THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY

IRISH HAIR AND

BEAUTY WORTH

€2.6 BILLION

THE FIRST EVER Economic Value Report

on the Irish hair and beauty sector has

revealed that turnover for the sector was an

estimated €2.6bn in 2019.

The Hair and Beauty Industry

Confederation (HABIC) commissioned

economist and consultant Jim Power to

deliver the detailed economic analysis of

the industry, which also found that the total

employment in the sector was equivalent

to 2.1 per cent of the total Irish workforce.

A total of 9,286 hair and beauty salons were

counted in Ireland, of which 88.9 per cent of

staff were female.

In less positive findings, the Irish

hairdressing industry’s black market was

found to be worth as much as €400 million,

with a cost to the exchequer of €55 million. In

addition, the report stated that Covid-19 had

represented a “massive shock” to the sector,

and during the first 15-week shutdown €580

million in turnover was lost.

The impact of the second governmentimposed

lockdown has not been assessed yet,

but the latest nationwide shutdown means

salons face numerous challenges once again.

With salons on track to re-open at the

beginning of December, hopefully a

Christmas rush will provide a period of

normality for an industry that has undergone

immense hardship this year.
