Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: The Mad Batter on Jackson Street in the Carroll Villa 

Hotel — a favorite of locals and visitors all year long. 

The server: Casey has been at the Mad Batter since September 

and is thrilled to be a part of the family. She grew up in Cape May 

and previously worked at the Ugly Mug, but Casey spent the last few 

years traveling with her husband who is in the Coast Guard. She told 

us about their stints in North Carolina, Washington State and Boston, 

but she and her husband are excited to be back home. 

The to-go business: Nothing has stopped the Mad Batter’s 

momentum — their to-go business is booming and they haven’t seen 

a lull since reopening after a brief hiatus in early February. Casey told 

us they weren’t sure what to expect but the entire team is grateful to 

see people dining with them again. The Mad Batter still offers to-go 

cocktails that can be enjoyed outside while waiting for a table or your 

takeout order — it was a Wednesday afternoon, so we had to pass on 

the drinks this time. Their system is very organized, so it made for an 

easy pickup from start to finish. 

The food: No one is ever on the same page with lunch these days 

so it’s a miracle we are writing this at all. Luckily, Jack and Nicole 

didn’t bring anything from home — Kayla had shepherd’s pie leftovers 

from the night before and opted out this time. Jack enjoyed the blackened 

fish sandwich while Nicole had her favorite, the Waldorf chicken 

salad sandwich. Jack added some angry wings to the order at the last 

minute that we all shared, including Kayla. It was exactly what we all 

needed. 

The takeaway: The Mad Batter serves up delicious breakfast, 

lunch and dinner every day beginning at 8. They are not taking reservations 

but offer takeout every day. Grab your family or friends and 

head over early to enjoy a delicious mimosa or spicy bloody mary with 

your breakfast. If you want a later start to your day, their entree selections 

are available after 3.


FEED OUR FRIENDS 

Exit Zero Filling Station GM Cathrine delivered dinner to Braden Brojakowski and his parents Amanda and Tom last weekend for the Feed Our Friends program. 

Braden was diagnosed with bone cancer in August and was nominated by a family member to receive a meal while he is home from treatment. The family received 

a feast of Thai shrimp and coconut soup, chopper salad, hot dog, mega tots, Americana burger, Holy guacamole burger and chocolate shakes.

Ah, March, you are truly the worst 

month. You lull us in with your 

70-degree weekends, then raw dog us 

with your 30-degree Mondays. There 

may be months as bad as you, but 

there are none worse. You are a dreadful month 

salvaged only by the inclusion of mine and Tish 

Roussos’ birthdays. (Can’t you see I’m trying 

here, baby?). April is moderately better and 

only because of baseball. I’m not too fond of 

May either. And June? June is for suckers. July 

is okay, though. 

I always joke in the weeks surrounding my 

birthday that you can leave cash and gifts at Exit 

Zero for me to pick up, but only one person ever 

actually does it, and that is Kathy Hughes, perhaps 

the sweetest lady that’s ever been. 

Demon Spawn of the Week: For a month 

I’ve been listening to “Galway Girl” by Ed 

Sheeran on a constant loop in preparation for 

performing it with TNT on St. Patrick’s Day. 

However, it is impossible to sing unless you’re 

actually Ed Sheeran (who is massively talented, 

but seems to have written this song solely to 

bedevil me). I spat out a reasonable approximation, 

but I wouldn’t say I “sang” it. I told EZFS 

bartender Lawrence Green that I got through it 

in the shower a few times, and he said, “Maybe 

that’s the key, maybe you have to sing it naked.” 

I think he’s right, which gives me 51 weeks to get 

in shape for the next St. Patrick’s Day. You’ve 

been warned. 

