Stevie Awards for Women in
Business. This event, set in New York,
honored women executives,
entrepreneurs, employees, and the
companies they run worldwide. The
awards were presented to winners during
a dinner event with more than 550
people in attendance.
This year marked the 15th Anniversary of
the Stevie Awards and the inauguration
of the Women Future Conference
preceding the award ceremony. It was an
entire day of celebrating the
achievements of
working women
around the world.
I was inspired to
meet successful
women from
Jordan, Malaysia,
Canada, Mexico
and many other
countries.
Events like the
Stevie Awards
are important to
promote women
empowerment and introduce female role
models to our community. We need to do
more. We must develop innovative and
inclusive approaches to attain gender
equality in all aspects of society.
We must tackle common barriers
collectively to progress in business and
society: We must endeavor to achieve
equal pay, equality, diversity in senior
representation, safety for students and
faculty on campus, advocating for,
defending, demanding, and succeeding
in STEM Education, and sensitizing
organizations guilty of unconscious bias.
Until next time!

Celebrando a las
profesionales y
promoviendo la
equidad de género.
Por Alejandr a Guzm án
En estos días, más que nunca,
existe más conciencia sobre las
dificultades por las que pasan las
mujeres profesionistas. Sin
embargo, aún hay mucho por
hacer. Es una realidad muy
lamentable en todo el mundo que
la cultura y las ideas tradicionales
sobre lo que es la feminidad,
afecten profundamente cómo son
vistas y tratadas las mujeres.
Entre otros factores, la percepción
y la expectativa hacen muy difícil
que las mujeres profesionales se
desarrollen en sus carreras, y que
tengan una participación activa en
muchos aspectos de la vida
pública. Para las generaciones
más jóvenes, esta situación
dificulta imaginar las posibilidades.
Una parte importante para
sobrepasar estos obstáculos, es la
celebración de los éxitos de las
mujeres en los negocios y en la
sociedad. Asimismo, se deben
promover a aquellas mujeres que
son modelos a seguir.
Esto es importante, porque es muy
difícil imaginar algo que nunca se
ha visto. Es fuente de inspiración
cuando se tiene la oportunidad de
ver a otra mujer hacer cosas
increíbles, además de que es un
recordatorio de que se puede
llegar también a donde ella está.
Asimismo, sirve para levantar
conciencia de los muchos temas
8
pendientes por resolver para
permitir el éxito femenino.
Recientemente, tuve el honor de
ser parte de los Stevie Awards for
Women in Business (Los Premios
Stevie para las Mujeres
Profesionistas). Este evento
conmemora a mujeres ejecutivas,
emprendedoras y empleadas.
También a las compañías que ellas
encabezan alrededor del mundo.
Los reconocimientos fueron
presentados a las ganadoras
durante una cena en la ciudad de
Nueva York, con más de 550
personas presentes. Este año
marcó el 15 aniversario de los
Premios Stevie, y la inauguración
de la Women Future
Conference (Conferencia Mujer
Futuro), que precedió la ceremonia
de premiación.
Fue un día entero celebrando los
logros de mujeres trabajadoras
provenientes de todo el mundo.
Me pareció muy inspirador poder
conocer a mujeres exitosas de
Jordania, Malasia, Canadá, México
y muchos otros países.
Aunque eventos como este son
importantes para continuar
promoviendo el empoderamiento
femenino, tenemos que hacer
mucho más. En todas las áreas de
la sociedad necesitamos encontrar
formas innovadoras e inclusivas
para lograr la equidad de género.
Colectivamente, necesitamos
atacar las barreras comunes,
desde igualdad en el pago,
diversidad de representación en
puestos ejecutivos, seguridad en
nuestros campus, promover
carreras en STEM, hasta la
sensibilización sobre
discriminación inconsciente.
¡Hasta la próxima!

enough to receive a new computer, these tips are for
you. Well, if you didn?t receive one recently but you
own a somewhat new device, you also want to pay
Every new computer comes with some sort of
antivirus, which is a trial version most of the time,
and then the company will try to push for you to buy
it. As an I.T. professional, I can confirm that there are
several programs free of charge that can keep your
computer safe. Remember that having a good
antivirus is a must, since hackers are always trying to
improve their skills and they get clever in making
their schemes look like legitimate requests.
