THE WELL: WATER VOICES FROM ETHIOPIA

This is the Horn of Africa, a region of the world that is periodically shocked by terrible droughts.
Each year, in the dry Oromia lowlands (South of Ethiopia) when the drought is coming the
Borana herders gather with their livestock, after days and days of walk, around their secular
astonishing “singing” wells. With its strong photography and its epic narration, the film follows
their life during a whole dry season, showing a unique traditional water management system
that allows to manage water as the property and right of everyone, without any money being
exchanged.

Lõuna-Etioopiat tabavad sageli kohutavad põuad. Siis ei jää borana karjustel muud üle, kui
ajada oma karjad nn “laulvate kaevude” juurde. Film uurib pärimusi, mille järgi vesi on olnud
juba aegade algusest peale inimeste ühisomandis ning olnud kaitstud igamehe õigusega teda
kasutada. Keegi ei tohi võtta raha vee eest, see oleks vastuolus borana karjuste põhimõtete ja
vaadetega elule.

A magical tale, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, and at other times mocking. It’s a film about
male friendship, male sensitivity. The story takes place in the small Czukty village, in Mazury
Garbate region. Wieslaw Boltryk is a wandering artist by choice. For him Czukty is an adopted
homeland. He is expected in every house. The documentary features songs by the poet, singer and
songwriter Andrzej Garczarek. His songs ask timeless questions like: Is the Tree of Knowledge
necessarily good or necessarily evil?
