Spartacus to SomeBy: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood MemoriesFor some of you, the thought of KirkDouglas brings to mind the classic movieepic Spartacus. For me, however, it brings tomind the film I did with him in 1953 called “The Juggler.”It starred the legendary Kirk Douglas and was produced by theamazing Stanley Kramer. For reasons unknown, it never really was abox office hit - although it’s been shown numerous times on the late, late (make that late, late, late show - as well as The Turner ClassicMovie) TV.At 10 years old, working with Kirk Douglas and Stanley Kramerdidn’t mean much to me as I was too young to realize who they were. Itwasn’t until I became an adult that I realized just how fortunate I wasto have had that opportunity.I even have a wonderful letter personally written to me by StanleyKramer, thanking me for being a part of his film. Needless to say, thatletter now means more to me than I can ever describe.Looking back, although I had no clue as to how famous they were,I recall how incredibly nice they both were to me. I, of course, treasurethat time of my life.Kirk had an amazing life and certainly was loved by many –including me. Sadly, so many of our legends are now gone.As a side note, many years later as an adult I was fortunate enoughto do three episodes of the “Streets of San Francisco,” with Kirk’s sonMichael. He was extremely warm and friendly. It was great fun to beable to share with Michael that I had worked with his dad so manyyears ago.Until next time, remember “The most wasted day of all, is one inwhich you have not laughed.”*If you enjoy my columns, I hope you’ll watch my “HollywoodMemories” starting in November. Publisher Dan will sit with me as he“interrogates” me about my Hollywood life and to find out “who didwhat to whom.”We did our first rehearsals this month and at the very least, we suredid laugh a lot. I hope you join me. More next month.Beverly Washburn graced the silver screen as a child actress andis the author of Reel Tears.