?Bronchiolitis in my baby?s daycare
? What is that??
HEALTH CHECK
by ARTUROGASTAñADUY, M.D.
Bronchiolitis is the inflammation of the
bronchioles which are the smallest
airways of the lungs. This inflammation is
caused mainly by a Respiratory Syncytial
Virus (RSV). RSV is so highly contagious
that everyone has been infected before
reaching two years of age. Typical
outbreaks of RSV occur yearly between
November and April.
Most of the illnesses associated with RSV
are mild to moderate, but the disease is
more severe in infants and adults over 65
years of age. RSV causes 2 million
outpatient visits and 60,000
hospitalizations per year in children and
177,000 hospitalizations and 14,000
deaths in senior citizens.
The illness begins with runny nose
followed by sneezing, cough, congestion,
fever, fast respiration and wheezing. By
the third to fifth day of illness, children
present difficulties while breathing, chest
retractions, irritability and problems with
eating and sleeping. Frightening periods
of stopping breathing may occur. The
12
length of the illness duration is about two
weeks and it resolves spontaneously.
Breast fed babies have milder disease.
Severe disease occurs more commonly in
younger infants, premature or low-birth
weight babies, and those with chronic
lung or heart disease, neuromuscular
disorders and immunosuppression.
Common complications include viral
pneumonia and ear infections and there is
some association of RSV with the
development of asthma.
Diagnosis can be made based on
symptoms and the time of the year and
can be confirmed with a nose swab
sample test. There is not routinely used
specific treatment for RSV infections.
Therefore, supportive treatment is
recommended with frequent nasal saline
drops and nose suction, encouraging fluid
intake, and fever control. Very sick
patients may require intravenous fluids,
and oxygen in hospital. Ribavirin aerosol
can be used for high-risk hospitalized
patients.
Infection does not produce immunity.
Multiple re-infections are the rule,
producing common-cold-like illness.
There is no vaccine for RSV but monthly
injections of RSV antibodies (Palivizumab)
during the RSV season are available for
high risk infants.
You could decrease the chances of RSV in
your children by avoiding contact with
sick people and practicing good hygiene
with frequent hand washing.

Bronquiolitis en la guardería de mi bebé?
? ¿Qué es eso?
by Arturo gastaÑaduy, M.d.
3 Signs Your
Str ategic
Planning
Pr ocess I s
I ncom plete
By Blanca Robinson
Strategic planning is the development and
implementation of various operational plans by
companies or organizations, with the intention of
achieving objectives and goals. These plans can
be short, medium or long term. A sound strategic
planning process includes three elements. If your
organization does a poor or incomplete job on any
of these areas, your process is incomplete and
won?t get the results you expect.
Answer the BIG strategic planning questions.
These include: Who are our customers; how can
we better serve them? Who are our competitors;
how can we beat them? What do we do best; how
can we build on that edge? What are potential
scenarios to consider for the future; how will we
prepare for them? How can we defend against
threats and seize opportunities?
Some organizations come up with brilliant answers
to these questions, but can?t take them to the point
of clear initiatives that get done. The BIG
questions are worthless if they don?t result in a few
clear, compelling strategic initiatives.
Set a few clear priorities and an overall
strategic theme.
The best outcome is to identify the most
14
important priorities for the
organization. Starting with a
long list of potential
priorities, the organization
discusses the relative value
of each, and hones in only a
few key priorities. This
discussion also leads to
greater clarity about the big
strategic planning questions,
especially about what the
organization should do best.
During this phase, many
organizations settle for a
long list of priorities. This
has the benefit that nobody feels excluded or
insulted; however, it makes it highly unlikely that
the organization will get anything done completely.
picture questions, but fail to follow up. Some set
too many priorities, and can?t say ?no? to good
ideas, despite limited resources. Which of the
above areas is weakest in your organization?
Som e or ganizations com e up with br illiant
answer s to the BIG questions, but can?t tak e
them to the point of clear initiatives that get
done.
Implement.
The biggest complaint we hear about strategy is
that it never seems to get executed. A few reasons
why:
- Neglecting to commit essential resources to
the strategy, including capital, training,
technology, and people.
