THE annual International<br />
Paella Competition was<br />
held in the Valencian town<br />
of Sueca last weekend,<br />
with the winner coming<br />
from a part of Spain not<br />
always associated with<br />
the iconic dish.<br />

Fuente Cerrada in the Aragon<br />

part of northern Spain better<br />
known for it’s stews and game<br />
than rice dishes. Nonetheless<br />
the effort of the team from<br />
the Teruel establishment was<br />
voted the best by the judges,<br />
with runner-up going to a<br />
Valencia City establishment,<br />
the Goya Gallery.<br />
This is the 59th such event<br />
and has become an increasingly<br />
important fixture in<br />
the culinary world, with the<br />
winner being able to expect a<br />
full reservation book off the<br />
back of the result.<br />
Exhumations start 80 years on<br />

THE solemn process of recovering<br />
the remains of eight<br />
local people killed by supporters<br />
of General Franco during<br />
the Spanish Civil War has begun<br />
in Castellon, in the north<br />
of the Valencian Community.<br />
The burial pit is thought to<br />
contain the bodies of the men,<br />
who were killed between April<br />
and May 1940. Once the remains<br />
are recovered they will<br />
be matched to the DNA of surviving<br />
relatives who will then<br />
rebury them in accordance<br />
with their own wishes.<br />
Family members of one of<br />
the victims, Vicente Ballester<br />
Forcada, have been attending<br />
the exhumation site as according<br />
to records and mapping his<br />
body will be the first to be found<br />
and brought to the surface.<br />
