Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

Happy Thanksgiving, turkeys. 

Although I feel like every Thursday, 

when Undertow comes out should 

be a national holiday, I will acquiesce 

to society’s rules just this 

once. Thanksgiving was always my favorite 

holiday. Everything was always my favorite 

everything until 2020. 

In case you haven’t been paying close 

attention to the back cover of Exit Zero the 

last few weeks, Black Friday kicks off our Exit 

Zero Festive (I know…) Station, which will 

run through the holidays. Food trailers, drink 

trailers, merch trailers, trailer trailers, a variety 

of trailers will be on hand to sell you stuff 

and things, roaming bands of wild Christmas 

carolers will be on hand to terrify you, as well 

as other Christmas-y things. (I’m going to be 

honest, I haven’t done a ton of research on 

this, but if you know Exit Zero you know it’s 

going to be cool and fun.) 

Next Saturday, December 5, I’m looking 

forward to TNT, my acoustic musical venture 

with Tim Joyce, joining forces with Nancy 

Malcun and Camille Peruto, two of the best 

singers you’ll ever hear and I don’t say that 

lightly, for a night of music culminating in a 

set of Christmas tunes as we light the Exit 

Zero tree using whatever is left in our gas 

pumps. It is expected to be bright and brief. 

So be punctual. The music kicks off at 4pm. 

And here’s a reminder that on New Year’s 

Eve (if our government allows us to pursue a 

living which is a sentence I never thought I’d 

have to write in 21st century America) Tim 

and I will be performing an acoustic tribute 

night featuring the music of Neil Diamond, 

The Eagles and Bruce Springsteen, assuming 

Tim learns the new songs, which is something 

he hasn’t done since “Play That Funky 

Music White Boy.” (It’s okay, I can break his 

balls in here, he never reads it.) 

Guess who just found out he has a halfbrother? 

I basically do two things these days since 

I was fired from Exit Zero Filling Station 

— watch The Office and Hallmark Channel. 

When I wrote Sherlock Holmes plays for my 

former place of employment I found myself 

thinking more deductively. When I was playing 

20+ Beatles shows a year I found myself 

thinking more in harmony. With The Office I 

find myself thinking more “That’s what she 

said.” You can apply it to a surprising number 

of seemingly innocuous statements. 

(Side note: does anyone else miss Beatles 

night? At this point in my life I can take or 

leave Beatles music. I mean, how many times 

can you sing “Eight Days a Week” and keep 

the magic alive? For me it was more about the 

gathering of old friends, the making of new

ones and showing the world I 

could still hit the high notes on all 

those Wings songs. Maybe one of 

these days…) 

I generally love the Hallmark 

Channel, but the constant banner 

ads and countdown to the 

premiere of their next Christmas 

masterpiece are super-distracting. 

I imagine it’s how a squirrel 

goes through its day. What was 

that? Did I miss something? Shit! 

What did that say? That aside, 

it’s at least nice to know there’s 

a landing spot for faded B-List 

TV stars, aging former hunks and 

one-time Supermans. 

I’m working on my own 

Hallmark-like script, “Christmas 

in Cape May: A Love Story: 

Yuletide Reunion: Nana’s Bakery: 

Snow on the Beach: Lighthouse 

of Love: Chapter Three: The 

Beginning: Chapter One.” It’s like 

a normal Hallmark movie but 

with more swearing, blood and 

graphic sex scenes. Tom Wopat 

and Nancy McKeon are attached. 

I’m not gonna lie, for a long 

time I thought Tide Pods were 

stupid. Now I can’t imagine my 

life without them. 

I do a fair amount of work 

(writing, updating distribution 

lists, playing solitaire) in the 

publishing office at Exit Zero 

Filling Station. My best friend 

Tish Roussos is kind enough to 

let me use her desk. She’s got 

a little pillow on her chair that 

cushions my sensitive bum. I just 

have the heart to tell her how 

much I fart on it. 

Beard & Weight Watch: I’m 

sitting at 229.5 this fine Sunday 

morning, which I consider a gift 

given I haven’t been to the gym in 

three weeks (sick for two weeks 

plus a week of my wife begging 

me not to go because she’s afraid 

I’ll get Covid but I’m starting to 

think that maybe she just wants 

to keep me fat because all the 

girls are checking out my heinie) 

and I haven’t been super-great 

about my diet (still eating about 

85% healthy but allowing the 

occasional slice of pizza or bowl 

of pasta to sneak in because I am 

but human). Anyway, I’m going 

back next week and still think I 

can get to my goal weight of 199.5 

by New Year’s Day. 2027. The 

beard also had a bad week since 

I had to shave it off in preparation 

for an acting job I booked. 

No, it’s not something you’ll 

ever see (unless you’re a pharmacist-in-training), 

but… and I 

hope you’re sitting down… there 

has been talk of the return of 

Larry Crinkle. (The uninitiated 

should search Youtube: Davis 

Hyundai Burlington NJ.) 