- Failing to take things off the plate of busy
employees, and instead just stacking more
work on them.
- Having lack of will to stop old initiatives that
compete with the new.
- Not setting clear roles, responsibilities,
accountability, and rewards systems.
- Giving up after a few setbacks or initial
resistance.
A sound strategy spends as much time on
implementation planning as it does on the more
glamorous work of answering the key strategic
questions and setting priorities.
Some organizations are strong at asking the big
3 señales
que su
estrategia
de
planeación
está
incompleta.
Por Blanca Robinson
La planeación estratégica es la
elaboración, desarrollo y puesta en
marcha de distintos planes operativos
por parte de las empresas u
organizaciones, con la intención de
alcanzar objetivos y metas planteadas.
Estos planes pueden ser a corto,
mediano o largo plazo.
Un buen proceso de planificación
estratégica incluye tres elementos. Si su
organización realiza un trabajo
deficiente en cualquiera de estas áreas,
su proceso estará incompleto y no
obtendrá los resultados que espera.
Analice las tres señales a continuación
que pueden indicarle cómo mejorar su
proceso de planeación estratégica.
Responder las preguntas básicas de
planeación estratégica.
Estas incluyen: ¿Quiénes son nuestros
clientes? ¿Cómo podemos servirles
mejor? ¿Quiénes son nuestros
competidores? ¿Cómo podemos
vencerlos? ¿Qué hacemos mejor?
¿Cómo podemos construir sobre esa
ventaja? ¿Cuáles son los escenarios
potenciales a considerar para el futuro?
¿Cómo nos prepararemos para estos?
¿Cómo podemos defendernos contra
las amenazas y aprovechar las
oportunidades?
Algunas organizaciones obtienen
respuestas brillantes a estas preguntas,
pero no logran convertirlas en iniciativas
concisas que se lleven a cabo. Las
16
preguntas básicas pierden valor si no
dan como resultado iniciativas
estratégicas claras y convincentes.
Establecer prioridades claras y un tema
estratégico general.
El mejor resultado es lograr identificar
las prioridades claves para la
organización. Se comienza con una lista
larga de posibles prioridades, y así, la
organización analiza el valor relativo de
cada una para enfocarse en solo las
prioridades principales.
prioridades clave.
Implementar.
La queja más grande que escuchamos
sobre la estrategia es que parece que
nunca se ejecuta.
Algunas razones
por las cuales no
hay éxito en su
ejecución:
- Negarse a comprometer recursos
esenciales para la estrategia, incluidos
capital, capacitación, tecnología y
personal.
nuevas.
- No establecer roles,
responsabilidades, seguimiento y
sistemas de recompensas claros.
- Renunciar después de algún
contratiempo o resistencia inicial.
Una estrategia sólida dedica tanto
tiempo a la planificación de la
implementación como al trabajo más
glamoroso de responder las preguntas
estratégicas clave y establecer
prioridades.
Algunas organizaciones son fuertes
para establecer las preguntas básicas,
pero no hacen un seguimiento. Algunas
establecen demasiadas prioridades y no
Tito'sCeviche&Pisco
Ceviche Cr iollo at Tito's Ceviche & Pisco
by Leslie Alm eida
@nola.eats
New Orleans is a tapestry of food
cultures. From the earliest influences
of Spanish, French and African cuisine
300 years ago, to the eventual
introduction of Vietnamese, Italian and
other European food identities, the
weave is myriad and diverse. Our most
famous Cajun and Creole dishes
incorporate the flavors from all these
Suspir o Lim eño, desser t at Tito's Ceviche & Pisco
ethnic groups and more, creating
gastronomic experiences that are often
imitated yet seldom duplicated.
Peru, like Louisiana, was developed by
indigenous peoples, later colonized,
and then inhabited by immigrants from
around the world, creating a
multicultural nation. Unlike Louisiana,
it?s been around a lot longer than three
centuries. The comestible customs of
these societies are reflected in the
cuisine of Peru, with aspects of
Spanish, Asian and African cooking
often sharing the spotlight with the
Amerindian and Andean ways. It is
befitting that Tito?s Ceviche and Pisco,
the Peruvian restaurant helmed by
Chef Juan Lock, would find its place in
the New Orleans dining landscape.