Tough Crowd of the Week: Bill and Karen 

Wenzel of Cape May Wicker fame. Tim Joyce 

and I had just finished playing “Whole of the 

Moon” by the Waterboys, a brilliant, obscure 

song by a brilliant, obscure band, when Bill 

asks, “Do you know this other Waterboys 

song?” I mean… how many bands IN THE 

WORLD were playing ONE Waterboys song on 

St. Patrick’s Day and Bill wants two!?! Yeesh… 

(Bill and Karen are actually pretty awesome, 

this just struck me as funny. Also, If you haven’t 

heard “Whole of the Moon,” you need to remedy 

that immediately. Rumor has it the tune 

was inspired by Prince, but DO NOT listen to 

Prince’s cover; it’s awful.) 

Celebrity Couple of the Week: Eddie and 

Mary Ann Castegnetta popped in for dinner 

on Friday. She is the author of several children’s 

books. He is the voice of the Golden Oldies 

show on 101.5 WCFA-LP, Saturdays 11-2. Tim 

(Joyce, the T half of TNT) and Mary Ann got into 

a fierce debate about which Brooklyn pizza was 

the best, while Eddie and I discussed possibly 

becoming colleagues (my radio show, by far the 

world’s least important yet longest-gestating 

radio show, may finally be taking shape). 

Dennis and Meghan Mccarthy, I promise 

you a new Squeeze song next week, but at least I 

got “Black Coffee in Bed” right for the first time 



in two years. 

Weekly Beard & Weight 

Watch: My beard is at that density 

where it perfectly highlights my 

double-chin, a double-chin that’s a 

little fuller this week as my weight 

jumped up 1.5 lbs to 237. Not sure 

why, probably that slice of bread 

I had on Wednesday. I’m actually 

not all that bitter; it’s a bummer 

putting on weight but I’m still 15 

lbs ahead of this time last year. I 

will get under 200 by New Year’s 

Eve or die trying… 

It was just a matter of time 

before Kaitlyn Smith showed up 

to EZFS to exact her revenge on 

me for roasting her in the column 

a few weeks back. And she brought 

backup in the form of Kerri Flood. 

It was at this time I began to fear 

for my life. I texted Kerri’s other 

half, George Rohman, to come bail 

me out, but he was off inspecting 

a Water Park somewhere and 

enjoying the quiet that Kerri’s 

absence brings. (Why? Why do I 

antagonize my friends like this?) 

Anyway, it was lovely seeing you 

ladies. Don’t be strangers. Hmm… 

strangers. Now THAT would be a 

great name for a Billy Joel band... 

Rock Star Moment of the 

Week: About once a year, TNT 

get a request for “She Talks to 

Angels” by the Black Crowes, and 

about once a year TNT piss and 

moan about it for a minute then 

play it. I don’t sing it all that well 

but feel like I do a passable job. 

Well, this time a lady comes up 

after and says, “I just want you 

guys to know, my brother-in-law 

is Seth Gorman, he’s the drummer 

for the Black Crowes, I called 

him while you were playing and he 

said it’s never sounded better!” A 

good journalist would have gotten 

this woman’s name, but I am not 

a good journalist. Regardless, and 

while I’m sure Seth was just being 

nice, it was quite the compliment. 

I’m about two weeks 

Facebook-free and doing quite 

well. I don’t fear a relapse because 

I’m really good at quitting things 

that are bad for me. Just look at 

my drinking and smoking habits. 

Bad example… (I did start a new 

page for musical endeavors, which 

makes me feel icky, but if you get 

an invite, it’s legit.) 

Day Off of the Week: Last 

Monday started innocently 

enough, with laundry and coffee. 

I generally spend my days off trying 

futilely to catch up on laundry 

and this was my plan for the day. 

Around 1pm I receive a text from 

Cathrine, my wife and the GM at 

EZFS. “Can you please bring six 

12-packs of Coke to the restaurant 

before three?” Harumph. Okay, 

and while I’m at Acme I’ll do a little 

shopping for the house. But I get 

there and it’s really busy and time 

is burning so you know what? I’ll 

drop these Cokes off at the restaurant 

then pop back and shop for 

me. But when I get in the car my 

phone pings. “We also need quarter 

pound of provolone. And take 

the grill out of the back we need the 

truck.” Okay. So. Back into the busy 

Acme for the cheese, then home 

to drop off the grill (my birthday 

present). I text my kids, “Home 

in 10. Be outside to get grill.” Pull 

up, nobody’s outside, so fine, I’ll 

get the goddamn grill. I drag it to 

the porch, go inside to take a leak 

and Owen jumps up, puts on his 

coat, “You ready to get the grill?” 

