Under the supervision of The Queen’s Gallery<br />

Foundation, The Queen’s Gallery was launched<br />

at the initiatives of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit<br />

the Queen Mother, who also presided over the<br />

inauguration on <strong>August</strong> 9, 2003. Her Majesty<br />

contributed an initial amount of 7 million baht<br />

presented to her by Mr Chatri Sophonpanich,<br />

The committee chairman of the Bangkok Bank,<br />

to establish The Queen’s Gallery as a public space<br />

for art exhibitions.<br />

Acclaimed as Thailand’s first complete private<br />

gallery, The Queen’s Gallery has 5 floors, the 1 st -4 th<br />

for circulating exhibitions, and the 5 th for the gallery<br />

office, conference room and other purposes. An oil<br />

painting of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit in Thai Chakri<br />

costume, painted by Samarn Klangchaturas and<br />

presented to her by the Bank of Thailand, has been<br />

on display at the main lobby.<br />

The Queen’s Gallery has gained popularity<br />

among art lovers and become a highly-visited<br />

centre for art studies, exhibitions and tourism.<br />

In honour of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn<br />

Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Her Majesty<br />

Queen Sirikit, The Queen’s Gallery has organised<br />

an exhibition on Thai ancestors’ handicrafts on<br />

<strong>August</strong> 8-September 24, <strong>2019</strong>. Handicrafts on<br />

display in the exhibition are contributed by the<br />

Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of<br />

Thailand.<br />

In cooperation with the Bualuang Foundation<br />

and the Basic Education Commission, The Queen’s<br />

Gallery has played a vital role in organising workshops<br />

for elementary and secondary school art teachers<br />

nationwide. The Bualuang Foundation has also<br />

hosted contests of the traditional Thai paintings<br />

and contemporary paintings since 1974. Another<br />

category, the semi-traditional Thai painting, was<br />

added to the 15 th annual contest in 1991.<br />

Like in the previous years, art pieces in the<br />

<strong>2019</strong> Bualuang Paintings Contest were selected<br />

for an exhibition at The Queen’s Gallery. On display this year are<br />

56 art pieces including 9 prize-winning pieces. Apisit Aengchuan<br />

won the 1 st prize in the traditional Thai painting category for<br />

his work entitled ‘Nirvana.’ Winner of the 1 st prize in the Thai<br />

contemporary painting category was Chomrawee Suksom for his<br />

work entitled ‘The Symbol of Materialism.’ While no one won the<br />

1 st prize for the category of semi-traditional Thai paintings this<br />

year, 3 winners of the 3 rd prize were announced. One of them was<br />

Niroj Jarungjitvittawat for his art piece entitled ‘Considering the<br />

Breath (in-out).’<br />

Professor Emeritus Kamchorn Soonpongsri, chairman of the<br />

panel of judging committee, said the diversity of exquisite art<br />

pieces in the contest added toughness in judging.<br />

Art pieces that are not up to the standard are not entitled<br />

to the prizes, he said, adding that all categories of Bualuang<br />

painting awards are aimed at enhancing the artists’ spirits,<br />

creativity and skills.<br />

Khunying Chodchoy Sophonpanich, vice chairman of<br />

The Queen’s Gallery and director of the Bualuang Foundation,<br />

said winning artists received cash awards while Gold Award<br />

artists get sponsorship for an overseas trip to broaden their<br />

art experiences.<br />

They will help promote Thai arts in accordance with the<br />

initiatives of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother,<br />

who has always supported The Queen’s Gallery and Thai arts,<br />

added Khunying Chodchoy who is also chairperson of the Public<br />

Relations Sub-committee.<br />

• The 41 st Bualuang Paintings Exhibition is held daily from 10.00 am-07.00 pm<br />

(except <strong>We</strong>dnesdays) from September 30-November 26, <strong>2019</strong><br />

at The Queen’s Gallery, Ratchadamnoen Avenue.<br />