Chef Juan, a native of Lima, Peru, is
no stranger to the city. After managing
a popular steakhouse in Fort
Lauderdale, he returned to New
Orleans, eventually opening Tito?s
Ceviche and Pisco with his wife,
Tatiana, in August of 2017. Cooking,
he says, has always been a family
affair. ?I started cooking as a little kid
helping my mother in the kitchen, and I
really enjoyed it.?
Ceviche, widely considered to have
originated in Peru (sorry, Ecuador), is
the star of the menu, served alongside
complementary seafood dishes that
26 may be seared, poached or fried. 18
essentially a stir fry and fried rice, respectively. Japanese
influence is represented with the tiraditos, which
resembles a thinly sliced crudo but is more akin to
sashimi. Perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of
Peruvian cuisine is the presence of ancient foods and the
crops that are thought to be native to Peru; tomatoes,
quinoa and most varieties of potatoes have been traced
back to the country?s earliest years.
"Comencé a cocinar
sashimi.
Quizás uno de los aspectos más
fascinantes de la cocina peruana
es la presencia de alimentos
antiguos, y los cultivos que se
cree que son nativos del Perú; los
tomates, la quinua y la mayoría
de las variedades de papas se
remontan a los primeros años del
país.
Es posible que la comida peruana
no haya estado siempre en el
radar de los habitantes de Nueva
Orleans, pero el aprecio por los
mariscos frescos, por lo menos,
es una razón suficiente para que
los locales lo adopten.
>>Escanea el código
para ver como se
hicieron los
cockteles Pisco
Punch y la Chicha
de Coco de la foto>>
El chef Juan se dio cuenta de
una oportunidad en Nueva
Orleans cuando no pudo
encontrar los platos que estaba
buscando. ?En Perú, encontrará
cevicherias con muchas
variedades de ceviches. Es muy
divertido. Queríamos compartir
algo de eso con Nueva Orleans,
para ofrecer otros platos
peruanos y un bar de pisco
completo. Nueva Orleans tiene
un excelente marisco local, lo que
facilita la creación de un puente
entre Perú y esta maravillosa
ciudad?, dijo el chef.
COVER STORY
RISAS RIZOS
A Natural Influencer
By AnaM ar ia Bech
22
Rocio Mora is a bilingual vlogger and a
master at teaching people how to take
care of natural hair. With Risas Rizos,
her YouTube channel that started in
2014, she has close to 150,000
subscribers. The channel, named as a
Spanish wordplay for "laughs" and
"curls," focuses mainly on the natural
care of curly hair, and it also offers
product reviews, make-up tutorials and
general beauty tips.
Mora was born in Baltimore and moved
to New Orleans as a toddler, where she
grew up surrounded by her Honduran
and Mexican families. This tall and lean
Latina beauty models from time to time
and has dabbled into TV hosting.
With Risas Rizos, her
YouTube channel that started
in 2014, Rocio Mora has close
to 150,000 subscribers.
She started
making video
blogs to save time,
instead of
repeating the
story over and
over to relatives and friends about what
she had done to revive her curls that
were lost due to heat damage. Mora
followed her cousin?s advice to make a
video and she uploaded it to YouTube.
The natural hair movement was
trending in the African American
community, but Latinas were not into it
yet. Risas Rizos vlogs targeted a niche
market that was perfect for companies
to extend their customer base to U.S.
Latinas and to Spanish-speaking
women in Latin America. Risas Rizos
gained subscribers almost immediately
and viewers were asking questions that
prompted to more and more videos.
Soon after, brands reached out and
Mora?s side job was born.
In her ?real? job, she worked as a
pipeline drafter at an engineering firm.
She was laid off during the oil industry
recession that hit Louisiana in 2015, just
a couple of days after returning from
the ?We All Grow Summit,? the first
bloggers conference she ever attended.
Mora found herself with virtually no
options in her career and was forced to
take a leap of faith and turn her
YouTube hobby into her next career.
Her mother, Juana Mora, encouraged
her to go to the Hispanicize conference
taking place in Miami the week after
Mora was laid off. Not knowing how
long she would be without a job, Mora
was hesitant to go, but her mother gave
her Southwest Airlines points for her
flight and encouraged her to go.
