Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
I
write to you this from atop a rather large
stack of pins and needles. Why? Because,
by the time you read this, our dinner
theater production of my original show,
Young Dracula, will be in the books. Huge
success? Abysmal failure? I DON’T KNOW!
Because, as I write, on a drizzly, miserable
Sunday afternoon (although one in which the
Eagles are showing a surprising amount of grit
versus the Steelers), the show is still two days
away (Tuesday, so you may still be able to catch
the odor of the smoldering wreckage of my
acting career if you catch the wind right), so I’m
in the kind of terror-filled limbo, straining to
glimpse into the future and failing.
I’m reasonably sure my cast mates will
do very well — they’re all solid professionals
who do their homework and come prepared.
A finer group of actors you will not find. The
same, however, cannot be said of me. To be
fair, though, the show was written in a manner
that even the most seasoned professional
would have problems memorizing it correctly;
a Laurence Olivier, an Alec Baldwin, a Parker
Smith (I know, I wrote the part for him and he
played it 100 times and if he just could have
delayed his vacation for a couple of weeks
it’d be HIM chewing at his nails right now
instead of me, but I digress). So I get to be mad
at myself twice. Once for struggling with my
lines, and again for writing said godforsaken
lines.
But I’m probably over-worrying. I’m sure
everything will be fine and a good time will be
had by all. Besides, I never like being OVERprepared
for these things, and half the fun is
figuring out what I’m going to say next.
We at Exit Zero Filling Station, me and my
Not Ready for Premium Fuel Players and the
West Cape May Christmas Parade organizers
are very grateful to everyone that purchased a
ticket and made this, “Hey! Let’s do a play in the
barn!”Mickey Rooney-esque production such
a success. (As of 4pm Sunday, the 4:30 show
was over 50% capacity and the 7:00 show was
SOLD OUT.)
And just so you know, this wasn’t really
my idea, I said to Jack Wright a few weeks ago,
“Hey Jack Wright, why don’t we do a staged
reading of one of my shows for Halloween?
You know, maybe put on some costumes, set
up a few microphones, read from our scripts.”
Jack, as Jack does, said, “Why don’t we just do
a whole show?” If there’s a bigger Go Big or
Go Home guy than Jack Wright, I haven’t met
him yet.
My big fear is that weather, my failing
memory or unforeseen technical issues make
a hash of the whole thing. My bigger fear is
that all goes perfectly and Jack says, “Let’s do
another one!”
Had a post-rehearsal cocktail
with my leading man Kevin
Ebner (aka Nevada Smith) at 5
West last Thursday. Kevin is doing
me a major solid coming down
from Philly to do the show, and
he bought me a shot of this peanut
butter whiskey that, not gonna
lie, was delicious. Bartendress
Stephanie O’Leary ask for my
phone number AGAIN. Yeesh, so
thirsty… What’s that? It was for
the rewards program? Still counts.
I was on the front steps at EZ
enjoying a smoke on my break
during my TNT gig Friday night
when an unseen passerby in a
red SUV yelled, “Shouldn’t you
be singing? Get back to work!” It
was my first Drive By Heckling. I
thought it might be Michael Kline,
but there were too few F-bombs
and a noticeable lack of ganja
smoke. (That’s a jazz joke.)
Rude Shofflers of the Week:
Kristen and Todd Shoffler. They
hit EZFS for dinner this weekend
and, after I went out of my way to
dedicate a Billy Joel song to them,
they totally ignored me. On the
bright side, at least Todd didn’t
dance.
You know, I wasn’t sure racism
was wrong until I saw it on a
bumper sticker.
Quote of the Week: From
an EZFS patron and TNT aficionado,
“You’re not fat, you’re just
chunky!” Eh, I’ll take it.
Every Thursday morning on
my delivery route I fight against
the glare of the rising sun. “If only I
had some sunglasses!” I thought to
myself. Then remembered I have a
$300 pair of Ray-Ban prescription
sunglasses in the sunglass holder
over my rearview. Derp.
