Here’s two sci-fi reviews to consider.
One is a show everybody seems to
be talking about, and the second
everybody seems to have missed.
Utopia is a new series on
Amazon starring Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson
(Dwight from The Office, US edition), and John
Cusack. This show is not for the faint of heart.
While its violence isn’t rapid fire, every time it
pulls the trigger, best believe there’s a bloody
end.
In the story, a pandemic is starting, and
one chemical manufacturer (Cusack) acts
very suspiciously about his possible involvement
in the outbreak. There is a research
scientist (Wilson) who claims to have discovered
the flu in the first place and knows
how to create a vaccine. At the center of it all,
however, is a prophetic comic book. You heard
me. A prophetic comic book. It’s hero is a little
girl named Jessica Hyde, who in reality is all
grown up (and played by Lane).
The draft of the comic book, named Utopia,
is the sequel to a series named Dystopia. A
young couple going through some junk in
an inherited house find the draft manuscript
and drawings. There’s a fantasy convention
in town, and they decide to take a hotel room
and entertain bids from people who want the
rare find.
That tactic turns out to be disastrous. Oh,
they get cash — they get a boatload. But this
book, an edition that’s never been seen before,
is worth much more to others. And yes, they
will kill for it. The first season has been engaging,
but very bloody. Our current violent society
doesn’t provide enough blood on its own
— right? But if you don’t mind squirming once
in a while over something that is outright disgusting,
then it’s worth the watch.
The next film was dubbed on an Internet
ad as “the best science-fiction film you haven’t
seen.” Well, that certainly threw the gauntlet
down for me! The film is Midnight Special,
and it’s from 2016. It stars Michael Shannon,
Kirsten Dunst, and Adam Driver. A little boy
has been kidnapped, and the search is on.
When you discover why he was kidnapped,
it’s apparent why he’s being kept in hiding and
only moved at night.
This film is beautifully paced, and the
story wonderfully unfolds. This action thriller
has twists and turns that may shake you but
never lose you. It is one of the better science-fiction
movies I’ve seen in a long time
— and certainly tops the list for the best of
the last five years. It grabs you right from the
beginning and never lets go.
