TAHITIWhatmakes a destination is the people and theTahitian people have been welcoming visitors to theirislands since Captain Blyth. Tahitians are proud of theircultural heritage. They love to celebrate their customsthrough artwork, song, and dance. They are warm spirited.As a people they possess an innocent and carefree spirit.Their philosophy, aita pea pea, which means, "not to worry,"is truly the Tahitian way of life. Tahiti is a water culture;everyone surfs, paddleboards, sails or Va’a (outriggerkayak). The lagoons are safe and protected from wind andwaves, but if you are looking for surf on the other side of thereef you'll find some of the best waves in the world.Get a tattooTattoo – is originally derived from the Tahitianword Tatau, it was an art form to express identityand personality. Nearly everyone you meet inTahiti has a tattoo; some have deep meaningsome just for show. If you are thinking of gettinga tattoo, Tahiti is the place to get it. Allow thetattooist to help design your tattoo, don’t goin with a dolphin and ask to have it on yourankle. There are several well-known tattooists inPape’ete. I suggest you book in advance or assoon as you arrive - don’t wait till the last day tobook because you won’t get in. However, haveyour tattoo late in your vacation you can’t get itwet and will need to keep it out of the sun.ESCAPE!Eat at the RoulottesAt night, just on dark ,there emerges a rangeof foods trucks called roulotte. These are not juststreet vendors, these are legitimate places toeat and you will note that some are very full oflocals. The trick to choosing the right one, like allrestaurants, go where the locals go. The averagemeal price is around NZ$20.00.Eat at the Blue BananaI am not a great ‘foodie’ but there is onerestaurant in Tahiti called The Blue Banana, it ison the edge of the lagoon just up the road fromthe Manava hotel. The staff are great, the view isawesome but the food is amazing, don’t look atthe menu, take my advice just order the "Raw FishThree Ways". It is superb, if you don’t like raw fishyou are in the wrong country.Visit TeahupooEven if you do not surf go to Teahupoo. Itis about an hour’s drive from the main city ofPape'ete (the road is crazy so take care). It’scalled the end of the road for a reason, it’s theend of the road, but just before you get to thetownship of Teahupoo there is a small marinaon the right hand side. If you pull in, therewill be a marine taxi that will take you out tothe surf break. As long as it is not crazy windythere will be people surfing and if you are luckyenough to see it on a big day just watchingpeople surf Teahupoo is an experience you willnot forget.Get out on the waterWherever you go in Tahiti there is watereverywhere and most hotels have sportsequipment for hire from paddleboards to jetskis. This type of equipment is expensive inTahiti so make sure that you are well insuredjust in case. Stay well within the lagoon - don’tbe tempted to head to the pass without a guide- the current is strong and you’ll be outside thelagoon before you know it.Swim and feed the StingrayI know if sounds a bit ho hum, but in Tahitiit is taken to a new level. The closest placesto do it in the main island is Moorea which isabout 30 mins by boat. They have special rayfeeding tours which you can join or simply hire apaddleboard and paddle out yourself. You get inthe water with the stingray and they approachfor food.