The bundle I tossed onto
the stone pillar at Red Brick Ale
House stood on end, meaning Jim
Linnington must be casting some
weird mojo in my direction. Also,
the boys and I had lunch there the
always hooks me up with a free
doughnut when I get my weekly
decaf and drop off his magazines.
I know, I know, decaf is for losers
but I like it when my heart doesn’t
explode. They were shut down for
quite some time and it’s good to
see them back. (FYI, I give the
doughnut to my wife and watch
her eat it. Slowly.)
I got a couple of great new
Eagles T-shirts I can finally bust
out now that they got a win.
Possibly their only win.
I’ve never looked forward to
hate-watching a movie the way I
can’t wait to hate-watch Cats. I’m
a poor, unknown, aspiring actor so
I probably would have taken a part
in this piece of shit for the monster
paycheck, but what’s everyone
else’s excuse? I mean, Idris Elba?
In CATS?
I got this nifty little shelf
unit for our hallway to hold our
back-up soaps, shampoos and
other bathroom flotsam. It is also
a brand new place for my wife to
lose her glasses. If our house was
one giant empty room with a chair
in the middle of it, her glasses
would be under the cushion of that
chair. It’s really remarkable.
Facebook Post of the Week:
On that otherwise useless website
(unless your thing is shaking
your fist at Trump-shaped clouds)
someone said, “It sounded like a
James Taylor concert at Exit Zero
last night.” This is just about the
nicest thing anyone has ever said
about me. Assuming it was about
me. If it wasn’t, they can go to
Hell. (But seriously, thanks. Hat
tip; John Cooke who is everywhere
all the time.)
Hypothetical question; if I put
together, say, an acoustic tribute
act that played one set of each of,
say, the aforementioned JT, Bruce
and Johnny Cash and let’s say we
put this acoustic act in a restaurant
like, say, Exit Zero Filling Station
other day and RBAH did an absolutely
fantastic job putting their Year’s Eve, is that something you’d
Here’s two sci-fi reviews to consider.
One is a show everybody seems to
be talking about, and the second
everybody seems to have missed.
Utopia is a new series on
Amazon starring Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson
(Dwight from The Office, US edition), and John
Cusack. This show is not for the faint of heart.
While its violence isn’t rapid fire, every time it
pulls the trigger, best believe there’s a bloody
end.
In the story, a pandemic is starting, and
one chemical manufacturer (Cusack) acts
very suspiciously about his possible involvement
in the outbreak. There is a research
scientist (Wilson) who claims to have discovered
the flu in the first place and knows
how to create a vaccine. At the center of it all,
however, is a prophetic comic book. You heard
me. A prophetic comic book. It’s hero is a little
girl named Jessica Hyde, who in reality is all
grown up (and played by Lane).
The draft of the comic book, named Utopia,
is the sequel to a series named Dystopia. A
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
young couple going through some junk in
an inherited house find the draft manuscript
and drawings. There’s a fantasy convention
in town, and they decide to take a hotel room
and entertain bids from people who want the
rare find.
That tactic turns out to be disastrous. Oh,
they get cash — they get a boatload. But this
book, an edition that’s never been seen before,
is worth much more to others. And yes, they
will kill for it. The first season has been engaging,
but very bloody. Our current violent society
doesn’t provide enough blood on its own
— right? But if you don’t mind squirming once
in a while over something that is outright disgusting,
then it’s worth the watch.
The next film was dubbed on an Internet
ad as “the best science-fiction film you haven’t
seen.” Well, that certainly threw the gauntlet
down for me! The film is Midnight Special,
and it’s from 2016. It stars Michael Shannon,
Kirsten Dunst, and Adam Driver. A little boy
has been kidnapped, and the search is on.
When you discover why he was kidnapped,
it’s apparent why he’s being kept in hiding and
only moved at night.