?Attending this
conference was a
game-changer because I
gained lots of
information, made great
connections, and was
able to meet the
Univision Connectors Network,? recalls
Mora.
Upon return, she chose to stop the job
hunt and devote all her time into
growing her digital footprint and her
Risas Rizos brand making videos day
after day without knowing if she would
get any return.
She had to keep a strong mindset to
ignore friends and family who were
advising her to go back to school and
find other jobs. But she saw the
potential, although she admits it was
tough in the beginning. ?The hardest
part was not knowing what was going to
happen next. I had never NOT worked
for anyone else and was used to
knowing what was coming ahead. Being
an entrepreneur, you can hope, you can
plan, but you just never know? ?
The first brand that reached out to
Risas Rizos was DevaCurl. ?They were
thanking me for my honest review of
their products and gifting me more
products to potentially review,? said
Mora. Then, the sponsorships started
coming. The first brand that paid
Mora for a post was Shea Moisture.
Risas Rizos still works with them and
since then, Mora has done campaigns
for beauty brands such as
Neutrogena, Proctor & Gamble?s
various product lines, Ulta Beauty,
and Dove, to name just a few.
Although the job of an influencer
seems glamorous and easy, there is a
lot that takes place to create
sponsored posts. Mora spends her
days creating the concepts and she
records and edits her vlogs. She also
books photographers and video crews
from certain jobs, handles the
administrative aspects of her
company and goes back and forth
with clients during the campaign
approval process. A simple
one-minute video can take hours to
shoot and days to edit. ?There are
many sleepless editing nights and a
lot of the time you have no one to
help you,? Mora says.
Mora is very proud of having
successfully pitched a campaign for a
brand that had nothing to do with
beauty. Last year, she went on a tour
called Rizos On the Road Presented by
Kia Motors, which was a series of
events in Miami, New Orleans,
Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago and
New York. The events celebrated
being Latina and Afro-Latina in the
natural hair space and community. ?I
presented the idea to Kia Motors of
America and found an
organic angle to
create the tour and
was able to bring
additional hair brand
sponsors that all
believed in the
message behind our
project.?
To Mora, the fact that
a national brand like
Kia would help
facilitate a dialogue
and conversations
about diversity and inclusion for
Latinos and the struggles many
Latinos had embracing their own
history and roots, is a great
accomplishment that goes beyond
marketing and validates what being
an influencer is really about.
Last September, Mora was chosen by
the New Orleans Marketing and
Tourism Corporation as the face of
their biggest Hispanic Heritage
Month marketing campaign. Mora
was featured in blogs and videos on
the GoNOLA website and told locals
and tourists alike about Hispanic
heritage in the city, where they could
find all things Latin and gave an
itinerary of her favorite things to do.
?I?ve always had a love for my Latino
community here and New Orleans has
always been my favorite city in the
world so to work on a campaign that
had to do with both of my loves was
an honor,? said Mora about working
on her first local campaign.
The evolution of her brand and the
expertise she has acquired during her
years as a digital influencer have
awakened a need for new goals. Mora
would like to ?act as a bridge of sorts
to reconnect Latinos to the soul of
New Orleans and to show the rest of
the city the many contributions
Latinos have made to amplify the
beauty and culture of New Orleans.?
Her local influence is growing, and she
was recently working on her second
local campaign for Mignon Faget.
Working long hours, believing in her
vision, and finding her niche have
taken Rocio Mora beyond what she
could ever have imagined when she
began making videos for fun.
Mora?s advice to any entrepreneur is
to always make good connections.
?You just never know where that
introduction will lead you, ?she firmly
says. Rocio is focused on doing more
local things that could transcend the
digital realm, so stay tuned to see
what this natural influencer will do
soon.
PORTADA
RISAS
RIZOS
Una influenciadora natural
Por AnaM ar ía Bech
Rocío Mora es una vloggera bilingüe
experta en enseñar a las personas a
cuidar apropiadamente el cabello
natural. Con Risas Rizos, su canal de
Youtube que empezó en 2014, ella
tiene cerca de los 150.000
suscriptores. El canal se enfoca
principalmente en el cuidado natural
del cabello rizado, y también ofrece un
análisis de productos, tutoriales de
maquillaje, y consejos de belleza
generales.
inmediatamente. Los espectadores
realizaban preguntas, que fueron
llevando a más y más videos. Pronto,
algunas marcas contactaron a Mora y
así nació su trabajo secundario.
