HK Youth Science, Technology &

Innovation Competition

We were delighted that one of our primary students recently achieved First Place in Research at the HK Youth Science,

Technology and Innovation Competition for his project “Catching More of the Sun”. Yet another example of a young

scientist who is adapting to change by taking an experimental approach to the environment which he observes.

The aim of my research project was to find a way to improve the power output of solar panels,

through the application of filters, different cooling treatments and also reflectors. One of the

challenges I encountered when performing the experiment was maintaining consistent light

intensity as the sun is ever changing. To workaround this, I had to complete the experiment very

quickly, sometimes needing to restart because of the sudden changes in sunlight. The most

rewarding experience was presenting in front of the judging panel of university professors. It

made me nervous but I told myself to treat it like any other presentation. Fortunately, every

question I was asked was within my scope of knowledge. In the end, I was very fortunate and

proud to receive the award for first place. Thank you to my parents, teachers and classmates

for supporting me.