This film is beautifully paced, and the
story wonderfully unfolds. This action thriller
has twists and turns that may shake you but
never lose you. It is one of the better science-fiction
movies I’ve seen in a long time
— and certainly tops the list for the best of
the last five years. It grabs you right from the
beginning and never lets go.
The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
IT FEELS
LIKE FALL
AT TOMMY’S FOLLY
BOUTIQUE
If you see gaggles of confused but curious
Shoebies wandering around our fair
city, worry not! They are not the usual
post-season strays, awaiting tranquilizer
darts and nets, and a return to Philly in
crates. No, these are Special Shoebies (though I
know, I know, ALL Shoebies are special in their
own way, bless their hearts). These are Home
Grown Organic Cage-Free Shoebies!
What is this marvel, you ask? Problem is,
during the season we have an excess of visitors,
and then the blighters vanish! We are forced to
close our businesses, shut down our saltwater
taffy mine and return our legions of beautiful,
sullen Eastern European youths to the cryogenic
storage facility under Congress Hall.
We have over the years tried all kinds of
clever marketing devices: our “Come and See
Cape May in Fall: It’s Cold, But Not Often
Fatally So!” poster campaign was a flop. And
our incentive to pirates, to shanghai affluent
tourists from ferries and cruise ships that
strayed too close to the shore, and gently release
them in Cape May, was not the success that it
should have been: typically, they would fill up
on pancakes and then bolt for freedom, pausing
only for candy every few yards. Obviously,
chasing them down with dogs was fun, but
hardly conducive for good Yelper reviews.
So, one late night at Iron Pier, we hit on
a plan. “Why don’t you?” slurred Bill Gates,
who vacations here with the strange Zuckerbeg
fellow, and some surly lads who seem to be
from Giggle. “Why don’t we make our own
Shoebies?!”
Well, how we laughed! And how we
thrashed Bill with our canes! Afterwards,
though, I thought: “the chap has a point…”
And so, over the past few seasons we have
been surreptitiously taking DNA samples
from the crème de la crème of our visitors: a
smudged wine glass here, a swift stab from my
walking cane there, a nip from Young Albert
… though that latter carries the real risk of the
target catching some awful canine maladies.
The laboratory under the D’Catur Mansion
has been busy and having lots of fun.
And now we have our first batch of genuine,
cloned Shoebies! We made a few genetic
tweaks here and there, of course, to curtail
some of the more annoying traits: they are
less likely to stop abruptly on the sidewalk
every few paces and yell, “Say! How CUTE is
that?!?!”, for example.
We, of course, cloned the originals’ credit
cards, cut new car keys, and photocopied their
dollar bills, which I am sure will not pose any
problems further down the line.
UNFINISHED PROJECTS
SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
BY LEADING, NOT MISLEADING.
3-2 VOTE
Council has five members. In order for an action to move forward, there needs to be a simple
majority vote, or 3-2. The goal from the council is to find common ground and reach an
agreement on what will be the best fit for Cape May. There has been disunity involving
specific council members since they received a seat. The disunity is intentional and the delays
in reaching an agreement are intentional.
There is a long list of accomplishments that have come from a 3-2 vote. For example, the Free
Jitney Service and Performance Parking. These additions to our community benefited not only
residents, but also visitors during our busier months. The performance parking even resulted in
almost $600,000 in additional revenue to the city. These were initially voted down by our
opponent.
2020 BUDGET
Earlier in the year, the city manager presented the council with a budget. Not long after, the
COVID-19 pandemic hit. Council was then left with the decision on how to proceed with the
introduced budget. Based on information from our city auditor and our CFO, we had two
choices - leave the budget as is, or make cuts to the budget with the understanding these
cuts would affect the city in future years. We decided to leave it as is. We decided to trust our
city manager to be mindful of the revenues and expenditures and give a lot of leeway in order
to control spending. We stand by this decision.
BETTER TOGETHER. THE BEST FOR CAPE MAY.
VOTELEARHENDRICKS.COM LEAR & HENDRICKS FOR CAPE MAY
Paid For By The Committee to Re-Elect Lear & Hendricks.
