Chelmsford is growing and new homes are being added all the
time. To make sure our waste and recycling collection rounds are as
efficient and reliable as possible, the City Council has changed some
of its routes. These changes will make your collections greener and
better value for public money.
This is your new 2019-2020 collection calendar. It replaces your
current collection calendar - please recycle the old one.
The Affair
Friday 11 October 2019 7.30pm
A hilarious and thoroughly uplifting new play about relationships,
which has all the ingredients of a great comedy... clown, bouffon,
vaudeville and slapstick! With a sprinkle of drama and a splash of
tragedy, this cake... I mean pizza, is ready to eat.
The Affair is a wonderfully funny play... a laugh a minute, simply,
unmissable!
Our casanova, Gustavo, is getting ready to ask a very important
question, but not before he has checked everything on his ‘to do’ list.
After Daffadowndilly’s arrival, what is supposed to be a romantic
evening soon starts to spiral out of control; following a knock on the
door all reason turns to mayhem, and we are faced with a scenario
that leaves all three characters grappling for sanity.
The Affair is a timeless comedy that depicts the highs and lows of
relationships in a very funny way. With each character bringing a
different light to the story, there is plenty for the audience to relate to
and be amused by.
Tickets: £14.00. PREMIUM seats £2.00 extra
In and Out of Chekhov's Shorts
Friday 18 October 2019 1.00pm
Chekhov is one of the great writers of the 20th Century and these
tales, newly adapted and directed by Eliot Giuralarocca, remain as
memorable and bracing as jumping into a cold plunge pool after a hot
sauna!
Performed by a company of five and featuring original live music and
stylish ensemble story-telling, In and Out of Chekhov’s Shorts is an
exhilarating, fun and accessible romp through some of the best of
Chekhov’s short stories including The Lady with the Little Dog, The
Chemist’s Wife, At a Summer Villa, An Avenger and The Bear.
These wonderful hymns to the absurdity of everyday life, are by turns
hilarious, romantic, poignant, odd and memorable. They hold the
mirror up to the half-comic, half-painful experience of love and
relationships and create a world in which the tender and the
grotesque are inextricably linked. Ludicrous situations and larger than
life characters abound in an afternoon that simply cannot be missed!
HARVEST TIME AGAIN!
Students have resumed their education as Autumn has
arrived once more, nature making us well aware of the
change of season! We are fortunate in our land that we have
plenty in our shops to purchase for our needs; we are
moved by the devastation of so many places overseas and
the helplessness of so many people in those situations.
We may not be able to help them in a practical way, but we
can do something about the need in our own land.
Harvest is such a time when we can think of others, even if
we cannot assist at any other time of year by donating tins
and packages of food for those who live around us.
The Salvation Army in South Woodham Ferrers is holding a
Harvest Festival Service on Tuesday 1 October at 2pm in
the Evangelical Church (Hullbridge Rd.) to which you are
invited. Members attending will be bringing items of
grocery for the "Gateway" Foodbank run by the local
churches at The Salvation Army Wickford community
centre, and if anyone would like to contribute to this, we
shall be most appreciative, as there is a constant demand
for help. Of course, the local South Woodham Food bank is
always grateful for items too, it is an all year round demand.
(Clements Green Lane, New Life Church)
Also, at our service, Major Brian Miller, who is part of the
team that actually delivers the "Joy in a Box" gifts to the
children in Romania, will be receiving items and giving an
update on his visits, as he prepares for this year's delivery.
The service usually lasts for an hour, which enables those
needing to leave for school children, not to worry too much
about the time. We are so thankful for what we do have and
try to alleviate the distress of others if we can. Join us if you
are free that day. God bless you all - and thank you.
Breast cancer support group
moves to Broomfield Hospital
A support group for women who have experienced breast cancer
is moving to Broomfield Hospital.
The monthly group was previously based at the Helen Rollason
Centre in Springfield but will now meet at its new permanent home
at the hospital’s Breast unit (A104).
