Right: The Second Municipality of New
Orleans (now the American business
district) decided to construct a city hall for
its own use. Designed by James Gallier and
completed in 1849, the city hall asserts the
values of a Greek temple. It is rectangular,
with the narrow side facing the street. The
columns on the front of the building evoke
the majesty of the forest.
