July 7 th - AT THE EDGE OF RUSSIA
In collaboration with Estonian Television we once again offer to
watch touching and deep documentaries all over Estonia, rate them
and choose the best for the Estonian People’s Award.
The beautiful West Estonian blanket will be given to the winner by
the Minister of Culture Rein Lang as a result of televoting in the late
night of July 7th. The theme for this summer is Life in Russia. Selected
films are not at all about life in the Kremlin or on the protestive streets,
of which the news are enlightening the audience well enough. The
docs of competition will take the spectators to the daily routine of
ordinary people where the small world will suddenly take enourmous
dimensions. Because human sorrow and joy, compassion and yearning
for happiness are characteristic not just to Russians.
To help the author of Your favorite film to win the Estonian People’s
Award, please, call after the last broadcast on the phone number 1182
and give Your vote!
Between all callers we draw the prize a Tallink cruise for two persons
to Aland.
900 DAYS
77 min. 2011, The Netherlands (filmed in Russia)
Is it better to acknowledge the almost unpalatable truth, or to embrace the comfort of a
myth? From September 1941 until January 1944, Leningrad was sieged and blockaded by the
Nazi army. Nearly three million inhabitants were trapped inside the city like rats. In subzero
temperatures the people had to eat glue, leather soles, cats, and sometimes even their fellow
human beings. After 900 days, almost a million people had died. All this took place in a country
where propaganda was more important than the truth. For decades afterwards the survivors
were forbidden to speak about what had happened to them so that the heroic myth of the
“land of victors” would not be undermined. And now, the myth is being revived. What starts
as a film about personal testimonies of the blockade of Leningrad gradually turns into an epic
story about how censorship, propaganda and fear get a grip on the memories of the main
characters. A struggle that is still ongoing today.
900 PÄEVA
Režissöör Jessica Gorter (Holland, filmitud Venemaal)
Haarav-dramaatiline lugu Leningradi blokaadist, kus enam kui kolmest miljonist elanikust nälgis
surnuks iga kolmas ehk teisisõnu – hukkus üle miljoni inimese. Ei aidanud riiklik vale piisavate
toiduvarude kohta ega uimastav propaganda, ellujäämise nimel sõid meeleheitel inimesed isegi
lahkunud omaste liha. Venemaa ajalugu heroiseeriv propaganda püüab täna taastada illusiooni,
et Leningradi blokaad polnud mitte stalinistide hoolimatusest põhjustatud suur tragöödia, vaid
hoopis suur patriootlik kangelastegu.
Koostöös Eesti Televisiooniga pakume kogu Eestimaale taas
võimalust vaadata haaravaid ning sügava sisuga dokfilme, hinnata
neid ning valida parim Eesti Rahva Auhinnale. Kauni Lääne-Eesti
kirjadega auhinnateki annab võitjale üle kultuuriminister Rein Lang 7.
juuli hilisõhtul toimuva telehääletuse järel. Sellesuviseks teemaks on elu
Venemaal.