En su ?trabajo real?laboró como
diseñadora de planos para una
empresa de ingeniería. Fue despedida
durante la recesión de la industria
petrolera que afectó a Louisiana en
2015, justo dos días después de haber
regresado del "We All Grow Summit", la
animó a ir. "Asistir a esta conferencia lo
cambió todo, porque aprendí mucho.
Hice excelentes conexiones y pude
conocer a las personas de Univision
Connectors Network", recuerda Mora.
A su regreso, optó por pausar su
búsqueda de empleo y dedicar todo
su tiempo a hacer crecer su huella
digital, y su marca Risas Rizos,
haciendo videos día tras día sin saber
si obtendría algún resultado
monetario.
no saber qué iba a pasar a
continuación. Nunca había trabajado
por mi cuenta y estaba acostumbrada a
saber lo que venía adelante. Siendo un
empresario, puedes esperar, puedes
planear, pero nunca se sabe...".
La primera marca que llegó a Risas
Rizos fue DevaCurl. "Me estaban
agradeciendo por mi opinión honesta de
sus productos, y me regalaron más
productos para analizar", dijo Mora.
Entonces, los patrocinios comenzaron
a llegar.
realizó una gira llamada Rizos On the
Road presentado por Kia Motors, que
fue una serie de eventos en Miami,
Nueva Orleans, Houston, Los Ángeles,
Chicago y Nueva York.
comunidad. "Presenté la idea a Kia
Motors of America y encontré un ángulo
orgánico para crear el recorrido y fui
capaz de atraer patrocinadores de
marcas adicionales de productos de
cabello que creían en el mensaje de
nuestro proyecto", comenta.
concluye Mora.
Why did you get into this field?
VIVIR MEJOR
By Andrea Mejia
The beginning of the year is always a great time for a fresh
start, but sometimes we try to achieve too much. Here are
some simple lifestyle changes that will help you ease into
healthier, everyday routines.
Move around.
Find the time to go outside. If you can?t fit a full workout
into your busy schedule, make it a point to walk outside
five minutes every day. This easy commitment could easily
turn into a workout habit.
Better Sleep
Not everyone is able to go to bed earlier, but the idea of
leisure at bedtime by reading, playing, or watching videos
on your device could be keeping you up longer instead of
winding you down. Put the phone and tablets away before
bedtime.
Down time is essential
Avoid burning out by filling up your agenda. Having days
of ?nothing to do? may be hard in our fast-paced world but
giving yourself one of those lazy days does the body and
mind well.
Focus on finding solutions
Only focus on problems when you are determined to find a
solution. If find yourself only complaining, shift your energy
immediately and focus on finding a solution to the
problem.
Say ?no?
No one wants to be perceived as the naysayer, but a firm
?no? sometimes is necessary. Over committing to please
others can make you miserable, so say ?no? when you
know agreeing to something will add pressure to yourself.
See the good in life
Look for the brightest side of things
Look for the brightest side of things and don?t take simple
things for granted. Usually those simple things are really
the essential ones for your happiness. Be grateful.
Lighten up
Find time for fun times. Whether it is getting together with
friends to talk and joke around, watching a comedy, or
finding things that you enjoy and make you laugh is
essential for your brain.
perduren.
Moverse
Encuentra el tiempo para salir. Si no
puedes agregar un entrenamiento
completo a tu apretada agenda,
problema.
Di ?no"
cosas, y no tomes
las cosas simples
por sentado.
Usualmente las
cosas simples son
las que son
realmente
esenciales para tu
felicidad. Es importante ser
agradecido.
Despejarse
Encuentra tiempo para divertirte. Ya
sea reuniéndote con amigos para
conversar y bromear, ver una comedia
o encontrar actividades que disfrutes y
que te hagan reír. Es esencial para tu
cerebro.
Evita quemarte saturando tu agenda.
mente.
