When youtake the time to stop me when I am out and about and tell me you readmy column, it always means so much to me.I guess the heading of this month’s column might be a bit misleadingbecause, of course, Old Yeller himself doesn’t “live on” since this movieis 63 years old - but what just happened was such a sweet surprise.I was notified that Old Yeller was inducted into the National FilmRegistry of the Library of Congress!I know I’ve writtenabout Old Yeller beforeand I have also writtenabout my friend TommyKirk. He is the boy who“shot” Old Yeller.Tommy and I are theonly two people whoare still alive from themaking of this movie.He also lives inLas Vegas and we gettogether often to havedinner.I am blessed to callhim my friend and we are bothhonored to have been a partof such an iconic film. Nowthat it’s a part of the Libraryof Congress, it will forever beregistered and will live onforever.Recently I was at anautograph show and wastalking about Old Yeller. Imentioned that Tommy and Iare still friends after allthese years, when a littlegirl in the audienceraised her hand to ask aquestion.She said, “Isn’t thatthe boy who shot OldYeller?” I answered,“Yes, Honey” to whichshe replied, “Well thenhow can you still befriends with him??!” Outof the mouth of babes...Until next timeremember, If you can rise above the storm, you will find the sunshine.Beverly Washburn graced the silver screen as a child actress andis the author of Reel Tears.
