Under the supervision of The Queen’s Gallery
Foundation, The Queen’s Gallery was launched
at the initiatives of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit
the Queen Mother, who also presided over the
inauguration on August 9, 2003. Her Majesty
contributed an initial amount of 7 million baht
presented to her by Mr Chatri Sophonpanich,
The committee chairman of the Bangkok Bank,
to establish The Queen’s Gallery as a public space
for art exhibitions.
Acclaimed as Thailand’s first complete private
gallery, The Queen’s Gallery has 5 floors, the 1 st -4 th
for circulating exhibitions, and the 5 th for the gallery
office, conference room and other purposes. An oil
painting of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit in Thai Chakri
costume, painted by Samarn Klangchaturas and
presented to her by the Bank of Thailand, has been
on display at the main lobby.
The Queen’s Gallery has gained popularity
among art lovers and become a highly-visited
centre for art studies, exhibitions and tourism.
In honour of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn
Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Her Majesty
Queen Sirikit, The Queen’s Gallery has organised
an exhibition on Thai ancestors’ handicrafts on
August 8-September 24, 2019. Handicrafts on
display in the exhibition are contributed by the
Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of
Thailand.
In cooperation with the Bualuang Foundation
and the Basic Education Commission, The Queen’s
Gallery has played a vital role in organising workshops
for elementary and secondary school art teachers
nationwide. The Bualuang Foundation has also
hosted contests of the traditional Thai paintings
and contemporary paintings since 1974. Another
category, the semi-traditional Thai painting, was
added to the 15 th annual contest in 1991.
Like in the previous years, art pieces in the
2019 Bualuang Paintings Contest were selected
for an exhibition at The Queen’s Gallery. On display this year are
56 art pieces including 9 prize-winning pieces. Apisit Aengchuan
won the 1 st prize in the traditional Thai painting category for
his work entitled ‘Nirvana.’ Winner of the 1 st prize in the Thai
contemporary painting category was Chomrawee Suksom for his
work entitled ‘The Symbol of Materialism.’ While no one won the
1 st prize for the category of semi-traditional Thai paintings this
year, 3 winners of the 3 rd prize were announced. One of them was
Niroj Jarungjitvittawat for his art piece entitled ‘Considering the
Breath (in-out).’
Professor Emeritus Kamchorn Soonpongsri, chairman of the
panel of judging committee, said the diversity of exquisite art
pieces in the contest added toughness in judging.
Art pieces that are not up to the standard are not entitled
to the prizes, he said, adding that all categories of Bualuang
painting awards are aimed at enhancing the artists’ spirits,
creativity and skills.
Khunying Chodchoy Sophonpanich, vice chairman of
The Queen’s Gallery and director of the Bualuang Foundation,
said winning artists received cash awards while Gold Award
artists get sponsorship for an overseas trip to broaden their
art experiences.
They will help promote Thai arts in accordance with the
initiatives of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother,
who has always supported The Queen’s Gallery and Thai arts,
added Khunying Chodchoy who is also chairperson of the Public
Relations Sub-committee.
