Yoga is the fountain of youth.
You’re only as young as your spine is flexible.”
With National Youth Day round the corner, it is
again that part of the year when people across the
country shout-out and celebrate the role of youth
in our nation’s development. Forming a major 65%
of India’s population, a day dedicated to this young
and enthusiastic populace is of great historical as
well as contemporary significance. Youth are the
pillars on which the social, economic and political
developments of a country stand on. They are the
tomorrow of the nation and with them at the helm of
affairs, the nation may suffer or prosper. Not to forget
the Youth Icon of India, Swami Vivekananda, whose
birthday is celebrated as National Youth day, this is
also a time to reflect and analyse not just the duties
and responsibilities of youngsters, but also the myriad
problems faced by them.
Being a youngster, and that too a responsible one, is
not easy. With unemployment, materialism, substance
abuse, and peer pressure sprinkled all over society,
the youth are indeed a troubled species. But like any
Youthwing ‘Yuva’
other problem, this one also has a solution, and it lies
in the 4 letter word-Y.O.G.A. As rightly said by a
veteran trainer-‘Yoga is not a religion, it is a science.
A science of well being, of youthfulness, of integrating
the mind, body and soul.’ The trend of seeing Yoga
as a very spiritual practice and hence “not cool”, is a
mere fallacy. Regular practice of yoga and meditation
improves physical strength, flexibility, balance and
focus. It also increases confidence and helps combat
issues like stress, anger, depression, anxiety and what
not. Yoga provides the urban youth with tools of self
discovery that foster hope, discipline and respect for
oneself and others. Above all, yoga helps one to be in
synconisation with oneself and gives a natural high.
India was once the richest country of the world, be
it resources, education, culture, trade or civilisation,
India was a name to reckon with in world history. We
still have the same natural resources, rich flora and
fauna, undiluted culture and the best brain power in
the world. All that’s lacking is the right leverage of
these resources to boost our economy. By directing
the youth force of our country in this direction, India
will soon become developed and a world leader. After
all, ‘The Golden Sparrow’ is not a forgotten dream;
it’s a goal worth working for. Like the great Swami
Vivekananda said- “let us arise, awake and stop- not
till this goal is reached”.
