<strong>documentary</strong> art, members of the jury for the XXVI Pärnu<br />

Why should youth choose the hard profession of a<br />

documentarist?<br />

Their answers were honest <strong>and</strong> outspoken.<br />

Documentary <strong>film</strong> feeds unexceptionally on the flow of life. It depends<br />

on the <strong>film</strong> maker if the result of this material will have any idea of an<br />

author <strong>and</strong> worth as a document. Then it will be watched with much<br />

more greater interest than feature <strong>film</strong>, in the future, for sure.<br />

If you evaluate your independence in your work, that’s what making a<br />

<strong>documentary</strong> offers in large quantities, then just give it a start!<br />

Dokumentaal<strong>film</strong> toitub er<strong>and</strong>itult elu kulgemisest. Sõltub tegijast, kas<br />

sellest ainesest tehtul saab olema ka autorimõtet ja dokumendiväärtust. Siis<br />

vaadatakse seda suurema huviga kui mängu<strong>film</strong>i, tulevikus kindlasti.<br />

Kui hindate selles töös iseseisvustunnet, mida dok<strong>film</strong>i tegemine ohtralt<br />

pakub, siis hakake aga pihta!<br />

SÕNA ON TEIL, HEAD ŽÜRIILIIKMED!<br />

Esitasime kodumaise <strong>film</strong>idokumentalistika elavatele<br />

klassikutele, XXVI Pärnu <strong>film</strong>i<strong>festival</strong>i žürii liikmetele<br />

kaks pärimist:<br />

1. Mida võluvat olete leidnud dok<strong>film</strong>ide loomises?<br />

2.<br />

Miks peaks noor inimene valima dokumentalisti raske<br />

elukutse?<br />

Vastused tulid ausad ning avameelsed.<br />

Orientalist <strong>and</strong> translator Halj<strong>and</strong> Udam has said that there are two competitors in art –<br />

the truth <strong>and</strong> vanity whereas vanity usually wins. Although vanity may be very interesting<br />

visually, the truth is much more valuable in the longer perspective. Hence the fascination<br />

<strong>and</strong> pains creating a <strong>documentary</strong> are connected to the truth. Or to something that the<br />

author thinks is the truth due to his/her vanity.<br />

All the answers coming to my mind seem to be vain just like badly staged scenes in a<br />

<strong>documentary</strong> <strong>film</strong> <strong>and</strong> are not worth to be written down.<br />

There is no single answer but the main thing has always been interest<br />

in a human being. The most absorbing has been <strong>and</strong> is till today the<br />

preparation time to each <strong>film</strong>, collection of material. It may last for<br />

years until you find the right clew.<br />

I teach the simple basics of <strong>film</strong> art at local high school - in Pärnu<br />

Ühisgümnaasium. I have tried to implant to my students – do not start<br />

shooting before you haven’t got the clear picture. Do lay more stress<br />

on preparation <strong>and</strong> you’ll discover that at a certain point the story will<br />

start to unfurl itself. That is a blessing for a <strong>film</strong> maker. It does not<br />

happen very often but sometimes it does.<br />

Üht vastust pole, aga peamine on olnud ikka huvi inimese vastu.<br />

Kõige köitvam on olnud ja on tänaseni igale uuele <strong>film</strong>ile eelnev<br />

ettevalmistusaeg, materjali kogumine. Teinekord kestab see aastaid<br />

kuni õige niidiotsa leiad.<br />

Õpetan Pärnu Ühisgümnaasiumis <strong>film</strong>ikunsti lihtsamaid aluseid. Olen<br />

oma õpilastele püüdnud sisestada - ärge alustage <strong>film</strong>imist enne, kui<br />

endal pilt selge on. Nähke eeltööga pisut rohkem vaeva ja te avastate,<br />

et lugu hakkab ühel hetkel end ise lahti kerima. See on <strong>film</strong>itegijale<br />

õnnis tunne. Väga tihti seda ei juhtu, aga mõnikord küll.<br />

Orientalist ja tõlkija Halj<strong>and</strong> Udam on kunagi öelnud, et kunstis võistlevad tõde ja edevus,<br />

kusjuures enamasti edevus võidab. Kuigi edevus võib olla visuaalselt väga huvitav, on<br />

tõde pikemas perspektiivis väärtuslikum. Dokumentaal<strong>film</strong>i loomise võlud ja vaevad ongi<br />

seotud tõega. Või sellega, mida autor oma edevuses tõeks peab.<br />

Kõik pähe tulnud vastused tunduvad edevad nagu halvasti lavastatud stseenid dok<strong>film</strong>is<br />

ega vääri kirjapanemist.
