derecho. Gov. Kim Reynolds had applied
for the aid.
Farmers operating in contiguous
counties to those declared primary natural
disaster areas, including Dubuque and
Jackson, may also apply for emergency
loans.
Iowa farmers will be available for various
USDA disaster assistance programs,
including “program flexibilities” and a
special signup for the Environmental
Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).
The program changes mean streamlined
requirements for the Emergency Conservation
Program, Emergency Forest
Restoration Program, Emergency Loan
Program, Farm Storage Facility Program,
and Tree Assistance Program.
The program will be available through
nearly half of next year. The deadline to
The derecho cut a devastating path through
millions of acres of Iowa corn, flattening stalks
and doing damage to the ears.
producers who have been impacted by the
derecho and drought.
The IDALS website, iowaagriculture.
gov/derecho, includes resources and updates
regarding the derecho’s impact and
services for farmers.
ISU’s website, crops.extension.iastate.
edu/storm-damage-resources, provides
detailed information and access to experts
on such topics as assessing grain bin
damage, disease and insect management,
grain storage, evaluating crops, nutrients
and fertility, silage options, harvest
considerations, cover crop options, crop
insurance considerations and more.
A key concern farmers are dealing
with this fall is insurance coverage. Iowa
farmers planted 23.4 million acres of corn
and soybeans in 2020, according to Ann
Johanns, extension program specialist, in
her piece on Frequently Asked Questions
regarding crop insurance coverage on the
website. Approximately 90% of those
acres have been insured, she noted.
Alejandro Plastina, extension economist,
offers some practical guidelines for
filing crop insurance losses. Charles Hurburgh,
ISU professor of agriculture and
biosystems engineering, advises farmers
to work closely with their elevator to find
out if different qualities of grain will be
accepted. Ask them what factors they will
look at and if there will be acceptance
limits, he said on the website.
