THE NED,
CITY OF LONDON
There can be few places in London that can create both an
atmosphere of celebration and intimacy - a place to rejoice in
big birthdays and somewhere to whisper in your lover's ear at
your corner table. Never has one venue had it all.
This former bank’s high ceilings and acres of marble, coupled
with banquettes of leather and grand hall-esque wooden tables,
exude pure glamour - this exuberant style is echoed in the
bedrooms, with 1920s styling nodding to the hotel's former life,
but with added home comforts - you'll feel so cosseted, you'll
never want to leave.
Visiting the Ned is an event - I've been four times and still not
managed to take in the full works of the offerings. It boasts ten
restaurants from Paris to New York, via the Asian Pacific, each
exemplifying the same standards of excellence.
Residency overnight at The Ned also lets you join an illustrious
club, with access to Soho members-only areas of the hotel.
Upstairs at The Ned is a summer hotspot with its rooftop pool
and panoramic views of the city, whilst the Vault bar in the
Downstairs area is one of the coolest drinking establishments
in London - occupying the underbelly of the building and still
furnished with its 16-inch thick door and lined with more than
3,000 original safety deposit boxes.
If you're at The Ned for the weekend, a must is the famous
Sunday Feast, occupying the whole of Millie's restaurant. A
cornucopia in every sense of the word, you'll dine on lobster,
Ottolenghi-worthy salads, roasted joints of meat and a
spectacular banquet of puds. You can eat yourself into a moment
of quiet reflection as you take in the rest of the scene, with live
jazz playing around you.