The next meeting will be on
Wednesday 18 September from
7.30 - 8.30pm. The group will be
joined by Julie Blanche of The
Bra Consultancy who helps
women who have undergone
surgery find underwear that suits
them.
Subsequent meetings will be
held every third Wednesday of
the month.
Heidi Barclay, clinical nurse
specialist in breast care, wants to
encourage as many women as
possible to attend.
“The group is for women who
have either recently been
diagnosed, are undergoing
treatment or have finished
treatment for a breast cancer.
“Women that come to the
support group can talk to people
who know what it feels like to be
told they have a cancer, who
understand the anxieties that
come with that, who have been
through treatment and can give
advice or reassurance on how to
cope with those treatments. It’s
peer-to-peer support.”
The group is open to all, not just
Broomfield patients, and there
will be breast care nurses in
attendance to answer questions
and make tea and coffee.
Heidi added: “Women are asked
not to bring friends or relatives
with them as we want them to
be able to speak honestly about
how they feel without worrying
about their loved ones being
upset about what’s discussed.
PARKINSON'S - A POSSIBLE ADVANCE. Science Daily reports that
" A drug used to treat enlarged prostates may also be able to slow
the progression of Parkinson's disease." The drug is terazocin
(sometimes known by other names such as Hytrin).
S.D. goes on to say that "The surprising finding, published in the
Journal of Clinical Investigation, is the result of an international
collaboration involving researchers in China and at the University
of Iowa that combines basic molecular biology with big data."
Don't let the jargon put you off - senior study author Michael Welsh
puts it more straightforwardly: "Current medicines can partially
alleviate some of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. But today
we have zero treatments that change the progressive course of
this neurodegenerative disease. That's a terrible state, because as
our population ages Parkinson's disease is going to become
increasingly common." He adds (whist jumping up and down on
the spot and grinning broadly): "I'm really excited about this
finding because I think it has the opportunity to change the lives
of people with Parkinson's disease (and possibly other types of
neurodegenerative disease.)"
The road to an effective 'disease modifying' treatment for
Parkinson's is littered with failures. Parkinson's UK says of another
big new idea: "Currently, there is no stem cell or cell transplant
therapy available that has been shown to slow or reverse
Parkinson’s, despite what you may read on the internet. But we
are making huge strides towards this becoming a reality."
This treatment is not here yet - but because terazocin is already
out there, there is a lot of safety data so it's just a case of
confirming aspects such as effectiveness. That said, I suspect men
with Parkinson's who have big prostates that are symptomatic and
need treatment may start hinting at their next medication review
that they might like to try terazocin. The trouble is, they're not the
only ones who've had this idea ... I imagine that, as you read this,
the 'pharmaceutical adviser' who tells docs what they can and
cannot prescribe 'on the NHS' is sending out a directive informing
GPs that they can't use the drug for this purpose until it's licensed.
WE CAN PUT A MAN ON THE MOON BUT WE CAN'T CURE
THE COMMON COLD is the usual put-down directed at us
medics. Back in 2017, Nicola Davison wrote in The Guardian: "The
common cold has the twin distinction of being both the world’s
most widespread infectious disease and one of the most elusive.
The name is a problem, for starters. In almost every Indo-European
language, one of the words for the disease relates to low
temperature, yet experiments have shown that low temperature
neither increases the likelihood of catching a cold, nor the severity
of symptoms. Then there is the “common” part, which seems to
imply that there is a single, indiscriminate pathogen at large. In
reality, more than 200 viruses provoke cold-like illness, each one
deploying its own peculiar chemical and genetic strategy to evade
the body’s defences.
At long last it rather looks as if we may be on the verge of a
significant advance. They say the way to stop people reading your
stuff is to use technical gobbledegook. Bear with me, though,
whilst I break all the rules ...
