THURROCK COMMUNITY CHORUS<br />
The Royal Opera House has been working in <strong>Thurrock</strong> since <strong>20</strong>06 and has a strong legacy of<br />
delivering exciting dramatic singing programmes inspired by the music and stories staged at the<br />
Royal Opera House in Covent Garden as well as community engagement projects which involve<br />
<strong>Thurrock</strong> schools, young people and the wider community. ROH <strong>Thurrock</strong>’s most long-standing<br />
programme is the Royal Opera House <strong>Thurrock</strong> Community Chorus, a group of 130 <strong>Thurrock</strong><br />
residents who come together every Monday evening to sing and perform together<br />
ABOUT THE PROJECT<br />
THE FLYING DUTCHMAN PROJECT<br />
We invite you to join us on the high seas to<br />
explore the swashbuckling world of ‘The Flying<br />
Dutchman’…<br />
Designed to help students discover one of<br />
opera’s great stories, learn some musical<br />
extracts, create characters and stage the<br />
drama whilst working as a team and building<br />
a heightened sense of community, just like a<br />
professional opera chorus.<br />
Teachers and students alike will find out more<br />
about the ROH <strong>Thurrock</strong> Community Chorus<br />
(ROHTCC), ROH’s flagship ensemble in<br />
<strong>Thurrock</strong>, why they are such a special<br />
community and how you can join them, as well<br />
as discovering some other singing<br />
opportunities available within <strong>Thurrock</strong>.<br />
The project begins with a CPD session, which<br />
provides teachers with the skills, resources and<br />
confidence to lead an in-school project based<br />
on The Flying Dutchman, supported by a<br />
digital resource.<br />
OPTIONAL CLOSE UP WORKSHOP<br />
For those teachers who attend the CPD,<br />
ROHTCC offer an option in-school singing<br />
workshop, led by an ROH practitioner, can<br />
help a class or group to develop their dramatic<br />
singing skills.<br />

THE FLYING DUTCHMAN<br />
Secondary Music Unit: KS3<br />
The Flying Dutchman resource is designed for<br />
KS3 music and drama students.<br />
DATES, LOCATION & FORMAT<br />
A CPD and teacher led project where teachers<br />
will gain the skills and resources required<br />
to deliver a unit of work (of up to 6-weeks) in<br />
class, aligned to the National Curriculum, based<br />
on opera ‘The Flying Dutchman’, supported by<br />
free-to-access digital resources<br />
Friday 14 February <strong>20</strong><strong>20</strong>, 12:30-15:00, High<br />
House Production Park, Purfleet<br />
OPTIONAL CLOSE UP WORKSHOP<br />
A 2.5 hour in-school workshop for up to 30<br />
students, led by an ROH practitioner, to<br />
support their work on The Flying Dutchman.<br />
LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />
• Students will develop their understanding<br />
of how music is created, produced and<br />
communicated including exploring pitch,<br />
duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture,<br />
structure and musical notation.<br />
• Students will learn to use their voices to<br />
compose music on their own/with others<br />
by performing and arranging their own<br />
versions of the Sailors’ Chorus<br />
• Students will gain an enhanced sense of<br />
“I thought I’d find opera boring today but actually it’s been quite<br />
interesting”<br />
community pride through singing, creating<br />
and performing work together<br />
• The project develops musical and dramatic<br />
skills alongside knowledge of the stories of<br />
opera<br />
• Teachers are able to promote singing<br />
pathways within <strong>Thurrock</strong><br />
• Teachers and students will gain enhanced<br />
understanding of healthy dramatic singing<br />
CROSS-CURRICULAR LINKS<br />
HISTORY<br />
Students will perform, listen to and evaluate<br />
music across a range of historical<br />
periods, genres, styles and traditions, by<br />
learning to sing an extract from the romantic<br />
period opera The Flying Dutchman by<br />
Wagner, and comparing this with traditional<br />
Sailors’ work songs of the 1800s.<br />
PSHCE<br />
Group singing has well-known benefits to<br />
personal wellbeing and mental health and<br />
group bonding / community-building which<br />
can be linked to whole school development.<br />
TEACHER COMMITMENT & TRAINING<br />
Teachers who attend the CPD are encouraged<br />
to work with The Flying Dutchman resource,<br />
available on the learning platform, as a full<br />
scheme of work.<br />
OPTIONAL CLOSE UP WORKSHOP<br />
This workshop can be shaped to suit teachers’<br />
needs, and can focus mainly on singing, or on<br />
drama. and the teacher will be required to plan<br />
this with the ROH artist, at least 2 weeks prior<br />
to the visit. This can be via Skype/phone or in<br />
person.<br />
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END?<br />
Schools will be signposted towards singing<br />
opportunities within <strong>Thurrock</strong> including the<br />
ROH <strong>Thurrock</strong> Community Chorus.<br />
Teachers will gain ideas for increasing the<br />
impact of their work in and through the arts,<br />
ranging from enjoyment and enrichment, to<br />
developing core learning and teaching.<br />
Schools may also opt for an Everybody Sing!<br />
session (see separate catalogue offer) which<br />
takes the project beyond the classroom to<br />
reach a larger group of students and<br />
potentially the wider school community<br />