Harumph. It’s almost three so I 

hustle to the restaurant. Anyone 

gonna help me with these Cokes? 

No? That’s fine, I’ll take them in. 

And the cheese. Don’t forget the 

cheese. Now thoroughly annoyed, 

I dip into the EZ restroom (it’s 

the coffee, man) and on my way 

out, ace server Casey Bonner says, 

“Terry! Where you been? The 

phones are ringing off the hook!” 

(When I work my job is to answer 

phones, put in take out orders, 

take reservations. Except I wasn’t 

working today. Right?) WRONG! 

Long story short (too late, I know), 

we were down a server and I had 

to cover and my laundry still isn’t 

done and there’s nothing in the 

fridge but this is fine. Everything’s 

fine. 2021 is awesome.

The Oscars take place on April 25 this 

year — two months after they normally 

do. The Academy hoped the 

pandemic would settle down somewhat.

When you look at the nominations for 

Best Picture, we see a lot of familiar names. 

No, I don’t mean Anthony Hopkins or Frances 

McDormand. I mean names that are synonymous 

with Hollywood — all those studios. Did

Netflix leads the way with the most nominations 

— again, you heard that might happen 

here first! The streaming service had 35 nominations 

across the board, up 11 from last year. 

If you’re not a subscriber, or not borrowing 

somebody else’s credentials to login, you’re 

missing out. And if you are borrowing those 

sign-in creds, watch out. Netflix is starting to 

hand out warnings when they feel subscriptions 

are — shall we say — overextended. 

Mank leads the way among best picture 

nominees with the most nominations overall.

And don’t say you didn’t hear it in this column 

first. It’s a Netflix film about the screenwriter 

responsible for Citizen Kane. There were 

several movies missing from the list of Best 

Picture. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is one, however 

it is represented well by way of nominations 

for Best Actor, Chadwick Boseman, and 

Best Actress, Viola Davis. 

Boseman is particularly noteworthy as 

he has performed over his career in so many 

outstanding films. His portrayals bring to life 

many historical characters and give us a true 

flavor for their life and times. Now that we’ve 

lost him, hopefully Oscar will honor him. 

There were other nominations that didn’t 

surprise you if you read this column. Glenn 

Close is nominated for Best Supporting 

Actress for her work in Hillbilly Elegy. Soul has 

been nominated for Best Animated Film. I 

have not seen the other Disney Pixar entry in 

this category — Onward. I’ve heard amazing 

critiques from people I know, so it’s on my list. 

Amazon Studios, HBO Max and others 

join the Hollywood bigwig studios represented, 

which is why I’m confused. Many 

years, Oscar seems to select 10 nominations in 

the Best Picture category. Why not this year? 

There were so many! Okay, not all were in 

theaters. But haven’t we learned that doesn’t 

make them any less suitable for nomination?

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Any day now the turning moment of 

the season will arrive. On frenzied 

wings, mouth agape, iconic “Ha, ha, 

ha…” call ringing in the season. Of 

course, I’m speaking of the imminent 

arrival of Cape May’s first Laughing Gull. 

Unlike many North American bird species, 

this one is increasing and about the 

only things Laughing Gulls cannot digest are 

arsenic and fishhooks. Hot dog dropped on 

the boardwalk? Belongs to the first gull on the 

scene. You got beef with that? Be a better custodian 

of your vittles. The gulls are just being 

gulls. Leave your bagged lunch on the beach? 

It belongs to the gulls and it’s a small price to 

pay for the presence of these iconic coastal 

breeders. The summer air would be empty 

without their cries and your crayon-bearing 

preschooler would have nothing to fill up the 

airspace between ocean and sky. 