Under the title: "Enterovirus pathogenesis requires the host
methyltransferase SETD3" we read in the journal 'Nature
Microbiology' that: "Enteroviruses (EVs) comprise a large genus of
positive-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses whose members cause
a number of important and widespread human diseases, including
poliomyelitis, myocarditis, acute flaccid myelitis and the common
cold. How EVs co-opt cellular functions to promote replication and
FOCUS
spread is incompletely understood. Here, using genome-scale
CRISPR screens, we identify the actin histidine methyltransferase
SET domain containing 3 (SETD3) as critically important for viral
infection by a broad panel of EVs, including rhinoviruses and nonpolio
EVs increasingly linked to severe neurological disease such
as acute flaccid myelitis (EV-D68) and viral encephalitis (EV-A71).
We show that cytosolic SETD3, independent of its methylation
activity, is required for the RNA replication step in the viral life
cycle."
OK - so far so good - that's the easy bit - but how do they do this?
The boffins go on to explain in their own special language: "These
data suggest a role of the viral 2A protein in RNA replication
beyond facilitating proteolytic cleavage. Finally, we show that
SETD3 is essential for in vivo replication and pathogenesis in
multiple mouse models for EV infection, including CV-A10, EV-A71
and EV-D68. Our results reveal a crucial role of a host protein in
viral pathogenesis, and suggest targeting SETD3 as a potential
mechanism for controlling viral infections."
Got it? No? Me neither ... although I imagine the word ' cleavage'
will appear in the Sun's version of the story.
AN OCTOPUS makes an ideal comfy non-slip bathmat. Simply
scoop out any annoying unwanted bits and fix the tentacles to
the base of the bath. Steve Jefferson (VIZ)
The BBC's James Gallagher does a better job when it comes to
making this advance comprehensible: "Scientists think they have
found a way to stop the common cold and closely related viruses
which can cause paralysis. Instead of trying to attack them directly,
the researchers targeted an essential protein inside our cells which
the viruses need to replicate. The approach gave "complete
protection" in experiments on mice and human lung cells.
However, the US-based researchers are not ready for trials in
people."
Let me have a stab at explaining this. Because there are so many
different types of cold viruses and because they are so clever (they
constantly change their disguises in order to fool the body's
immune system and develop resistance to drugs) researchers are
now looking at ways of making them unwelcome visitors. JG takes
up the story: " This has led to the idea of "host-directed therapy"
- essentially making our bodies inhospitable for the cold viruses.
An individual virus does not have everything it needs to replicate.
Instead, it is dependent on infecting another cell and stealing some
of the parts inside." So the theory is that, if you fiddle about with
the innards of the cells (i.e. the basic units which make up the body)
- starving the viruses of the essential components they need - you
can stop them in their tracks. In practice when they tried this out
in genetically modified mice, they found that ALL the viruses were
unable to replicate inside cells which had the instructions for a
protein (called methyltransferase SETD3) switched off. In other
words ... SUCCESS!
They are not planning to manufacture genetically modified humans
- but there is a wheeze that might - just might turn this into a 'cure'
or (more likely, given that these viruses are so fiendishly clever) a
'partial cure' for what we laughingly call 'the common cold'
TOP TIP: "PHISHING scammers. Putting three exclamation marks
at the end of the subject of an email makes me less inclined to
believe it's actually from Barclay's Bank." Alez Corrigan (VIZ)
ACTION ON SUICIDES AMONG UNI STUDENTS: Former Health
Minister, Sir Norman Lamb, was on the Today prog this week
calling for a university mental health charter. ITV News reports:
"Students at the University of Bristol wait three times longer to
access mental health services than the national average, according
to new statistics.

A Freedom of Information (FoI) Act request revealed that many of
the 110 universities which responded said they did not record all
relevant key statistics, such as their budgets or waiting times.
Bristol, for example, came out badly but Cambridge University
came out very well. The universities rightly pointed out that they
can't deal with the issue of mental health alone - they need the
backup of the NHS which, as we all know, is often lacking when it
comes to adequate mental health facilities.
