scene. In some ways, I am 

still outraged by it. But I 

often felt sadder for the 

older man. Later I read 

his obituary, son of a slave 

it said. I cried to my dad 

when he told me about 

the old man's life.

Bloomberg is alleged 

to have said by Warren. 

That will resonate with 

all the victims of toxic 

male aggression that 

many of us have felt.

an indecent way. In one 

way or another all our 

lives. We can ignore it 

and even pretend it is 

something else. But it 

stops momentum, at 

best and at worst it's like 

a knife in the eye. She 

knows and she won't let it 

go unnoticed.

hope of the rainbow 

in celebration of the 

Supreme Court ruling on

Winner Announced in Desert Gay Tourism Guild 

Poster and T-Shirt Contest. 

Palm Springs, CA - February 23, 2020 - 

The Desert Gay Tourism Guild (DGTG) is 

pleased to announce that Danny Warhole 

has won its first annual Greater Palm Springs 

Play Gay, Stay Gay Poster & T-Shirt Contest. 

“The Board voted unanimously for Danny’s 

design,” said Michael C. Green, DGTG 

President. “It was, by far, the clearest 

representation of what we were trying to 

achieve as we celebrate fifty years of LGBTQ 

hospitality in the greater Palm Springs area. 

Warhole submitted both a color and a black 

and white design, and the DGTG Board 

elected to use both of them; one for the full 

color poster and the other for the t-shirt 

design, which will be executed on one color. 

“Both designs were uniquely 'Palm Springs’,” 

said Bill Sanderson, DGTG Vice-President. 

“And both had particular aspects that made 

them ideal for our two applications. They are 

related, but slightly different in their focus. 

And since the design features a couple, we 

asked Danny to create one with a male couple 

and another with a female couple." 

The artist and contest winner, Danny 

Warhole, was born and raised in the Midwest 

(Pittsburgh and suburban Detroit), and 

currently lives in Chicago with his husband, 

Joe. As a teenager, Danny was awed by Andy 

Warhol, whose art was his first exposure to 

homosexuality in popular culture. Today, 

Danny continues to take inspiration from 

Warhol and from the figure artwork of others 

such as John Singer Sargent, Tom of Finland

and Mark Beard, and from photographers 

such as Tom Bianchi. His inspiration for 

the DGTG winning design comes from his 

love for Palm Springs, and out of a longing 

to see more depictions of LGBT persons in 

Palm Springs’ thriving art scene. For Danny, 

art isn’t work, it’s play. It’s a good day if his 

subject feels beautiful, and those who view 

it feel represented in the world. Danny 

primarily showcases his work on Instagram:

Warhole will receive $500 for his winning 

design, as well as an all expense paid trip to 

Palm Springs, where he and his husband will 

stay at the popular Santiago Resort. Other 

details of the visit are still being planned, 

but an artist reception and signing will take 

place at the Palm Springs Cultural Center on 

Wednesday, April 15th, and continue with 

events throughout the weekend. 

About the Desert Gay Tourism Guild: The 

Desert Gay Tourism Guild (DGTG) is a 

collection of LGBTQ owned and operated 

businesses in greater Palm Springs, 

California that are dedicated to bringing 

the local tourism business community 

together to work cooperatively in marketing 

and advertising efforts in order to increase 

tourism for the Greater Palm Springs

MODERNISM WEEK 2020 - PALM SPRINGS ALEXANDER HOMES

Palm Springs is known today as the 

epicenter for midcentury modern 

homes. It was in the early 1950's that 

the midcentury modern style of homes 

began to evolve here. There were 

about 2,500 homes built throughout 

the area. The homes were designed 

and constructed to accommodate a 

midrange affordable priced home. They 

were constructed by the Alexander 

Construction Company owned by 

Bob Alexander. The design of the 

homes was created by Palmer & Krisel 

architecture firm of Los Angeles. 

George Alexander, Bob's father was 

co-owner of the construction company. 