Why is it that when we order 

out pizza I can only eat 2-3 slices 

but when I cook a DiGiorno I can 

easily eat the whole thing? 

I’m not on Facebook much 

these days, just long enough to 

post about my gigs or chuck in 

a joke-y reply on a friend’s post, 

but what’s up with this new algorithm? 

I mean, I like both Ginny 

Murray and John Cooke, but I 

don’t care if Ginny comments on 

John’s sunset photo. As, I’m sure, 

they could care less if I comment 

on John’s comment on Ginny’s 

sunset photo. Also? Why so 

many sunset photos? There’s one 

every day and I know where to 

find it if I want to see it. 

Two of my kids want the new 

Sony Playstation 5 for Christmas. 

They sell for $800-1000 on the 

internet, which is significantly 

more than I paid for my first car. 

Though, in their defense, a PS5 

probably has more resale value 

than a 78 Chevette. 

I could not think of a more 

apt metaphor for the past 

eight months than watching a 

bad Eagles team play a mediocre 

Brown team in the Ohio 

rain and mud. Who won? Who 

cares? We’re all just ants sitting 

on a blue-green marble hurtling 

pointlessly through space for the 

equivalent of a blink of an eye 

until the sweet cold blackness of 

oblivion claims us for all eternity. 

But I’m pulling for the Eagles.

few months ago on Netflix. It is an eye-opening 

exploration of social media although 

many of us have been on these platforms for 

some time. 

The irst thing you’ll learn from this movie 

is that social media is much more insidious 

than we may have thought — that’s the way it’s 

set up. This ilm is loaded with information 

and experts from the main platforms. You may 

think that your personal info is being sold, but 

it is you who is being sold. You’re clicking on 

things, liking things, but then you will start to 

be only fed things that you like — no critical 

thinking necessary.

yourself, “Hey, it’s like they’re in my mind!” 

Well, they are. They’re not trying to change 

your behavior completely — just your buying 

habits. So instead of normally buying something 

out of need, you’re buying because of 

your wants. 

The ilm also follows one family’s journey 

regarding social media. There’s good reason 

for concern because if you’re just getting your 

“facts” from social media, you’re being misled. 

This family’s journey, and speciically the two 

teenagers who are depicted, makes the ilm 

much more relatable and personal. 

It’s important to be aware of the effect 

social media is having on your family, especially 

the younger people who can’t seem to 

separate themselves from it. This should be 

studied and monitored more because it is 

not like TV or radio. This is something that 

follows you and stays with you all day and 

night. It’s not healthy to have that constant 

source feeding into your fears and wants all 

the time — and it is addictive. Hospital and 

suicide rates are up, and it is often a challenge 

to engage younger people sometimes. As the 

ilm says, the term “user” is only used for drug 

users and social media users. 

So, after Thanksgiving dinner, gather the 

family together to watch The Social Dilemma. 

Learn a little more about how social media 

is not all it appears to be. Then, shut off the 

TV, put the phones and tablets away and shut 

down the computers. Talk to each other, listen 

and be thankful… for family.

The Old Fogey 

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur 

Iam not sure about The Mistletoe. On the 

one hand, it encourages spontaneous 

smooching, which I am all for. But on 

the other hand, it makes one the object 

of spontaneous kissing, which I am not 

all for, unless I can vet the would-be kissers. 

Of course, back in MY day, kissing was 

something that took place only after one had 

known a young lady or gentleman for at least 

15 years, and was pre-arranged for a public 

place at exactly noon, with a dozen chaperones 

in each camp, and a sworn-in witness 

from either the judiciary or constabulary on 

hand to ensure no boundaries were crossed. 

And that kiss had to be no longer than one and 

a half seconds, with one’s tongue protruding 

from the SIDE of one’s mouth at all times so 

that witnesses could be sure that nothing 

“French” or otherwise untoward was going 

on. And a gentleman had to be very careful 

that his kisses were not so potent so as to 

make a lady swoon from excitement, nor so 

powerful that she had the air sucked from her 

lungs and subsequently passed out. 

All of that changed, of course, in the time 

of Free Love, and in our city’s Cape Gay era. 

Back in those days, one was lucky to receive 

a kiss as a hasty fare-thee-well token as one’s 

paramour du jour left in the morning, both 

parties unsure of the other’s identity or even 

gender, for that matter. 

Of course I was an expert kisser, being 

possessed of naturally strong lips and having 

spent a college gap year as the only male 

under the age of 50 (I was 17) at an all-girl’s 

horseback-riding school in the Swiss Alps. 

I swear, by evening I was oft so exhausted 

from locking lips that it was all I could do to 

lie down on the grass and, as I slept, various 

young ladies would kiss my upturned mouth, 

which still had enough instinctive kissing 

ability that the sound of their hearts thumping 

would sometimes wake me. 

Still, I was not unhappy to have the art 

of kissing more regulated, so that I was able 

to enjoy a simple walk through our fair city 

without being pounced upon (I had no time 

for this nonsense unless it was by the Late 

Mrs D’Catur, who had such passion for me 

that if I was gone for more than an hour, she 

would upon my return spring on me like a 

tiger). 