Sir Norman is quoted as saying: "Clearly some students are being
provision at some universities is intolerable. When the prevalence
of mental ill-health among students is increasing, it is completely
unacceptable that some universities are cutting funding. We should
be seeing sustained increases – after all, mental health support has
historically been way underfunded"
The BBC reported the sad case of Ceara Thacker, "who took her
own life in May 2018 while studying at Liverpool University after
her mental health deteriorated. She had struggled with it earlier
in her teenage years, and attempted suicide in the February before
her death." Her parents had seemingly not been informed of her
failed attempt. She was over 18 so I imagine the university had to
Graffiti Classics at the Cramphorn
Studio (15th Sept 2019)
Review by Cheryl Jennings
It was a pity that this event wasn’t better supported as I estimate
there were only around forty people in the audience, they suffered
at the hands of the band leader who mentioned it quite a few
times, blaming the lack of advertising in the theatre. Again, I’m
not sure how serious he was, perhaps that’s down to his Irish sense
of humour but it was a glorious late summer afternoon outside so
I’m sure that didn’t encourage people to spend it sitting in a
theatre.
This show is billed as an ‘all singing, all dancing musical comedy
cabaret show’ and I think at just an hour long, cabaret is probably
its true home, it would certainly be a novelty style of string quartet
to see at a wedding. I’m not sure about it being a ‘brilliant dance
show’ to quote the publicity material but it was worth seeing for
the music alone.
If you have recently had a fundraising
event, don’t forget to send in a report
and let us know how much you raised
and send in any photos to accompany it.
The Focus is the magazine to be noticed
in, going out to over 7,000 homes and
businesses.
Graffiti Classics was founded in 1997 by an Irishman, Cathal O’Duill
who still performs as the band leader and double bass player in
most of their UK shows. His aim was to bring classical music to
everyone, making it fun and anything but boring. This show is now
performed all over the world in small and large venues, private
functions, festivals and on cruises. There is apparently a team of
thirty experienced musicians, all fully trained in the act, so the cast
can change from venue to venue performing the same show.
The cast comprised a string quartet of two violins, a viola and a
double bass. On this occasion played by musicians from Lithuania,
Japan, England and Ireland and they were without doubt
accomplished and skilled in their art. The music was certainly
varied and lively, often played at breakneck speed which was very
impressive. They presented everything from Bach’s ‘Air on the G
String’ to ‘Lord of the Dance’, interspersed with humorous chatter
from the band leader who was keen to get the audience
participating whenever possible. He had everybody clapping in
time at appropriate moments to the ‘Can Can’, ‘The Devil Went to
Georgia’ and most other familiar pieces. He even taught the
audience how to pronounce and sing the lyrics to the Jewish folk
song ‘Hava Nagila’. This man worked hard all through to include
the audience, sometimes seeming at the end of his tether as they
continually got the simple clapping and responses wrong, the
audience took it all in good part.
The cast danced cleverly to many pieces, if not quite with abandon
– playing instruments at the same time was quite a feat. They even
attempted some singing which was brave of them and appreciated
by the audience although this was obviously not their forte. There
was an unusual moment when all four musicians ended up lying full
length on the floor and then managed to get back up to standing
all done elegantly whilst still playing – impressive core strength!
My favourite piece was without doubt ‘What Shall We Do With The
Drunken Sailor’. This began beautifully with the haunting sounds
of the strings portraying the wind in the rigging, the creaking of
the sailing ship and even the cry of the gulls, all brilliantly done to
great effect and finally morphing into the song itself which was
enthusiastically sung by the band leader accompanied by the
audience. The other musicians executed a hornpipe as they played
and I really enjoyed this number.
We are always looking for items of
interest to publish for our readers!
SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS
BOWLS CLUB
In the past week or two there has been a lot of information about
keeping healthy – to eat well and do some exercise, appearing in
national newspapers and our own Focus - Dr. John! One of the
suggestions for over-65s – but suitable for all ages I can assure you
– was playing bowls, a gentle exercise that helps maintain good
balance to reduce falls in old age.