One of the first projects using the 

modern design elements was the 

Ocotillo Lodge on Highway 111. A 

special suite was designed in the lodge 

that included a private swimming pool 

and was the home of George and his 

wife Jimmie. 

At the time that the Alexanders arrived 

in Palm Springs, there were few tract 

home developments happening using 

mass-produced technology. The 

demand for housing had increased 

incrementally following WWII. Bob 

Alexander was a careful planner. He 

had a warehouse built on San Rafiel 


Drive west of Indian Canyon Road to store 

supplies needed for multiple building sites 

to prevent delays in construction. 

The Palmer Krisel architects designed 

two primary floor plans for the homes 

that could be reposition in different 

directions to adapt to different views, have 

varied roof designs, and face in different 

directions to alleviate the appearance of 

repetitiveness. Alexander Construction 

built more than 12 tracts throughout Palm 

Springs in areas such as Twin Palms, Vista 

Las Palmas, and Racquet Club Road. The 

butterfly roof design became a unique 

design the distinguished the homes but 

they also had flat and gabled roofs. 

Projects such as a planned condominium 

development and new ideas for the Desert 

Inn Resort were among the plans that were 

halted. 

Bob and Helen Alexander had a home 

built for them that was featured as "the 

house of tomorrow". It was purchased by 

Elvis Presley and became known as the 

Elvis Presley Honeymoon house which is a 

visitors exhibit today. 

This year Modernism Week is honoring 

The Alexanders for their contribution to 

the modern architectural designs built in 

the Palm Springs area. 

Bob and Helene Alexander had a home 

built for them that was featured as" the 

house of tomorrow" was later purchased by 

Elvis Presly and is now known as the Elvis 

Presly Honeymoon house. 

In 1962, Look magazine featured a multipage 

spread on the Alexander homes 

and the Palmer Krisel architectural firm. 

This provided wide recognition of the 

development of the modernism style on 

a national basis. In 1965 George, Jimmie, 

Bob and his wife Helene were killed 

in a chartered jet that crashed into the 

mountains on the way to L.A. This halted 

the development of further projects that 

had been planned by the Alexanders.

VA partners with Verizon, Medivis and 

Microsoft to advance health care services 

for Veterans 

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of 

Veterans Affairs (VA) partnered with Verizon, 

Medivis and Microsoft, effective Feb. 

12, as part of its efforts to deliver Veterans 

VA’s first advanced, 5G-enabled, clinical 

care system at the VA Palo Alto Health 

Care System. 

The public-private partnership, Project 

Convergence, will be led by VA’s National 

Center for Collaborative Health Care Innovation 

and work to help identify potential 

clinical uses for technology that combine 

emerging health care innovations with 5G 

capabilities. 

“Last year, President Trump challenged 

America to be among the first to provide 

5G wireless services, and VA met that 

challenge,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. 

“Our hospital in Palo Alto, California 

is currently one of only a handful of 5G 

enabled health facilities in the world. We’re 

excited to use this hands-on opportunity to 

work with our partners to develop foundational 

practices and deploy advanced medical 

solutions to serve our nation’s Veterans.” 

Project Convergence will unveil and 

demonstrate initial clinical uses of the combined 

technology at the upcoming Health 

Information and Management Systems 

Society conference in Orlando, Florida, 

March 9-13. 

According to an AP story Tony Rankins, a 

formerly homeless, drug-addicted Army 

veteran, got a standing ovation at the State 

of the Union after President Donald Trump 

described how he turned his life around 

thanks to a construction job at a company 

using the administration’s “Opportunity 

Zone” tax breaks targeting poor neighborhoods. 

Caution Trump fake news ahead! 

Rankins, who indeed moved out of his car 

and into an apartment since landing a job 

refurbishing a Nashville hotel two years 

ago, doesn’t work at a site taking advantage 

of the breaks and never has done so. In fact, 

he started that job four months before the 

Treasury Department published its final list 

of neighborhoods eligible for the breaks. 

And the hotel where he worked couldn’t 

benefit even now because it’s an area that 

didn’t make the cut.