And so I am vaguely in favor of mistletoe, 

in that if I can see it in the room, and ensure 

there are none of those sorts of ninnies present 

who tape a sprig to their hat and prowl 

around looking foolish and puckered, then I 

can pick my moment to enjoy a peck on the 

lips. I am off to apply lip balm and prepare 

myself for your attentions…

Singing is one of the things that this 

pandemic has taken from us. Group 

singing can spread the coronavirus 

so, we’re missing out on church choirs 

and school concerts. Christmas Carol 

Karaoke at Rotary Park has been cancelled. 

However, within your pod, singing is a great 

way to keep holiday spirits up. Pack your 

crowd into the car for a moving singalong 

through the decorated streets of Cape May. 

Singalongs are an essential part of the 

human experience. Since the dawn of time, 

making music together has been a way for 

humans to bond. It probably began with 

chants, stomps and claps, before developing 

into recognizable songs. Group singing 

reinforces connections within a group and 

may have once helped to ward off predators 

— it made the group sound larger and more 

powerful. Group music is common among 

animals for similar reasons — wolves howl 

to mark their territory and some species of 

apes “sing” in family groups. Songbirds have 

mastered group singing, but you don’t have 

to meet that standard. You’re looking for the 

mood boost of My Favorite Things. Singing 

really can make you feel better. 

You have time to practice — homeowners 

can join the Light Up Cape May Decorating 

Contest through December 7. Give everyone 

lyric sheets in advance to learn the words, 

otherwise your Twelve Days o Christmas will 

be a little heavy on the “ive golden rings.” 

Warm up with On the Way to Cape May. This 

song, written by Maurice “Buddy” Nugent, 

and popularized by Al Alberts, is a bouncy and 

cheerful lead into holiday tunes. Hanukkah is 

December 10 through 18 this year so, include 

The Dreidel Song and Light One Candle in your 

repertoire — “don’t let the light go out” is a 

particularly poignant message for 2020.

Despite the late date, I went to the 

hawk watch on a day with NNW 

winds. Under ice-blue skies, 20-30 

die-hard hawk watchers were 

treated to lots of Red-shouldered 

and Red-tailed Hawks, a bunch of Northern 

Harriers and all the usual late migrants — 

bluebirds, cedar waxwings and American 

Robins. One thing we did not have was Pine 

Siskins. This wave of winter finch seems to 

have moved on. Where I had 40 at my feeders 

last week, yesterday there were three. 

The American Goldfinch was the dominant 

finch, but word is that Common Redpolls are 

not far behind. These red-capped Subarctic 

breeders and winter nomads sometimes 

arrive in hordes in January and February, 

once they’ve consumed all the birch catkins 

in New England. One cold February morning, 

I watched waves of redpoll come in off the 

Atlantic and festoon the withered goldenrod 

like animate Christmas Tree ornaments and 

enliven the air with their brittle call notes. 

The point of this essay is to point out 

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

that Fall migration doesn’t end on November 

30. The hawk counter’s contract may end, 

but it doesn’t mean the hawks won’t migrate 

when winds turn cold and northerly. A big 

dump of snow in New England will send 

big burly buteos south, seeking open ground 

where rodents are not sheathed in a layer of 

snow. I’ve seen Rough-legged Hawks arrive in 

March, driven south by a blanketing blizzard. 

While most puddle ducks have already 

arrived, sea ducks and other sea birds will 

continue south into January. A dozen Black 

Scoters flew over the hawk watch while I 

was there. Loons, Northern Gannet and the 

odd alcid or two might be seen from the 

Avalon Seawatch. Or grab your binoculars 

and scan offshore. The skeins of birds writhe 

like strands of smoke along the horizon. Surf 

and Black Scoters are most common. Whitewinged 

Scoters flash white wing patches and 

eiders are overall larger. You may even see the 

odd puddle duck migrating with scoters. 

Winter is the season for special treasures. 

A walk down to Stone Harbor Point may garner 

a treasured look at Snowy Owl. It will certainly 

produce Herring Gulls whose keening 

cries make the air seem 10 degrees colder. The 

belly-laugh grunts of the Great Black-backed 

Gull cast aspersions upon the human preoccupation 

with meaning. 

The meaning you seek is written in the 

tracks laid by tiny sandpipers, erased by the 

incoming tide. Enjoy your walk along unpeopled 

beaches, a special gift of the season.

it as a guide to curb your addiction.

My husband died about a year ago. I was 

devastated and his brother has been a comfort 

to me and also suffered a loss a few years back. 

The problem is that I’m developing feelings for 

him and think he is too. I wonder if I should 

bring the subject up or distance myself from

what people will think of me dating so soon and

That’s a lot of guilt you’re carrying for no

about what happened and take it all in. There 

is nothing wrong with developing a feeling 

for your brother-in-law but beware of your

everything will fall into place.
