Board Overview The Many Faces of Experience On behalf of the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association, we are pleased to present the 2019 Annual Report. The theme for this year’s report is The Many Faces of Experience. The GWSA is not just a collection of retired older persons playing cards, throwing darts, playing pickleball, line dancing, and shooting a few photos. It is a dynamic collection of older persons demonstrating how to live our best lives. The GWSA is a volunteer-driven organization supported by staff from the City of Guelph and our own Community Support Services. Our 2700+ members bring diverse life and work experiences to our organization. We are fortunate to have members’ expertise to draw from as we pursue our mission to enable older adults to be active; to be involved; to make friends; and to age with dignity. GWSA members are active. They skate, ski, canoe, cycle, dance and walk. They paint, quilt, sing, write and travel. They read, mentor and learn. GWSA members are involved. GWSA members draw from their past experiences to help others. 242 members volunteered 25,760.25 hours in diverse tasks, including making crafts to sell in our gift shop, The Treasure Chest; providing computer mentoring to community seniors; delivering hot meals; leading exercise programs; making in-home visits to teach exercise; working the cash desk at The Evergreen Restaurant; driving housebound seniors to Outreach day for friendship and entertainment; and serving on committees to run your organization. When the popular Community Support Services program was threatened by Board Executives who have since resigned, GWSA members showed their considerable advocacy skills in support of their more vulnerable peers. Members rallied other members, the broader community and the media until their message could no longer be ignored. They wrote heartfelt messages speaking of the importance of the programs under threat. They held leaders to account for their decision, refuting their claims that GWSA membership lacked the skills, expertise and resources to manage a handful of employees for the popular programs. GWSA members spoke clearly. They wanted the CSS programs to continue - under new leadership if necessary. On behalf of GWSA members, we would like to express our gratitude for the support we receive from the donors listed on the back cover of this report. Two organizations have been particularly generous and constant during this tumultuous time. The City of Guelph has been a partner since the GWSA’s inception. Today’s GWSA continues to enjoy the benefits of this partnership through a generous agreement giving us access to the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre and other City facilities for our activities and services. City employees clean and maintain the facilities for our safety and enjoyment. City staff provide assistance co-ordinating our activities and our volunteer efforts. They serve on standing committees helping our organization run smoothly. They prepare delicious and nutritious meals in The Evergreen Restaurant.
The United Way first provided funding to the GWSA in 2011. Since that time, their ongoing generosity has led to today’s Community Support Services, a collection of programs designed to serve Guelph’s most vulnerable Seniors in the areas of nutrition, education, exercise and socialization. We are grateful for the United Way’s continued support of GWSA efforts to serve CSS clients and thank you for the trust you place in us. The GWSA Board of Directors remains committed to GWSA’s vision for a future that is inclusive, progressive, innovative and accountable in providing opportunities to the older adult community. We look forward to reporting on recent accomplishments and plans for the road ahead. Thank you for your continued involvement in and support of the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association.
