Farmers to Families food boxes are a “winwin,” Heinrich said. “It gets the product to people who really need it, and it’s taking the product off the market for us,” Heinrich said. “We’ve got to get our products moved through. This is a great way to move it.” Still, pesky distribution problems persisted with Farmers to Families. The program was put together very quickly, with contractors having a week to connect with nonprofits and put together their bids. The next week, the USDA was rushing to examine 600-some bids. In the “speed dating” between food banks and contractors, language suggesting it was a “truck-to-trunk program” led some large, efficient contractors to bid a higher price based on the cost of delivering the boxes directly into the hands of families, rather than delivery to a service organization, explained Mike Miller, president and CEO of River Bend Food Bank, which is based in the Quad Cities. Some of those contractors lost out on the bidding process. Food banks ended up with the final transportation and distribution costs. Contractors such as Prairie Farms have Mike Miller, President and CEO, River Bend Food Bank helped food banks manage shortages in cold storage by leaving a truck parked at the food bank. The USDA program isn’t the only effort to feed hungry families. Through the “Pass the Pork” program, Iowa pork producers have been able to donate hogs to local food banks during this time of rock-bottom prices. The “Beef Up Iowa” program used Iowa State students and staff to process beef from 4-H and FFA families, also for food bank delivery. Hunger has always been a problem in America, but with millions laid off and small businesses struggling during the pandemic, more people are hungry.
