BAD WEATHER
82 min. 2011, Germany/UK (filmed in Bangladesh)
Banishanta Island is made up of a community of sex workers. Living on a tiny sliver of land 100
meters long and only ten meters wide in the Bay of Bengal, south Bangladesh, this community
survives at the frontline of climate change. The rising river, soil erosion and frequent cyclones
are slowly destroying what is left of the island. Razia, Khadija and Shefali, three of the last 65
women left living there, are in a battle for their homes, the future of their families, and even
their quest for true love. As they strive to hold onto their livelihood, time is running out. Soon
the whole of Banishanta will be totally submerged under water, making it one of the first real
casualties of the shifting global environment.
HALB ILM
Režissöör Giovanni Giommi (Saksa/Inglise, filmitud Bangladeshis)
Ühel maailma väikseimal saarel, mis on vaid 100 meetrit pikk ning 10 meetrit lai, elab
seksitöötajate kogukond. Siin, Bengaali lahes, on 65 prostituudi elu juuksekarva otsas. Kliima
soojenemisega sagenevad tormid, mis võib lõbumajade saare Banishanta sootumaks minema
uhtuda.
kogukonnale.
SKYDANCER
72 min. 2011, USA/Germany
The Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center: for more than 120
years, Mohawk ironworkers have raised America’s modern cityscapes. They are called ‘sky walkers’
because they walk fearlessly atop steel beams just a foot wide, high above the city. Who are these
Mohawk sky walkers? What is their secret for overcoming fear? Has ‘sky walking’ replaced an
ancient rite of passage? Or is it the pure need to adapt in order to survive? And what is their life
really like, when every Friday at quitting time, they jump in their cars and make the eight-hour
drive up north to their families on the reservation?
SKYDANCER is a feature length documentary that takes a provocative look at Indian life
in the 21st century: from the fragile hierarchy on top of the breath-taking steel structures in
New York City to life ‘on the Rez’ where problems like unemployment and crime make it hard
to see the pristine beauty of the surrounding lands. The film allows exceptional access to the
lives of these ironworkers and in the process offers an intriguingly different perspective on
contemporary Native Americans.
TAEVATANTSIJA
Režissöör Katja Esson (USA/Saksamaa)
Brooklyni sild, Empire State Building, Maailma Kaubanduskeskus ning paljud teised New
Yorgi kuulsad kõrgehitised on kerkinud Mohawk´i indiaanlaste kätetööna. Neid on hüütud
taevaskõndijateks, sest eriline tasakaalutunne ning kõrgusekartmatus lubab mohawkidel vabalt
kõndida ülikõrgetel teraskonstruktsioonidel ilma julgestusvahenditega. Ahhetamapanevad
võtted pilvelõhkujate ehitamiselt vahelduvad indiaanlaste koduse elu ja esivanemate folkloori
ning uskumuste jätkamisega. Film sellest, kuidas põlisrahvas on suutnud kohaneda moodsa
tsivilisatsiooniga ning samas hoida elus oma keelt ning kultuuri.
TEA OR ELECTRICITY
93min. 2012, Belgium (filmed in Morocco)
The documentary tells an epic story of the implementation of electricity in a tiny isolated
village amidst of the Moroccan High Atlas. Over more than three years, the film maker patiently
followed the decision making process as well as discussions for and against the project which
will end the isolated life of the traditional community of the Ifri people. Finally, electricity
arrives and changes traditional lifestyle of the next community of indigenous people. Are the
men happy, now?
põlisrahvas, seekord ifrid, hakkab elama uut moodi. On nad nüüd õnnelikud?