The planet’s largest Laughing Gull colony 

is found in the marshes adjacent to Stone 

Harbor. Planting their eggs on floating wrack, 

the speckled vessels can ride out most high 

tides, but a Spring or storm tide wreaks havoc 

on nesting adults whose anguished cries 

make the air ring. I once spent a Spring trying 

to sleep at the Wetlands Institute. Another 

resident was a young woman studying gulls. 

Her premise was that the cries of some birds 

in the colony were given less credence than 

others. In other words, some gulls cry wolf. 

I don’t know whether Harriet ever proved 

her hypothesis, but I know she lost about a 

pint of blood per day trying. The emerging 

greenheads were merciless, and Laughing 

Gulls gorge themselves on them. Earlier in 

the season, they consume Horseshoe crab 

eggs and then whatever the Universe is serving. 

Mole crabs, decanted mollusks or your 

unguarded fries. 

The Laughing Gull’s iconic black heads 

are shed by August, leaving some people to 

believe the birds have gone. They are just getting 

out of their courting attire and juveniles 

never have black heads. In late summer, many 

Laughing Gulls concentrate out over the rips, 

but for now the birds are found following the 

ferry for any edible bits the propellers churn 

aloft. If you want to claim this year’s LAGU 

Award — given to the first person to spot a 

Laughing Gull in Cape May — try the ferry 

terminal. It will be the only black-headed 

gull, unless there is a Black-headed Gull, 

a Eurasian vagrant, in the mix. But blackheaded 

Gulls don’t laugh. Bonaparte’s Gulls? 

You’ll see them, but they don’t commonly don 

Black heads until May.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, prep your pranks for April Fools! 

April gets the press, but March is a 

truly tricky month. One day dawns 

warm and dry, raising hopes of 

spring, and the next is raw and rainy. 

It’s like coming home to the smell of 

baking only to learn the cake is for a bake sale. 

Things are getting better, but everything is still 

sort of “maybe.” One way to keep your spirits 

up — meet trickery with trickery. 

Plotting a Cape May April Fool’s prank 

will boost your mood. Start by surprising 

yourself with all the wrong things you “know.” 

Twinkies don’t last forever — their shelf life is 

45 days. The unnamed forbidden fruit in the 

Garden of Eden was more likely a fig, etrog or 

apricot. Marco Polo didn’t introduce pasta to 

Italy. Most American cowboys wore derbies. 

Then, turn to famous pranksters in history 

for inspiration. Proud of your garden? 

Follow the example of W.L. Thorndyke, a 

Colorado newspaper editor who promoted an 

1895 street fair with photos of an 86-pound 

potato of the “Molly Murphy” variety. Readers 

believed that high-altitude farming could produce 

such a wonder and wrote in for seeds and 

cuttings. Thorndyke used a wooden sphere, 

but you can do something with photo editing 

software. Post your “giant” tulips or tomatoes 

on social media to entertain your friends. 

Planning to take the kids on a beach walk? 

Consider planting some hidden treasure for 

them to find or make a marshmallow trail 

that suggests the Easter Bunny has been plotting 

his route. If you’re really ambitious, consider 

copying Tony Signorini and Al Williams, 

two pranksters who convinced the people of 

Clearwater, Florida that there was a sea monster 

in town in 1948. They created reptilian 

feet out of concrete and “walked” them along 

the beach, using measurements of reptiles to 

create realistic stride length for an eight-foot 

monster. Draw footprints in the sand with a 

stick for a simpler prank. A “cryptozoologist” 

of the day declared that a colony of giant penguins 

had floated into the area on a drifting 

iceberg. It was a poorly kept secret — their 

grandchildren played with the heavy feet in 

the garage — but the pranksters weren’t officially 

unmasked until 1988. Penguins also 

starred in a BBC prank in which “scientists” 

revealed the existence of flying penguins. Find 

this and the even more entertaining “making 

of” videos online and impress a jaded teen. 

Be gentle — no one wants fake reports of 

a resurgence of coronavirus. Some countries 

are threatening jail time again this year for 

coronavirus pranks, and frankly, few of your 

neighbors are likely to come to your defense.
