Valued partners Equal suffrage protects the farm family The Equal Suffrage League in Iowa distributed information that closely connected the importance of woman voting with the health of farming communities. Here are some excerpts from it the organization’s early 20th Century literature from the digital archives of the University of Iowa Library: The farmer knows better than anyone else how his wife helps to earn and carry on the farm. When he dies, he leaves it without fear in her hands. But he leaves its taxes unprotected by a citizen’s vote. His widow is considered a citizen when the taxes fall due. Her taxes are more likely to be raised than reduced. On election day, she suffers from taxation without representation – she has no voice in saying how her taxes shall be spent. When Iowa women vote, they will help to secure better roads, better schools, better trolley service, more libraries and meeting halls, and insist upon wholesome amusements for boys and girls. – Equal Suffrage League We look for the men on the farms, where thinking is clear and clean, and where justice is granted in large measure, to give women their unqualified support at every opportunity, and that opportunity comes in Iowa in June 1916. – Successful Farming Giving women a voice in government is but the legitimate outgrowth of the forward movement that has been gradually unfolding through the centuries. To share with men the responsibilities and duties of citizenship adds to her prestige in home life and opportunity, in social affairs, in education achievement and in philanthropic endeavor. – The Iowa Farmer I am an advocate of woman suffrage. I believe that most farmers are also. There are few professions or callings in which woman is so helpful a partner as farming. Many a farm has been tided over some spell of adversity by the income of the determined, devoted farm wife with her flock of hens and her churn. Yet you and I have disfranchised this army of women all these many, many years – The Homestead When Abraham Lincoln spoke of a government of the people, for the people, and by the people, he put in the fewest possible words, all that we can think of as desirable in government. I do not see how we can have a government of the people, for the people or by the people until our women have an equal voice with men. They share with us to the full in everything except the ballot. They should share with us in that, not alone because it is just and right that they should, but because they are fully as competent as men to use that ballot wisely – Henry C.
