Tostada language row
A SENIOR official in the
Valencian government
has become embroiled
in a row about the local
language after trying to
order a tostada and ham
in the city.
Aurora Mora, a chief of
staff in the ministry, ordered
the snack in Valenciano,
which the waitress
didn’t speak as she was
Argentinean.
The owner of the establishment,
Bar El Bojito,
said that Ms Mora became
needlessly rude and told
the woman she should
learn Valenciano if she
was going to live in this
part of the world.
Despite a server being
found who did speak the
dialect, Ms Mora asked for
by Simon Russell
a complaint form and later
took to social media.
However many people said
she was being unreasonable,
pointing out that the region
officially has two languages,
Castellano and Valenciano.
Cleaning contractor penalised
by Simon Russell
ALICANTE Council has
slashed €40,000 from the
firm paid to keep the city
clean after they failed to carry
out their duties properly in
August.
The council said that UTE
had breached their contract
by not cleaning roads properly,
something determined by inspection
teams. UTE’s services
have caused controversy in the
past, charging what was judged
to be extortionate amounts
for non-standard procedures
not laid down in the contract,
a practice that has now
been banned.
Also, due to the multicultural
nature of the city
and the presence of Spanish
visitors from outside the region,
the fact is that in most
commercial establishments
Castellano is the language
of choice.