SOUTH WOODHAM RUFC
London 2 North East - South Woodham Ferrers RFC 32 - Saffron
Walden 15
Saturday 14th September 2019
South Woodham Ferrers made the perfect start to their London 2
North East season with a bonus point home win against Saffron
Walden. A dominant display saw the lads score four tries against
a team that had beaten them in the four previous encounters. The
game was notable for the return of Stewart Whatling playing his
first game for the club in eight years and an off the bench debut
for Jake Knowles.
In the late summer sun, the game started brightly for the home
team with an early trademark score under the posts for Liam
Searle; Jamie Cox adding the extra 2. Sevie Hurrell could have
added a second score soon after but managed to drop the ball
when seemingly clean through. More home side pressure resulted
in a second score when they were awarded a penalty try following
a high tackle by the last defender on man of the match, scrum half
Kieran Ballinger. The tackle also brought about the first of five
yellow cards in what was never a dirty game.
SWF Bowls Club is testament to this; we have members of all ages,
from early forties with at least five or six regular players in their
late eighties –still showing the younger ones how to do it!
FINALS DAYS
At the end of a very enjoyable and successful competitive season,
playing all around the Chelmsford District, we came to our own
Club Finals – Mixed Pairs, Ladies’ and Men’s.
First was the Pairs – a true battle of the sexes with Grace Allam
and Helen Williams playing against Graeme Letch and Graham
Stables. It was a game of two halves – half in reasonably pleasant
weather and half in torrential rain – but on they played. The men
winning narrowly by 6 points after a very enjoyable match. Well
done the Boys!
Despite being a man down the visitors then enjoyed a period of
attacking dominance during which the ref evened up the teams by
yellow carding Jamie Cox for a shoulder charge. In their second
visit into the Woodham 22 Saffron Walden scored the first of their
two tries. Soon after the visitors were awarded a penalty which
was converted following Jack Reeve’s yellow card, for not
releasing.
With home side down to 13 men you might have expected Saffron
Walden to draw clear but as the half drew to a close it was
Woodham who scored next with a converted penalty from Terry
Stiffell. In the closing minutes of the half Woodhams forwards
began to take full control of the game as they began to boss the
set piece with fine scrummaging.
Half time came with the score at 17 point to 10 in favour of the
home side.
In the second half Woodham showed some real promise with some
fine running play behind a dominant pack. The ball was allowed to
do the work as Woodham stretched the Saffron Walden defence
allowing Jack Reeve to run in Woodhams third try of the day.
A missed conversion and shortly after a missed penalty could have
seen the home side home and dry early in the half but it was the
visitors who scored next. Saffron Walden were awarded a penalty
against the run of play and capitalised by kicking deep into the
Woodham 22. They scored a well worked push over try from the
resulting line out.
Another day and beautiful autumn sunshine for the Ladies’ and
Men’s. Again two very good games between Helen Williams and
Chris Wood, Ian Hennessey and Glen Williams. Chris took the
Ladies’ trophy and Ian the Men’s. Congratulations to all for
getting to the finals.
Although the competitive season is over, we continue to use our
green for club games and will do until bad weather stops us, so if
you are thinking of giving bowls a go, do get in touch.
www.swfbowlsclub.org.uk
swfbowlsclub@talktalk.net
01245 324833
Woodham were soon back in control with two further scores; a
penalty converted by Alex Baker and a fine try from close range
from Tate Holliday.
The final period of the game was notable for two further yellow
cards. The first, a high tackle, for Saffron Walden and the second
for Neil Gittos who was unlucky to have a tackled player fall into
him, being pinged for a no arms tackle!! Neil had just enjoyed
making his annual pass of the season.
The final whistle was blown with the home side on 32 points and
the visitors well beaten on 15.
Woodham showed some real promise in the season opener and
with a strong squad they must be looking forward to more success
in the months to come.