The entire world has been seeing delays in projects, construction, and even basic business
development since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Permanent and temporary closures,
product shortages and lack of employment all play factors in how a community continues to
function. Cape May is no different than any of these communities. We are equally as
frustrated about the delays with specific projects, but in no way does it mean there is a lack
of leadership, as our opponent suggests.
The Soldiers and Sailors Park Project was one of the recent delays, but it was worth the wait.
We now have a custom granite element that came from North Carolina and are ready to
continue with the project. Another example is Lafayette Park. We are dealing with a
contamination issue which can't just be covered with a bandaid. It needs to be remedied
correctly or else we will see new issues in the future.
We also have to consider grant money. If there is a potential to receive hundreds of thousands
of dollars, if not millions of state funding, why would we inhibit the city from the opportunity?
Receiving these grants takes time. In particular, we have received 6 million dollars for the
Franklin Street School Project from the county, the County Library Commission and the City of
Cape May, with the potential to receive an additional 3 million from the state. That is worth
waiting for.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
In the City of Cape May, we pride ourselves on our Citizens Advisory Committees, which
engage more than 100 citizens in helping the city, lending their expertise to topics that are
important to the city, giving their time and ultimately saving the city money on spending for
these types of services. In addition to these, we have strong partnerships with larger entities
such as the county and the state who provide opportunities for funding, grants and recently
have helped minimize the impact of COVID-19. We have said this multiple times, but this job is
a 24/7 job. We are committed to growing our relationships with community members and
government entities to better our city, to create valuable connections, and to bring the best
resources to the place we call home.
CAN’T MISS!
We aren’t the first generation to
require new ways to entertain
ourselves. As we face another
season of limited activity, take a
lesson from the ancestors — get
busy having fun.
In the Victorian era, when leisure became
a mark of status, merchants, teachers and
other “white collar” workers had to find
acceptable ways to amuse themselves. Many
having “risen above their station” — children
of servants who now had their own
servants — were unaccustomed to leisure.
Industrialization led to growth in the class
between laborers and the idle rich. This new
middle class faced a challenge — free time. In
rural areas, it was common to play games like
quoits on the village green, or stage theatricals
in the village hall. In cities, however, members
of the middle class had to learn to entertain
themselves, and they did it by inviting friends
into their parlors. “Parlor games” were an
excuse to get together and spark conversation.
The experts at MAC explore the history
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, challenge yourself with a puzzle!
of Victorian parlor games. Some were board
games, often smaller versions of the outdoor
games their parents had played, like miniature
bowling. Other games incorporated geography,
mathematics or moral lessons. There
were also games like charades, which require
teams to work together, or “Sardines,” which
is hide and seek, but you join the hiders you
find, resulting in crowded closets and giggles.
“Pass the Slipper” required one person to close
their eyes while a small item, usually a slipper,
was hidden behind someone’s back. The idea
was to guess who had it, without falling for
any bluffs. “Forfeits” was like a combination
of “Pass the Slipper” and “Truth or Dare” — if
you didn’t find the item, you had to bark like a
dog, sing a song, or otherwise act silly. Most
of these would work well over Zoom!
Jigsaw puzzles are another throwback
activity. As we’re spending more time in our
houses, jigsaw puzzles are a way to challenge
our brains and help us to relax. Your blood
pressure likely drops as you work, and you
get a hit of dopamine when you find the
right piece. Science says we can enter an
almost dreamlike state while working on puzzles,
allowing our brains to achieve moments
of insight that were blocked by our rational
minds. Puzzles also offer the chance to connect
with others on a deeper level. There’s
room for quiet, so you may find it easier to bite
your tongue, or to broach a difficult subject,
and the puzzle is a visual reminder that not
everything needs a quick solution.
Fall is Fire Table Season at Cape May Wicker!
I
was up on the hawk watch platform
at Cape May Point State Park and was
delighted to see, even in these Covidtempered
times, it is thriving with hawks.
