I loved the completely typically British
response in raising over £30million for
the NHS, to Captain (now Sir Colonel)
Tom and others, fantastic support from
fantastic people.
As we take steps to rebuild our lives in
the weeks and months to come, how
can we develop the positives from our
experience, and minimise the negatives?
Get involved with your community!
Support local events and charities.
Visit local shops and amenities, (when
they re-open.)
Join local groups, you don’t need to join
a choir online, we have real face to face
ones in the area, theatre groups, golf,
tennis, cricket clubs, horticultural and
walking groups, the list goes on and on.
This magazine is full of local businesses,
please support them as much as you
possibly can.
If we get the local economy going first,
the National one will follow.
Support local businesses, support local
groups and support the NHS.

Vicky bakes for
patients and staff
at the Hospice
After lockdown was announced in March
and I was continuing to go out to work
as a key worker, I decided I wanted to
give a little something back to my local
community which was outside my usual
work environment.
Springhill Hospice
immediately came
to mind and my
obvious choice as
in 2003 my father
in law spent his
last weeks under
the wonderful
care of the staff
there. After having
spoken to Catering
Manager Jaki
Hargreaves, I decided I would bake twice
a week for both patients and staff and
this has made me feel that I am making a
difference albeit ‘small to everyone within
the Hospice.
Each time I deliver the cakes I feel part
of the Hospice community and get a
sense of satisfaction from the fact that
I’m making a difference. Volunteering
is such a rewarding and fun experience
and I would recommend it to all ages and
abilities. It also provides a great opportunity
to meet new people and I’m particularly
grateful to Jaki who has made me feel very
appreciated and valued.
As a family who witnessed this first hand,
I can honestly say that Springhill Hospice
couldn’t be a more caring, compassionate,
friendly, and welcoming environment for
both inpatients and their families. For
as long as they need me, I will continue
to bake and help to put a small smile on
someone’s face.
