I have a truly amazing book to
recommend to you called “The
Tattooist of Auschwitz” by
Heather Morris.
This is the story of one man’s
determination to survive and save
as many people as he can.
In April, 1942, Lale Sokolov is
transported to the concentration
camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
After being processed with hundreds
of others, his captors discover
he speaks several languages
which will be useful to them.
He is sent to work with Pepan
who trains him to be a tattooist,
marking the arms of other prisoners
with a number they can be
identified by. Lale does not want
to hurt anyone, but doing this job
will give him a room to sleep and
more rations, rather than being in a
block with many other men.
One day he is asked to tattoo
numbers on women, so he tries to
be very gentle and one time looks
up into the eyes of a woman, Gita,
and soon after that he finds her
again and so begins their friendship.
Lale takes great risks talking to
workers who come into the camp
to construct more buildings, and
with Gita and her friends’ help,
they bring him jewellery and money
taken from the prisoners and he
uses that to buy food that the
workers bring to him. He hides the
food and takes it to the men in his
old block to help them survive, as
well as sharing the food with the
girls that are helping him.
Although Lale witnesses terrible
atrocities, he vows to survive and
walk out of this dreadful place,
helping as many people as he can
to survive along the way.
This is a truly remarkable story
of bravery and compassion and
through it all, somehow, Lale manages
to find love under these most
terrible conditions. I hope you will
enjoy reading this book as much as
I did.
Happy Reading,