People were social distancing and everyone
was respectful of the next person’s personal
space. The platform can accommodate
100 or so hawk watchers with room to spare.
There were a lot of local-expert observers on
hand helping interns point out passing birds.
At one point, a visitor asked whether I’d
noted any changes since I first raised binoculars
in Cape May in 1976. Two things quickly
sprang to mind. In 1976, long before the platform
was built, I don’t think I saw 100 visitors
in three months and it was hard to find a
Cooper’s Hawk. Now they fill the sky.
The large number of present bird watchers
is no surprise. Bird watching is North
America’s second most popular outdoor
activity, second only to gardening. Cape May
is North America’s most celebrated migratory
junction. Add plenty of free parking and
well-maintained restrooms — you have the
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ingredients for a great outdoor experience
under raptor-filled skies. Some cloud coverage
would have helped as they silhouette
the birds and offer reference points to direct
other eyes to high flying Peregrines, whose
numbers have likewise rebounded. Several
Peregrines an hour is in October.
Hawks aren’t the only birds visible from
the platform. Bunker Ponds swarm with
waterfowls. Northern Pintails put on a fine
show and the pines and cedars at the north
end of the platform are a magnet for migrating
warblers. Bring your binoculars because there
are no loaners available this year. The Cape
May Bird Observatory store is open Friday
through Sunday and their optic’s selection
is unbeatable. Stop by 701 East Lake Drive,
Cape May Point and test drive a Zeiss Terra
8x32, priced for people without Swiss bank
accounts and offers an image so good you’d be
hard pressed to spend more.
Other handy items include a brimmed
hat, sunscreen, and field guide tailored to
the challenges of hawk watching. My favorite
guide is Jerry Liguori’s Hawks at a Distance.
And unlike some birding, you don’t need to
get to the hawk watch at the crack of dawn.
Most migrating raptors wait until thermals
begin to perk before going aloft.
Don’t forget your face mask and do ask
questions. Hawk watchers love to show and
share their enthusiasm with beginners. See
you on the platform at the “Raptor Capital of
North America.”
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Mr. and Mrs. Wuerker
Happy Birthday Chris
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER PRINTS, PLEASE EMAIL PHOTO@EXITZERO.US
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I started a diet plan that is FINALLY working
for me. I’m about 50 pounds overweight
and want to get control of this before it gets
out of hand. The problem is my husband. At
least once a week he brings home fried chicken,
pizza or cheesesteaks — all of which I love —
as a surprise so I don’t have to make dinner. I
think he secretly resents the veggie-dominant
meals I’m now making but ok, let’s agree that
he’s thinking about me. He is not overweight.
I want to live long enough to enjoy our “golden
years” together. What can I do to steer him
away from these surprises? — Diet Conscious
Dear Diet
Honey, you need to buckle down and refuse
to eat it. Or, limit your portions to very small
ones. You can eat anything if it’s limited. Trust
your conscience and stick to your guns. Why
don’t you surprise him with some great takeout
from George’s Place? Pick something up
that you can both agree on. Going forward, you
can try new recipes that will satisfy you both
and limit those surprises to the few and far
between. Good for you in changing the course
of things so you do have a healthy and happy
life. You go, girl!!!
Dear Answer Lady
There is a woman I like and run into quite
often. Sometimes she’s very flirty but others,
not so much. I’d like to ask her out to dinner, but
every time I get around to it, it’s as though she
senses I’m going to make a move and literally
runs away. I hate the hot-cold thing, so I gave
up. Well, she was all over me the next time we
met. I also know she has been dating a former
work colleague off and on. I’d like to ask him
about her, but I won’t. I guess I need someone to
tell me to move on. — On the outside looking in
Dear Outside
Move the heck on. This is dating gamesmanship.
It seems that she has her eyes on
someone else and is using you to amuse herself
between dates or to have as a back-up plan.
Sometimes that elusive behavior is alluring
but it is only a game. You need to find someone
worthy of your attention and not waste it on
a slippery fish. Do yourself a favor and spend
next Saturday night at the Ugly Mug patio with
your mates. A good time with your friends is
just what the doctor ordered.
FRANKLIN is a feisty, 28-pound boy who
came to the shelter as a stray. His big personality
makes up for his size and he’s always
excited to run around the yard. Franklin is nervous
at first but will quickly warm up to new
people. He is learning leash skills and basic
manners but will make a great companion to
someone willing to continue his training.
ICE is a sweet, seven-year-old lady. She came
to the shelter when her owner died and no
one could care for her. She loves catching and
chasing frisbees in the yard and playing fetch.
Ice has excellent leash skills and enjoys long
walks. She is also housetrained and great with
other cats. Ice would be the perfect companion
for an active family.
WILLOW is a young girl who came to the shelter
as a stray but has been a happy pup since
she arrived. Willow loves to play fetch in the
yard and enjoys long walks on her leash. She is
still learning but is quickly grasping behavior
cues like not jumping when she’s excited. Willow
would be best in an active home with older
children who would continue her training.
CREAMSICLE was a stray in a nice community
for years and came to the shelter when
he needed help. He is partially blind and only
eats off white plates because they are easier to
see. Creamsicle is also positive for FIV, but is
happy, healthy and ready for a new home. He
is up to date on all vaccinations and would be
best in a home that can care for his needs.
CINDER AND MAUDE are a bonded, female
pair that came to the shelter when their owner
died. They have always been indoor cats and
never knew anyone but two people and some
other cats. Cinder and Maude need a quiet
home where they will feel safe and can adjust.
They are both up to date on all vaccinations
and would do well in a home with other cats.
SHADOW is a very handsome kitty who came
to the shelter when his owner, who he’s been
with since he was a kitten, became sick and
could no longer care for him. Shadow has
bald ears, declawed front paws and he’s completely
healthy. He is neutered and up to date
on all vaccinations. If interested in adopting
Shadow, contact the shelter.
BEZAIRE
For City Council
Yes, Let’s Set the Record Straight
CLAIM
In her video and her own words, my opponent claims, “Delays
don’t mean lack of leadership or mismanagement...we have
had to deal with COVID-19, the United States had to deal with
COVID-19, for our community it meant Soldiers and Sailors Park
Project and the delay was worth it because we now have that
specially designed and crafted granite from North Carolina.”
TRANSLATION
Vote
Column
4
We know Soldiers and Sailors Park was supposed to be
completed in the Spring of 2019, long before COVID-19, but
we will blame COVID-19 because the residents weren’t given
clear and concise updates on the project and won’t know the
difference. But just in case, we will emphasize the shiny new
granite to distract them.”
In her video and in her own words, my opponent claims, “We
pride ourselves on our citizens’ advisory committees that engage
more than 100 citizens... saving the city money that they
wouldn’t otherwise be able to spend on professional services.”
We are generalizing all of the committees and their importance
so it looks like we have sought the citizens’ help. We will
emphasize the accomplishments of the Jitney service and
Performance Parking Meter program so nobody focuses on the
myriad of things we couldn’t accomplish, case in point the public
safety building.
In her own words during the recorded debate, my opponent
stated, “For the past four years we have invited you into the
working of city government so you know what you see is what
you get.”
They stress that the public has been invited into the workings of
government, but there has been no transparency. They have not
even been open and transparent with the other members of the
council, who have been marginalized.
In her video and her own words, my opponent claims, “And
then there’s Lafayette Street Park. We have to deal with the
contamination issue. Without remediation we are not serving the
public.”
Any time someone brings up the delays at Lafayette Street Park
we can just answer soil contamination and remediation because,
even though we have known about it since project inception, it’s
an intricate and extensive topic that we can use as a cop-out.
Leadership « Fiscal Responsibility « Project Completion
Historic Preservation « Economic Recovery
